    P[r]oxy problem

Do you have folder redirection on the same policy as internet explorers maintence settings? I can find this artical which says in SP2 Computers with folder redirection and IE's settings in , the folder redirection fails. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888254 Its not the fix your after, but i found my PC's did the reverse, IE's settings failed and folder redirection worked. Do you have any SP1 machines you can test this on just to confirm its somthing MS have messed so SP2 broke it? If its the problem i had you'll find no SP and SP1 machines do as you expect. This person has the same problem http://groups.google.co.uk/group/microsoft.public.windows.group_policy/browse_thread/thread/152005cadb5a7850/64cbdc02315ee225?lnk=st&q=internet+explorer+proxy+not+applied+windows+xp&rnum=1&hl=en#64cbdc02315ee225 it was Application Data redirection on the same group policy that was the problem.

    P[r]oxy problem

Are they Windows XP Service Pack 2 clients? As Service Pack 2 broke the GPO for Proxy Settings and they do not get applied. Cannot find the support artical now, but i had this problem last year and found SP2 to be the cause.
  3. To get around the IP problem i've put reservations in the DHCP Server for all Lab workstations, pain i know, but its what i had to do.
  4. Thanks geoff, i saw that and thought it was for programmers, but i'll take a closer look now. As for ISA 2004, what extra things can it do that ISA 2000 cannot? As i do not have a clue.
  5. Were having an Internet re-think here now. We have decided to go down the Walled Garden approach. So the default stance of a PC is only sites in our allow list get through, (ie Office online, Bytesize etc) so that the kids do not go off to things the should not be in lessons. I've got this working in ISA Server 2000 now, i've created different Client Sets for different labs. We still need it to allow full normal internet at the teachers request, which is easy remove the Client set from the Apply part. BUT at the moment you have to do this from the server, and that means i have to do it. I've looked around for the ISA Server MMC Snapin and cannot see one. I would rather some nice interface with only the part they needed was there, but its not. Is this a difficult task? Any ideas on how to solve this problem?
  6. Looks like i'm defo going to hold off for version 4 then. Version 4 should kick ass.
  7. I've seen my workstations auto go back to Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon after a few minutes. What happens when the screen saver kicks in? Does it go back then?
  8. Looking at all these options in Censornet, am i right in thinking that you can have it so internet is off by default in a group of PC's , but still allow certain sites in at all times (such as office clip art, bytesize if i wanted)
  9. Is it only me that Symantec products seem to kill? We originally used Symantec Antivirus, but it had such a performance impact that we had to remove it off all the PC's, it was awfully slow. Take Antivirus off PC's are like extreamly fast again.
  10. I'm currently using ISA Server. We have an RM Not So Smartcache too that the county gave us, used it for a very short while then stopped using it, its an awful peice of crap and went back to ISA Server. I'm sure our county is getting a backhander off RM since nobody in there right mind would buy one of these not so smartcache's and they put one in every school (along with recommending CC3 and the broadband coming via these idiots, but thats another story/thread) This Censornet is 99.9% perfect, so when version 4 comes out i think i'll be changing to it. I'm just not happy over the whole asking for your login details again, it began to piss me off when i was just testing and playing with the box.
  11. My concern is kids typing in other kids usernames and passwords, as they like to share passwords (Stupid kids). So that would mean, internet blocked, i'll use my mates logon. or lets logon as person X who i do not like and search for porn. If they are stupid enough to let others know there passwords then its there fault i know, but its not going to stop that problem.
  12. Nope, i did not do that, it works now. Do not think i'm going to use this, its great apart from one thing. You have to login! It needs to be intergrated. Might have to wait for version 4.
  13. Just installed Censornet on an old box to play with but its driving me crazy! Internet will not work with its proxy. Put 2 network cards in it as it said too (even though i only need 1 as its being a filtering proxy not a firewall) Gave Private card 10.134.32.5 and the public one 10.134.32.6. Subnet 255.255.252.0 Put the upstream proxy in that i know works, put the countys DNS servers IP's in. I can now connect to the web interface, i have imported my users from Active Directory, the status of all the services is OK. So why when i put the proxy as 10.134.32.5 port 8080 will nothing happen? Just page cannot be displayed? Its driving me crazy
  14. Anybody used/got one of these yet? Thinking of getting 6 of these printers as they are on offer at the moment. £155 for a laser printer with toner and network capable. (Is £305, but £150 cashback offer) It has some nice features like limiting Black and White only during the day, password protecting the colour feature, and 20 ppm colour! But before i go and splash the cash was wondering if anybody has anything to say about this model.
  15. I have to agree with the Tech argument too. Running a vanilla system means i have more time to do other jobs. The Vanilla system has been in place for more than 2 years now and has had down time of once (for less than 2 mins because of a bluescreen on one of the servers) It took 1 month to have fully in place and working and does just that works. The most technical job i have to do now is creating users, since i designed the group policys, active directory layout and scipts i know what does what and so i the event of a change or problem i can find out what very quickly, without having to phone RM and wait to see what the problem is. If i have other issues i have the Microsoft Knowledge base which normally has the answer without having to login or have a support agreement. When i look back to how much time i have wasted on the old Connect 2.4 system we had in place before hand when RM released a patch only for all workstations to need a rebuild because it fucked them up, i'm glad were "normal" now. Will not make the same mistake twice and give RM our money, were not blind. Taking into account the money savings, tech time saved (and not have to apply performance patchs because logon takes 10 minutes 8O ) going non RM seems very sunny. But obviously if your already have RM Connect 3 in and its working for you and your not planning to expand then going vanilla might be pointless and you will not save money, you'll just have the kids asking there manager at work when they have left school "where is RM Explorer?", "how do i logoff?, i cannot see it in the bottom right hand corner" or when they get to College/Uni "What does 'Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to logon mean?"
