How many Windows XP Installs do you have? Do you have like a Windows XP Windows XP SP1 Windows XP SP2 ? As the text mode part is done from the first Windows XP Install that was put on RIS. I made the mistake once of not adding the drivers to the original XP install so the text mode part would work.

Yeah, its steadystate we use, but only the disk protection part. If you download the 2.5 Beta, then go to the Microsoft support forum for it, there is code there to make things scriptable.
-
We use Windows Disk Protection to freeze the state of the hard disks, so they can delete change what the hell they want, reboot and all is back to normal, coupled with group policy settings restrictions to lock down the desktop, and using mandatory profiles.

What happens if they do not logoff/shutdown , but just switch it off? Will the logged on count not go wrong?

Moving from CC3 to something else?
Quackers replied to reggiep's topic in Network and Classroom Management
To be fair the comment is not that wrong. RM Connect is or was designed for schools with no technical people on site, where the IT teacher has to look after the computers, and has no understanding of anything more than Word, Excel, and Flow Control. So the IT Teacher can click and the product makes the changes that a normal technician would understand no problem, so the product spoon feeds you, babys are spoon fed. Instead of altering 2003 Server/XP Directly, you asking this product to do it for you. I think that was the angle Grommit must have been taking -
Moving from CC3 to something else?

It’s a lot easier than you think, just start now. Have the two systems running side by side, and slowly get it right before going live with it. There is loads of information and help out there, like here. Then think what you can do with the thousands of pounds you have saved not buying RM Connect licenses, so of benefit to the school, and also to you as it will make your skills so much more. -
Either buy them with Vista Business, then wipe them, install XP Pro from a volume licence disc, or buy with Vista Basic, then buy a Windows Upgrade licence from Select, then wipe and install XP Pro. Thats what we do.

Thanks, did that , rebooted, and now its working as needed.

We have a server running IIS6, called neptune. We wanted to start using Class Server again on this box, so i installed it today, but its doing somthing weird, and i do not understand it. Whilst logged on locally to neptune i can get to http://=http://neptune - i see the website http://neptune/home - i see our joomla web site http://neptune/ccsc/student/signin.aspx - i can see the class server site for pupils http://neptune/ccsc/admin/ - i can see the admin site for class server now for the weird one if i go to any other machine on the network i can get to http://=http://neptune] - i see the website http://neptune/home - i see our joomla web site http://neptune/ccsc/student/signin.aspx - Internet Explorer just sits there trying to connect http://neptune/ccsc/admin/ - i can see the admin site for class server ALSO, if i reboot the server, for about the first 30 seconds of the server coming up i CAN get to http://neptune/ccsc/student/signin.aspx from a workstation, then it just goes back to hanging. Why why why why is it doing this silly little trick? Both the server and the client i'm logged on as Administrator. If i can get to it from the server, why can i not get to it from a client.

we moved from Connect 2.4 (NT4, Win98SE) to a out of the box 2003 Server and XP Clients. almost everything you need is their already, except print quota's which only cost 400 quid. Not traumatic at all went very smooth, and were happy.

I'm in staffordshire too, and they have put me as "ICT Co-Ordinator". I do the website , were half way through moving to joomla though. and i do everything else, we only have a support contract from Staffordshire Learning Technologys for the SIMS part, as we got rid of RM, so do not need the curriculum support contract, we got rid of the AV support, we do all filter cleans, lamp changes etc our selfs. No hardware support contract, got rid of that, do it all in house or buy extended warrantys. So the head felt that role fitted me best.

Even microsofts own Vista take up stats cannot be anywhere near what they say, evey Vista PC that comes in gets downgraded (or upgraded depending on how you look at things ) to Windows XP, so yes, a Vista licence sold, Vista in use, no.

How much did the 30 machine lapsafe ones cost? Using the leads that come with the laptops?
-
The one thats falling to bits now after a year and a half is Portable Technology Solutions Cannot find a link to the other type we have where the wheels have bent and the trays get jammed or fall. I'm thinking maybe storage cupboards with racks in certain areas, maybe holding upto 60 laptops.
-
We currently have 116 laptops over 4 laptop trollys (not to mention the small racks of 6 laptops in odd departments). A 32, 30, 30, 20 + 4 spares. The oldest one, now almost 2 years old is starting to fall to bits, the trolly shelves are breaking. We also have another trolly, completely different design and brand and has had the wheels bend and the draws get stuck. Staff love them, and love having the ICT in their room, but the trollys seem to just break after so long. Add the fact the power spikes they cause when switched on, and the rummbling when being moved cannot be that good for the laptops, does anybody else have a better idea than trollys? Need a better idea.
-
We have 130 Laptops for student use in laptop trollys, and about 50 staff laptops, and the staff laptops are normally the most trouble. They just do not respect them. We normally have 1 laptop from a laptop trolly a week in, where it either needs to be re-imaged, hard disk has failed, screen is acting strange or a keys been pulled off. Staff laptops its normally lost power pack, broke power pack, football has it their screen and smashed it, or they have been heavy handed with the power port.

