Yes I agree. The law of sod seems to apply to backup generators so often. The Register has plenty of tales covering all kinds of failures from birds nesting in air intakes to fuel being stolen via builders doing all kinds of daftness. I used to work for a uni. and even with all kinds of multiple systems the UPS usually worked, the generators less so. SMA who make serious solar PV kit have a product called Sunny Island that will integrate renewables and generators but it just looks too expensive for normal use in a school. Just buy a bigger UPS.

That's what we did. New Hikvision IP DVR with a Hikvision analogue to IP converter. We can gradually upgrade to IP when the old cameras fail or add extra IP cams easily. The quality of new higher resolution analogue cams isn't bad either when we've replaced them.

Had a collection yesterday' of a load of scrap kit by ORM Green. The last of our Fujitsu Esprimos have gone. They were 10 years old but even though only SATA 1 were just about usable with SSDs.

When the kit is older than the children it's probably time it was scrapped.

We use sophos safeguard with fde. I hate it. Complex, hard to manage and at times just doesn't work. We're now using veracrypt which is perfect for staff laptops but doesn't support synced windows logins like sophos should. We're using sophos cloud endpoint/intercepted which is a much better product. We may try the sophos cloud encryption when we move to win 10 (it can't be any worse than safeguard...)

An 11 year old NAS? I'm surprised it's even SATA III. Maybe it could "accidentally" fail. If it's that old probably loads of security fixes missing too. I agree. Iscsi or scrap!

Another we've had recently. Our new prefab building has walls that can't support the weight of touchscreen/projector. (They are basically foam). At the design stage they added extra ply layers which was great ....until staff wanted a second screen fitting in another place. The only option then was wheeled trolley.

Make sure you have enough high level network ports for AP's and projector/screens. Don't put ICT suites on the south side of the building. Don't put the network server/cabs in the dirty, hot insecure plant room. If you have laptop trolleys where are you going to store/plug them in, ideally each socket on separate RCBOs so they don't trip a single ring main. Good luck!

Still on win 7 and looking to change in October next year when our servers are out of warranty. Who know by then windows 10 might work properly.

We have SG300's here which are similar and haven't seen any issues in over 6 years. What firmware are you on? Have you used the Cisco monitoring application (can't remember what it's called) to look at logs and errors. Could it be a loopback or faulty network card? When you get the error does everything look ok on the DHCP server, including logs?

We use insight quite a bit and they have been consistently good on price and delivery.

My thoughts too. Our school was 50 years old a few years ago and staff put together a presentation of all kinds of pictures etc showing it through the years. I'm guessing that just won't be possible in future.

No but each one has unique signature so can be traced. Also with single use ribbon you have a complete record of what's been typed, athough they were only used on electronic typewriters usually with daisy wheel.