  16. I did think about doing this but the problem was that most mounting methods in Daemon Tools world offer only static mounting. Clicking on an icon should mount to the first free virtual drive as there are limited number availible. This means of Geography CD 2 and History CD 3 map to drive 1 then they can't selected together even if there are only ones being used during a logon session. You can specify which CD-ROM Drive to put the CD in either device 0,1,2 or 3. But i always mount to device 0 since they only run one multimedia app at once.
  17. Remember this is only necessary for applications which require a CD-ROM in the drive while running. If a number of such apps are need on a particular room, it would be nice to be have as many as possible before the user needs to mount and unmount images. Of course it cuts down on the number of free network drives but this isn't normally a problem. Anyone tried Axis or Avantis? I install Demon tools on every PC, then create shortcuts that have the Icon of the program, but actually mount the CD then load the program automatically, seemless to the user. Is this not an option?
  18. How come 4 CD-ROM Drive limit is a problem, what software comes on more than 4 CD's as a full install?
  19. Without sounding like I'm some strange bloke who likes to argue a lot ... Bloody hell ... have never heard of transferable skills? Don't teach the kids to use an application ... teach them lots of different applications and how to adapt to use the different interfaces. We don't want everything to look the same ... we want them to learn how to adapt. The fact that they are having to learn something other the M$ Office or an M$ Office clone is a good thing. They should be doing more of it ... using photoshop, fireworks and GIMP ... using publisher and scribus and other DTP packages ... audacity and cool edit pro ... Windows XP, Mac OS X and various flavours of Linux ... Give them a variety so they learn the skills to change. After all, what they are taught in schools now is not going to be what they get out into the real world. The major gripe I have is that because this is not going on in earlier years it means that teachers have to spend such a long time teaching the kids how to take the test rather than having already taught them about swapping between different systems. There ... rant over ... not so much aimed at you Quaker, but aimed at the short sightedness of some ICT Departments. But who else was going to run it? Would you have allowed Heinnenman, Pearson Longman or Nelson Thorne (this progam will only work if you install this part of the server on one machine, this part on another and the last part on your DC, and agree to lower all security settings on your machines to allow for it to work!)? Better the devil you know in this case. I agree that the kids should be able to transfer skills between applications, but its the quality of the apps in this program that are the problem, they are dire. Like it or not Microsoft Office or Open Office are the interfaces the kids are going to see for a very long time and is used in a lot of companys in the world that they will one day work for. As for who else to do the testing software, well Heinnenman testing software i have installed has been a breeze, Science and Geography stuff we have with them. Edexcel Key Skills online testing was very good compared to this, installed quicker and easier. Tests are allocated easier. Works quite like the RM one, you have a server locally that gets the tests from the main center and you have a client on the workstations, seems they managed to do a good job. This KS3 ICT one does not even automatically pull the tests down from the server, you have to allocate them. All i have seen so far on the whole is very negative comments on this testing software which means they have done something very wrong.
  20. We find the interface is the problem to. The tasks are not hard, but the Wordprocessor and other apps are so difficult to use. At least open office looks and feels very close to MS office, so the kids would be able to switch without problems. But this joke of an interface on the KS3 tests is so un-userfriendly its not funny. Its taken days for the IT teachers to get use to this highly primiative interface, and they still cannot do all the things they want in it. We are now wasting our time teaching the kids how to use an interface they will never see or use again in the life. Its stupid. I think it should look and feel the same as Microsoft Office or Open Office then you would know where you are. I knew this KS3 Test software would be an absoulute pain the second i saw the RM logon attached to the letter, the second they are involved things get silly.
  21. We had this problem, so i just disabled the Lock Workstation option for pupils.
  22. If you are happy with CC3 then why are you moving? Somebody happy with RM 8O Maybe they want to be "Real" Network Managers. heheheheh We moved away from Connect 2.4 2 years ago, saw Connect 3 and i ran a mile. (and saved the school £80,000). The best place for help is go to Microsofts web site and download the White Papers for each part, such as Group Policy, Active Directory, RIS etc and it will fully explain how each part works and best practices. Also you have us here which will prob be the best help.
  23. That by 2008 they want the kids work not to be kept on the schools servers, but on the internet, advantage being that the same work folder follows them from primary school to high school to college etc... Anybody else heard of this? I found out from our LEA's broadband department. Although the idea sounds good, it sounds like a nightmare to me.....
  24. If you use PCounter for the print auditing (£400 a server), you can give students credit/ have charge codes for different departments....... We just have about £3000 a year for printing consumables (500 kids in the school). I just give out £0.50p a week to lower school, £1.00 a week to upper, staff can give more credit if need be for coursework. Seems to work for us.
  25. Currently our broadband is 2Meg fibre supplied from RM  via the LEA. We currently pay £4750 a year for this service. Its currently doing my head in, if i want a port opening its £300 charge from RM (just for somebody to alter a few lines in a firewall rule! ) We only have 4 public IP's, everything i want to do the LEA want a 200 page report as to why, i'm ready to scream down the phone at them. So i've been looking into getting a leased line from somebody else and telling the LEA what to do with there heap of over priced junk from RM. Anybody here not with RM for their internet link? If so who with, what speed and how much is it costing you? We have ISA Server as a proxy at the moment (i've seen some nice filtering software for ISA Server out there, as i believe this is a requirement for schools to have "filtered" lines) We were also given an RM Smartcache from the LEA too, but that is about as much use as well i do not know, its just useless. I'm getting a call from Claranet on monday, and NTL have already quotes £5500 for 2 Meg.
