  1. Class server is a VLE. We have it. Its basically an electronic version of paper, for tests and assignments. You make multiple choice, fill in the blank, match the pairs questions, all with information and links to resources around them. You then give it out to students, they log in, complete it, the server marks it for you, it comes back to the teacher's screen with all the grades. If its used by many departments it can be ideal for homeworks.
  2. All workstations have the Active Directory admin tools on. So all staff are allowed to open it and change the passwords in the students containers. They seem happy with that.
  3. What i do is create a package to install that script on the local machine, push it out via Active directory/Group Policy Software installs. Then for all users have them run the script on logon. When our students logon group policy runs c:\local\printers.vbs. They get the correct printers.vbs depending on which organisational container they are in.
  4. Your not the only one, since yesterday my clients have freezed for a few seconds when loading the desktop after logging on, and seem to take longer.... is there a time bomb is MS's code lol ?
  5. I am really confused to what this actually is. It makes no sense.
  6. I do not suffer from this problem. Have you tried running word etc before you upload the profile?
  7. I'm confused. When i redo a RIS on that same PC, it knows what the PC name is and where it belongs just select Automatic setup. Its only the first time out of the box you would have to set the PC name, which is less hassle then typing in a PC name and the long GUID. Have i got the wrong end of the stick? but the idea of typing in the GUID's for every PC seems like a very long winded task when RIS does it automatically for you the first time you use RIS on a client PC. No it doesn't. RIS reads the GUID\MAC address straight from the motherboard. It does this to check whether you computer is on a managed account. If you prestage the computer i.e. create the account and manually enter the MAC adress or GUID, then when you log onto RIS on the client computer it will automatically show the computers name before imaging starts. If the computer is not prestaged it will give it some random name (RIS1, RIS2, RIS3 etc). Do you get this screen when you do a RIS install? http://www.microsoft.com/library/media/1033/technet/images/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/deploy/depopt/remote08_big.gif If you select custom setup rather than automatic you can enter a computer name. It will then create a computer account on the server put the GUID in the Managed computer field for you put it into the OU you specify in the RIS client setup screen so it saves time manually creating computer accounts and typing the GUID when RIS does all that for you. It only does the RIS1, RIS2, RIS3 random name thing like you say when you select Automatic setup and it has no GUID data in Active diretcory for that PC. As long as you do custom setup for the first time out of the box, you can use Automatic setup in future as it will know what the PC name is from the GUID.

  9. I do not think its that microsoft have slowed down, but that computer development as a whole as. In the past the next version has always offered so many reasons to upgrade. DOS - Windows (The interface) Windows 3.1 - Windows 95 (Plug and play support) Windows 2000 - XP (NT based OS that can finally run most programs) What "new" thing do you need to get Vista for? We still have PIII 666Mhz PC's in use in the school, they are 6 years old, but they still run Office 2003 and Windows XP fine, i cannot see any reason to "upgrade" them, they run Office no worse than a P4 PC, maybe just 1 or 2 seconds difference in loading Word. What i'm getting at is the upgrade cycle has slowed down hardware wise , unless your a gamer. Its not like the 90's anymore, where a PC became out of date in months. Also you have one line of Windows now, not two, so the gaps will seem longer. Remember you had Windows NT 4 in 96, then Windows 98, then Windows 98 SE, then Windows 2000 then Windows ME then Windows XP. Makes them look like they do more with 2 different products of Windows.
  10. Is it not quicker and less hassle to set the PC name when you start the install on the client? If you choose the custom setup you can type in a computer name and it will create that computer account for you, then just move them to the correct OU. Thats how i do it.
  11. Are those servers populated by kids or do you have a full internet connection? Would love to do that myself just to give them a pasting but a full version of Q3 sitting on network shared to multiple kids at lunch doesnt sound good Populated by kids of course. They are getting very good at it now, we have beat the teacher challenges.
  12. Right here is the script. First i copied delprof.exe into the netlogon folder. Then i created another share called "desktops" with a folder structure for each room. Put a profile as you want it in each folder. Then put a group policy on the OU for that set of PC's and under computer policy add a batchfile as a startup script. Use the following script in that batchfile. (my script also sets the res on startup using res.exe) NET USE K: \\chesterton-high\netlogon /persistent:no NET USE W: \\moon\desktops /persistent:no k:\delprof.exe /q k:\res.exe 1024 768 32 75 rd /s /q "c:\documents and settings\Default User" xcopy /i /y /h /e w:\windowsxp\room5\*.* "c:\documents and settings\Default User" net use /delete * /y Now just make sure you have NO default user in the netlogon folder and that the users have no profile path set and when they logon they should pick up the local Default User. Which on moden SATA PC's is very fast. You could use robocopy instead if you wanted it to only copy modified bits. I might look at that my self later, but since this works like a dream i am not breaking it. EDIT: Also with printers i make the profiles have no printers on then use this vbs script to add printers (use an MSI to deploy right script to right room). Set WshNetwork = CreateObject("WScript.Network") WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\venus\r26amono" WshNetwork.AddWindowsPrinterConnection "\\venus\r26acolour" WshNetwork.SetDefaultPrinter "\\venus\r26amono"
