  1. Whats the nodetype? (ipconfig /all) ? I found PC's would not get DHCP's when this had some how changed from Hybrid
  2. We use Canon Scanners and they work no matter what level your logged on as.
  3. Now i have word searchs in the VLE, i want to be able to create basic drag and drop things. For example Science, match the symbol to the word, ie picture of a skull and crossbones to the word Toxic, Fire to Highly Flammable. But which program do i need to create such things? and is it hard? i've never used Flash or Shockwave, and i would need a dummy tutorial.
  4. Anybody know any tools out there for creating word searchs that run in web browsers instead of printing them off? We want some for our VLE, but all the ones i find are for printing out.
  5. I name all my servers after planets, i did think of chocolate bars at one point, but thought planets would be OK. I flattly refused to use Server1, Server2, boring is not the word!
  6. Use delprof.exe its in the 2003 resource kit from Microsoft.
  7. PCounter can do this, you create client codes, then it asks which department to bill to in a popup window.
  8. I had this problem, so i altered the way i disable internet. I made a new group called "Internet Disabled", made a group policy apply only to those groups which put in DISABLED:0000 in the proxy settings with no overide. Then just add the student to that group.
  9. Thats how i do my Home Directorys, i do not see the point in having a share for each user. Its very clean and quick doing this way.
  10. Well the utility is there really, just needs customising.
  11. I had to make it using the tools microsoft provide with Windows, took less than 5 minutes to make. All you have to do is make sure the 2003 Server Admin tools package is on each workstation (MS do an MSI package that goes out via group policy), then click start, run, type in MMC. That should give you a blank Microsoft Managment Console. Then add in the Active Directory Users and Computers plug in. Once that is done click on your root pupils organisational unit and click "open new window from here" So Teachers only see what they need to. Then on your new window, right click the root organtisation unit for the pupils and click "New taskpad view" Now select horizontal list and style as text click, next and next until that wizard ends and a new one starts. Now you want a menu command, if you select a user account on the left, the menu commands appear for that object on the right, so select change password, give it a name and some text and an icon. Now you will notice when you select a user the "Change Password" task appears in the task pain on the bottom . Now just click file options, give it a nice icon and a nice name, and bang you have fancy looking password manager for teachers. You can do what i did and add extra shell commands in too. O, forget you need to delegate allow changing of passwords to the staff group!
  12. You do not need any of these software password managers. Windows comes with the stuff for a password manager for teachers. This is what i have on my Vanilla Windows 2003 Network with no extra software bits. (See attached photo) The tools come with Windows Server, i do not know why others are not using them.
  13. I've given the less computer/office literate users in the school and the more office literate users a little play with Office 2007. Both seemed to prefer it after a few minutes of using it. Its more intuitive then previous versions, all functions are always where you need them. We WANT to buy it when it comes out, if we cannot afford we shall have to stay with Office 2003 for a bit longer. ICT want the save as PDF feature. It just looks so tasty.
  14. I to have been playing with beta 1 for a while, but not tried beta 2 yet. But yes the interface is like "WOW". It makes Office 2003 look so dated.
  15. I would 100% not recommend going to the paying money to get somthing like RM Connect, CSE or Ranger. Like others have said you do not need it as you already have a Vanilla network. I think you just need some help from us to make your network do what you want. Can you give us an example of a problem you have with software rollout in detail?
  16. I just called the the KS3 RM Junk because all the documentation had RM all over it.
  17. Am i the only one who very rarely gets stressed in the IT job then? I have to wait around for hours for somthing to do, and there is only me and all the PC's and Servers. The only thing in the last year that has stressed me out is those bloody KS3 Tests RM junk.
  18. Has anybody gone through the Job Evaluation process and had an outcome yet? If so did your pay go up, down or stay the same. It seems to be taking for ever in staffordshire.
  19. I get on more with the Science department than the IT department. The head of IT is "out of touch"
  20. Is it folder redirection thats causing your delay? I get this too if i use them, but only on SP2 XP PC's. So i just manually set them in the user.dat ?
  21. I do not see us ever using Open Office or Star Office. We have enough Office 2003 licences, we have well over 100 Office 2000 licences not being used and almost 100 Office 97 licences not being used. We would use those up before going to Open Office. We also plan to move to Office 2007 early next year i really like using the interface on it, so we would have loads of Office 2003 licences doing nothing.
  22. Luckly its not a problem at the moment, if students ask i say no. I remember not so long ago a student teacher said can i use my laptop on the network just for internet. My reply was does it have upto date antivirus software on it? She said yes, i believed her and in she plugged. 3 minutes later phone call "all the machines keep shutting down in the library". Hello Blaster.................. library was the only place still running SP1 XP. I was not happy. I would not let kids plug there kit in if i was you.
  23. We have 11 Servers, 260 client PC's / Laptops, 500 kids and 45 Staff members. 1 Domain Controller / Public and Shared Drives 1 Domain Controller / User Home Directorys 1 Intranet/ Electronic Testing / Class Server / Success Maker 1 Print Server 1 ISA Server / Exchange Server 1 Sims / Pars 1 RIS Server / Software 1 Terminal Server (So staff can run Sims, Pars etc from home) 1 Laptop Backup Server (Staff robocopy there Laptops my documents to the server incase laptop dies) 1 Backup Server (Robo copys all shared folders, public drives, users folders everynight so i have a fail safe server) 1 Quake III Server
  24. What do you mean by merge? Like if you have an All Users folder "Applications" and a Users "Applications" its seen as one menu? If you mean this then yes this happens. All i can recommend is you have a script at the same time as the profile copy to the machine to delete everything in C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu, and make sure all shortcuts come from the profile for that set of PC's.
  25. You cannot have mandatory profiles and GPO's. Windows DOES NOT apply them when its a user.man and not a user.dat. A pain i know, as i had this problem. What is it your trying to achieve with the mandatory profiles?