It did when we first tested Vista over a year ago, but we've not used Vista since.
-
Buy a select Windows Upgrade licence if it comes with Vista Basic etc. Thats what we do. They are cheap enough. Every machine that comes in, even if its XP gets formated and Windows re-installed. Which i asume everyone on here does too. The crap OEM's insist on putting on is mad. Plus we image for deployments.

They are all PAL and not NTSC or SECAM?

I completed rainbow 6 las vegas: 2 this week (gotta love easter holidays), and i've been playing online like i did the original rainbow 6 las vegas. Gotta agree the gameplay is much better than COD4. Just need to unlock some more achievements now....... another reason to get the 360 instead of a PS3 if your buying it to play games, like i did (which is what a games console is for) the PS3's "Entitlement" is a naff copy of Xbox's achievements.

Well when it was first released i tried it on some machines, and vista was actually quicker on the same hardware for most parts, but the annoyances of this OS are so great it needs binning. (These are all pre SP1) 1) Why when joined to a domain and you type "Administrator" in the username box, it switches from the domain as the logon to, to the local pc. Bring msgina back! the new domain logon screen sucks. 2) Why does it sit there for minutes and minutes saying "Preparing your desktop" (no roaming profiles). I do not have time to wait, i need to use the PC. 3) Why by default are the desktop icons set for blind people? 4) 2 Identical PC's one with XP one with Vista. Double click the shared area on both pc's XP pc in 1 second flat loads the shared area on XP has loaded. Vista 2 minutes later is still slowly loading it 5) Explorer, why does it crash and hang so much. The amount of not respondings its not funny 6) The interface is nothing short of cluttered. Just browsing files hurts my head now , it was more efficient and easier in Windows 3.1s File Manager. 7) Why in explorer must you try and preview every file as thumbnail, then when you turn it off, pictures do not show as thumbnails, the one file type you do want as thumnails. 8) More wizards, as if XP did not have enough! Vista i'm not an idiot, i do not need help! 9) any need for god knows how many different versions of Vista? 2 Max, even thats too many. MS you had it right with NT Workstation and NT Server. 10) System requirments, they are stupid. Why do i need 1gb ram just to play a DVD without jerking? Its somthing Windows 2000 and XP could do on a lot less, the OS is just bloated, and needs stupid requiments to do basic tasks. Might get an old PC out maybe a 500Mhz, 256 Meg RAM, i can surf the internet, play a DVD, word process, file manage, all fine. Now i need 2Gig of RAM, beefy graphics card and Xeon processor just to do the same. 11) File copy, how many days is it going to take? File copying and network share access has worked flawlessly for over 15 years, Vista comes along, can not do basics! 12) So many applications not working (not really vista's fault, but not good when the other list of problems are there) 13) Product Activation. Its too much effort now, i do not like it, KMS Server and all that faffing. I see XP being here for MANY years yet to come. Its mature, works, and does everything needed. All MS needed to do was put the Areo interface on XP. But no, they have made a right mess, this is the only version of Windows i have ever hated. Yes i liked Windows ME

Whats the best content filtering system out there? We currently have our internet connection from the LEA (8 Megabit). Its dire!! I had the head, assistant head, and the rest of the senior mangment team mad this weekend as we had no connection to site since friday evening until 10am monday morning. E-Mail was the main thing they wanted access too, others needed sims/nova t access for cover, and the kids could not terminal in Lack of DNS control, being ripped off for DNS changes, only 4 public ips, no control over the firewall are just a few other annoyances. So we want to get another line in from somebody decent (thinking Zen), and pushing everything through that connection, then lowering the LEA connection down to 2Megabit for things such as SAP access. Obviously we need decent filtering, our current line has RM Safetynet which is quite powerful. Need somthing like this for this other connection. We have ISA Server 2000 as a proxy cache at the moment, was going to use this for a firewall, but for content filtering on it does not seem that good. Toying with Censornet 4 Trial, and 3 Open Source. Any others that are good? They need to have a BIG porn blocklist in already really.
