A few of my close friends work for IT in the non educational world. One thing i have noticed is where i have to manager AD, Exchange, SQL, SIMS, Printers, Switches, Servers, VoIP, Wireless and on and on, in the buisness world they will have each of these tasks assigned to a person or team. So does that make those in charge of Education networks/systems 'Jack of all trades, master of non' ? or just make our roles a lot more demanding.

I always go for Panasonics because of the quality, and its what the TV repair men say are most reliable and long lasting. Caretakers 2 year old Toshiba LCD broke, when the Engineer came out he asked which brand do they go out the least to, he said Panasonics. When the other caretakers son dropped water down the back of his 50" Pannasonic Plasma by accident when watering a plant, the engineer said this is the first time he has had to come out to a Panasonic as they generally do not go wrong. But you will not get a 3D Panasonic for £700 i do not think. Panasonic also have Pionners Kuro technology for the plasma screens

Just noticed your site runs Joomla 1.6, you do know support ends in less than a month for 1.6? Joomla 1.6 End of Life - urgent upgrade required | by Anything Digital LLC EDIT: Just realised they have not change the colours from the light blue in 1.7, so you could be on 1.7.

Is that what you use for your schools site? Yours is the best school website i have seen.

We have used the Moodle Feedback to do surveys in the past with our students. Today we want to try and find out what activity they would like to do each period. So Period 1 Activity A, B, C or D Period 2 Activity A, B, C or D What results we want is to see a list of who ticked Activity A for Period 1, who tickedt Activity B for Period 1 etc. I cannot see a way of doing this in Moodle. Is there another plugin that can do what we want?

Why you say "flakey" connection, do you mean one that goes down/unrealiable? Our LEA likes to give lots of money to RM, then we get charged £50 a time for changes to our DNS records. Such great contracts our county agree on our behalf (not). Our new connection will still be a fibre leased line, with ADSL failover from Zen. Getting 32 Public IP's so can give 2 up for DNS no problem. I am just trying to understand downside to handling the DNS querys onsite, before hunting down somewhere that will host .sch.uk .Does not seem to be much in terms of discussion on the internet on the subject , well not that i can find.

Having a not so fun game trying to get these to deploy. I have read up on appdeploy.com and read a few threads on here relating to it. I can get the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi and iTunes.msi to deploy using the STANDALONE=1 /quiet /passive /norestart switches. The QuickTime.msi just will not play ball, keeps saying a newer version is installed and fails, when its a clean machine! Anybody managed to deploy using the latest version hitch free?

Sibelius 6.2 help needed to create package for RM CC3
Quackers replied to Paul-LHS's topic in Educational Software
After digging around all morning its now working, so for future reference if you run the exe with /silent and then just push out the registry fragments via group policy from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Sibelius Software on a machine you have installed and popped the key settings in. -
Anybody host the DNS for their school domains them selfs? Changing ISP, and they cannot host .sch.uk domains, so was thinking of having the tag changed to the neutral NOMINET tag and then having the name server IP's pointing to 2 of our public ones with Windows DNS Server installed.

I got the Galaxy S2 about 2 months ago, first non Nokia phone i have ever had since 1998, always been a die hard Nokia fan, and i can see why! Previous phone was an Nokia N900, which would last me till about 9-10 at night from 7AM I have to charge my Galaxy S2 2-3 times a day Sometimes when the phone is in my pocket i will start to feel pain, its my phone getting EXTREAMLY hot, it hurts! Call quality is not impressive. If the call is from another Galaxy S2 user i may as well not bother, sound will be muffled as hell, other phones clearer but not as crisp. Do these even support EFR? Reception is poor compared to what i am use to everywhere i go, same network. So took my N900 to work where i would get 3G no issue, side by side N900 1 bar short of full on 3G, Galaxy S2 1 bar. Force 2G on both Nokia full bars, Galaxy S2 2 bars. But i do love the screen, and i am enjoying Android, but as for the hardware, its not upto Nokia standard, yes they might be a bit more 'bulky' , but they at least get a good signal.

