Staff having local admin on their laptops
clockend25 replied to Icangoogle's topic in How do you do....it?
We have for 2-3 years, however have decided to stop doing so as part of some improvements to security across the board. -
We keep it set to 18 but it probably keeps the room at around 20 degrees. All I know is the server room is a pretty glorious place to be at this time of year.

Been listening to the cricket so my sound was turned up.

[NRA]Guns for teachers.[/NRA] Always a little unnerving when something like this happens. Glad the fella is in a stable condition and hope they find the perp quickly.

Two positions teaching ICT here, one of which has been a revolving door in terms of staff for the last three years, filled by short-term cover and teachers from other subject areas. Looking at the year 8 options process this year, I think the numbers doing the subject from year 9 onwards has plummeted quite dramatically. It's very much a fringe subject now both in terms of interest from the students and attention from leadership. We've been trying to recruit a permanent IT teacher for a couple of years now without success. Bit worrying, really.

How big are your users home areas?
clockend25 replied to abillybob's topic in Windows Server 2008 R2
No restrictions on ours. Having checked we have 7 users with more than 10GB in their areas. If anyone takes massive liberties then they're told to sort it. It's usually someone banging their entire iTunes library on to N:\ Deduplication means it should be a while before even the most dedicated hoarders threaten to fill our storage. -
Might recommend this to the next member of staff who asks for recommendations for a new device.

Office 365 - Do you have staff and students on the same tenant?
clockend25 replied to tj2419's topic in Cloud Services
Our groups are locked down so that only certain people can send mail to them. -
Disk failures - how often do you experience them in your servers?
clockend25 replied to localzuk's topic in Hardware
Two in nearly six years. One in one of our old RM file servers, the other in our new setup after the air con failed over a weekend and the units ran hot for an extended period of time. -
Used it here for a couple of years and found it pretty easy to rollout and manage. As above haven't had any outbreaks and it seems to nip most things in the bud with minimal fuss. Definition updates go out via WSUS with the GPO option to install updates immediately set.

[news] The BBC kill off Her Majesty
clockend25 replied to unixman_again's topic in Jokes/Interweb Things
Sooner we get rid the better. The fact that people resort to tourism as a justification for having these unelected numpties lording over us says it all really. In any case, anything tourists are drawn here to see would still remain and in fact could be opened up further if certain squatters were evicted, making them better attractions. Citizen not subject. -
Office 365 - Do you have staff and students on the same tenant?
clockend25 replied to tj2419's topic in Cloud Services
Same tenant. Students are listed with their full name, staff with just their first initial and second name. -
We've also had a 60-user license from Techsoft for a number of years now. No issues.

[sims] Microsoft Security Patch causing issues with SIMS7 Date Picker
clockend25 replied to MrMat's topic in MIS Systems
Last advise I was given was to download it from My Account and import it into SOLUS. I'll call them again. -

Should this patch now be available in SOLUS3? -

Colour printing - how do you control yours
clockend25 replied to SteveB_NI's topic in How do you do....it?
We control it through Papercut. Only a few small group of staff have colour privileges now, the rest can send colour printing through reprographics with their line manager's authorisation. Students can no longer print in colour and instead work is collected up and then printed centrally in repro. We implemented this after we spent nigh on £4k on colour printing alone in the last quarter of 2014. There was some moaning to begin with but now it's been in place for a while people just get on with it. It's certainly reduced costs massively. So restricted, centralised colour printing. -
We've got Meraki MR18s and MR26s. They work very well and the system is incredibly easy to configure and manage.

Interactive Panels, several demos in....
clockend25 replied to paulellam's topic in AV and Multimedia Related
For those of you going down this route, how viable is it financially in comparison to having projectors and IWBs instead? I haven't been able to find a way of getting a similar size screen ("70+) without spending massively over the £1700 we'd usually budget on kitting out a classroom. -
Yes, that's just copy cost.

Backup solution for the virtualised world
clockend25 replied to localzuk's topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Veaam would seem to be the way to go. We use DPM at the minute but it's a complete liability when it comes to reliably backing up de-duped volumes. -
We have roaming profiles on our curriculum machines and depending on the spec it takes between 10 and 30 seconds to log in. Slightly longer if no profile already exists.

Ours are boring, functional, obvious names. Just my preference. I'd really, really like to write a disaster recovery plan with some of the naming schemes you lot have on the go, though.