  13. I swapped the bulb and assembly with one of another one in the school and it works fine now. Thanks.
  14. Anybody had this. We turn the projector on, it begins the countdown from 30 seconds, gets to either 3 or 5 seconds then switchs off. We have cleaned all the filters and it still does this. Any ideas? Its an SU-30
  15. Profiles are stored locally. There is a share on the server with a folder for each suite of PC's. In there is a profile. You get the desktop startmenu exactly has you want it in that suite. Copy it to the correct folder on the server. When the PC boots up there is a group policy with a startup script which deletes the local "Default User" folder, and copys accross the correct profile from the server. It then runs delprof to delete all local profiles. So the machine is clean. Then when a student logs on because there is no profile path set it simply uses the local default user. When ever i want to update the look of the desktop i simply copy it to the server and on next reboot the PC's pick it up. In the 2 years the system has been in i have experenced no spyware, no adaware. Its fast and clean
  16. heh, is that an "official" server then? Wonder if I can sneak one into my budget proposal this year. Lets just say it runs 2 Quake III Servers, and they hold 40 a server, and at lunch times they both become "full"
  17. On our fastest PC's (P4 2.8's 512MB RAM) the logon speed from logon screen to desktop being seen is 3 seconds. About 5 seconds to being fully useable and everything loaded. We do not use roaming profiles, we have mandatory profiles. I spent many hours when setting up the system just on performance.
  18. I wasn't aware that Microsoft released a server edition of 3.11 Never seen NT 3.xx ? The power of NT with the interface of 3.1. Very nice. Our oldest is an RM RX 7 years old, duel PIII Xeon 550Mhz 1GB RAM current job, schools Quake III Server. Runs Windows 2003 fine.
  19. I have been given a new CD for success maker with a new module on. It has no installer, its just a cd of folders. How do i go about installing it on Success Maker (network version). We do not have a support contract so RM are not very helpful.
  20. Just seen this http://www.rm.com/Secondary/Products/Story.asp?cref=PS321950&catref=1624.2.3.299 What exactly did RM do to this Vanilla 2000 network to make it 9 minutes from power to desktop? I think they got the 2 figures the wrong way around, as when the head of IT went to a conference to do with GNVQ IT the other head of IT's were saying that their connect 3 networks took an age to boot, between 5-10 minutes from power button being pressed and were shocked when my head of IT told them that our vanilla network took 55 seconds.
  21. Not really. Whats the difference between adding users in a vanilla system in active directory then adding users in RM connect? Whats the difference between deploying software via MSI packages on a group policy or using RM connect? As for spending more time doing things that RM Connect does automatically i cannnot think of anything. RM Connect 3 is an overpriced print quota software. If you had 300 PC's that would be £30,000 wasted on CC3 client licences. The tools RM Connect 3 offers are no longer needed since Windows 2000 was born. Now all RM Connect does is get in the way and give users an interface they will not find in industry. RM Connect is bad for students. It wastes schools resources big time, and allows some people to think they are system administrators when they are infact clueless and some from experience go cross eyed when shown group policy's, how to edit them and active directory and do not understand that this what RM Connect is using. How the hell are people who do not know what Active Directory or Group Policy's are allowed Administrator rights on a 2000/2003 domain. I know there are some out there who do run RM Connect 3 and do know a lot about the more technical side. But the amount of people i see being paid more than me to run Connect 3 networks and are clueless really pisses me off big time. I'll put my claws away now.
  22. Are you wanting to use runas on an already open share? If so that you cannot do what you want to do. Its the same as you cannot use runas to run exe's on network drives since your already taking to the server using one set of credentials. Older versions of Windows NT allowed this but XP and 2003/2000 server do not. Microsoft altered the way access to shares works and your user sessions.
  23. I've got webdav working for remote My Documents access, but it loads in a list view, not webfolder view. If you click file, open and copy the URL in the open box and tick" open as web folder" it works. But i want it so they just click and and it opens in webfolder view, how do i do this? Is there something i have to put instead of http? on the link?
  24. Why not just go to the print que, click security, and add the staff group to full control of the que, like you would on a vanilla system?