Sibelius 6.2 help needed to create package for RM CC3
Quackers replied to Paul-LHS's topic in Educational Software
Did anybody get anywhere with a Sibelius 6.2 Package? -
Insight from TASC Software , it costs us £500 a year (they base it on school size). Plus they will add features for you. For example last week we wanted it to display some info, emailed them, that afternoon a new build was released, feature added, and its a 2 min job to update to the latest version. Best support from any company i have ever used. PM me if you want to take it for a test drive can give you a login to ours. We do have the Sims Learning Gateway to, but i do not like it, its way over priced, slow to add features, and support no where near as good as TASC.

Found the issue, it had GUID comflicts for some reason, merged it and next rebuild it picked the settings up.

Running repair made the Site MOde and Connection Type change to unknown, and the update tab appear. I then rebooted the client machine and its back to how it was in post 1. So no joy.

After having SCCM 2007 Deploying fine for the last week (still testing), its now broken. When i build a station, it completes, but when i go into the Configuration Manager control panel, and click 'Actions' there is only 2 actions listed instead of a long list (Just Computer and User Policy Retrival cycle), update tab nor internet tab is present. General says Site Mode: Mixed Mode and Connection Type is Always Intranet. Its installed in the task sequence with this ccmsetup.exe /mp:digger /logon SMSSITECODE=CHS SMSSLP=digger Any idea what logs i should be checking to see why its playing games?

Thinking over moving over to SCCM 2007 , so giving it a whirl. Almost got there, but one issue that is nagging me i cannot find a solution for. We have 2 Task sequences, 1 for Staff laptops 1 just a standard task sequence for everywhere else. Both for Windows 7. Now say we have a peice of software we want to push out to Teachers laptops, say Serif Draw Plus. We could have a collection called Staff Laptops. We could advertise the software to that collection, and then afterwards update the Staff Laptop task sequence to also install the software. So all staff laptops should silenty install Serif Draw Plus in the background, and if they are re-installed, they will get it via a task sequence. That is all working fine. Except only the ICT Teachers need Serif, and we have software in Science that only the Science Teachers need on there laptops. Logically i would create sub collections under Staff Laptops Collection, ie Science, ICT, then advertise just the deployment of that package to that collection. Except its not that easy as when you re-install the OS any advertised packages do not get re-installed, hence having to add them to the task seqence. I do not want to end up with a task sequence for each department, because when i want to make a change to effect the building of all machines i will have silly amounts of task sequences to modify. Can any SCCM 2007 users see how to solve the issue? The issue seems to be that SCCM 2007 is badly designed and does not see when a PC has been re-installed and re-deploy any advertised packages......

[sims] SLG2 Web Tier (re)Install - Required URLs
Quackers replied to meastaugh1's topic in MIS Systems
Any idea what you put in the box for 'Specify the sharepoint site url' on the next screen? I thought it would be just http:// or http:///SLG but it spits those out saying its not a root sharepoint site url -
Did you get any further climo? Im having the exact same issue.

I tried sequencing SIMS.net yesterday and the installer hangs if the App-V Sequencer is running. If i close the sequencer and run setup again it does not hang. Anybody experienced this? (Its Windows 7).

On a slightly different topic , has anybody hosted there own DNS servers for their internet domain? Would it be as easy as phoning nominet and asking them to change the NS1 and NS2 to 2 boxes running DNS on site that have public IP's? or is there more to it?

I would say go Panasonic. The assistent site managers son accidently spilt water down the back of his Panasonic Plasma TV about 3 years ago, when the engineer came out to fix his tv he said this was this is the first Panasonic they had come out to as they do not generally go wrong. The main site managers Toshiba LCD TV went on the blink and when the engineer came out he asked him what brand he said is the best for reliability and he said Panasonic too. Also Panasonic have Pioneers Kuru technology now. We have LG's at school and seem to have nice features but i do not expect them to have the reliability of the Pannys

No its a .sch.uk domain.
