I think for work purposes i'd always buy new to have the warranty but for my own home setup I've always bought second hand and been just a reliable (same models) I've only ever had HP servers in the last 14 years, never had a single hardware failure, just the occasional HDD. Inherited one Dell server which was a nightmare with failures, so would always go for HP.

That's one reason why I don't usually apply them! As the saying goes if it aint broke don't fix it but I needed it to be on a higher update to support exchange 2016 integration. I wasn't sure if just restoring the entire WindowsImageBackup from a backup by booting from the server install disc would have restored it back to the working state easily or whether id' have to clean install windows first then restore from the backup? In my 14 years I've never had to restore exchange or had a exchange server break, touch wood, until now.

Finally getting somewhere on the bodged install! I found a download for resolving issues installing or uninstalling software https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/17588/fix-problems-that-block-programs-from-being-installed-or-removed I entered the product ID that it was looking for the original source for as I knew what that was and wasn't in the list. I then re-ran the CU setup with recover switch and it's now installing it and got passed Language Packs: Completed! Fingers crossed!

So here goes... i had an exchange 2013 server with cu 6 installed happily running no issues for years, never had a reason to apply updates and with starting to think about migration to 2016 wanted to bring the server up to date with the cumulative updates. Noticing that microsoft only provide downlaoad links for the last 2 updates i had no choice but to jump up drastically to update the server. All seemed to be going well until the step of installing language packs. The setup failed and told me it failed due to another version of the product being installed so install halted and all services disabled. I searched and searched the internet which led to copying files from other working servers, deleting reg keys, all to no avail. In add/remove programs it had already changed the entry to exchange server 2013 with cu 18 . changing the services back to automatic and rebooting including iis resulted in owa and ecp being broken and unable to load . I found language packs from another server and uninstalled what i could with no change when trying to re-run the setup. I was now in state of a broken inaccessible server by outllok, owa and ecp. at one point it did ask for the language pack msi for CU6 but i not longer had the files and no where to be found online. My last resort was to spin up a new vm and install exchange on a second server. as the information store was still accessible in the broken server i was able to carry out mailbox migrations to the second server using the ecp on the new server. What would be the normal solution in this situation be when an update refuses to install and breaks it. i now cannot uninstall exchange from the original server as it says an error - re-run setup. Therefore i don't see any other way to get the original server working again or without manually removing it somehow and finding some instructions online. Any exchange experts able to help get the original server back functioning or advise to do a manual removal of it including from AD? Thanks.

So essentially you need double the number of uplink ports at the core to the edge switches? Are they over the same fibre cable run and then at the switch you have 2 ports connected, one for management and one for everything else? For the edge switches does the management port connect into the same switch on a port assigned to the management VLAN?

Do your switches have a dedicated MGMT Port? Does your Management VLAN still go over the same uplink to the switch though so if you mess or lose the uplink to the switch you would be unable to access the MGMT vlan to access the switch?

My switches allow you to add client management IPs into it. However I use RADIUS switch authentication using Microsoft NPS to use AD credentials to login, and only those part of a security group will allow login.

I've noticed since the migration to Windows 10 and using WSUS to deploy updates that they don't always install at the scheduled time. Some updates particularly those that increase the build number can take a while so want to do at a weekend or out of hours. My plan would be to set the update to Approved, wake on LAN the computers on a Friday afternoon, then when auto-install and restart the update. This IS set in the GPO However, I know if I do this today the update will download but it won't necessary auto install and restart if needed at the scheduled time. What's the easy way to do this in bulk to save waiting for the WSUS delay? Is there a way to force install the update across all clients other than waiting or buying a product such as batchpatch.

I'm looking to possibly change our domain admin password to something more secure. I already have other dedicated user accounts set up for some software which requires LDAP access etc. Is there an easy way to audit where the password might be used, so I don't use re-set it and give myself a headache breaking things?

I've just gone to the HAP website to see if there are any recent updates. I see that the site hasn't been updated in a while and that Codeplex is shutting down. Is this the end of development for HAP or will there be future updates elsewhere? https://hap.codeplex.com/ Just wondering if it's viable to continue using this as an option or find an alternative. What's everyone else using for remote file access which is free/cheap ? I do have RemoteApp for Live access to network drive mappings but the other option of download and edit, then re-upload is also useful.

No moaning..i do a force shutdown every night , don't have open files backup so if they have files open they wont get backed up. We've not got SSDs in the teacher machines so no need to leave on overnight as quick enough to start up and get logged on. Once I told them how much electric we save by switching them off, everyone was surprised.

I would like to get this working. How do I get the printer itself to appear on clients. I've installed the printer on the server via its shared path \\pcserver\printer name but how do I get this seen from the remote clients? thanks

Does anyone else use MintClass? We've had it for less than a year and last year had numerous sync issues. Since the start of term i've never had so many emails relating to I cant see my form group or class. Anyone else find it a headache with the reliability in their software where they can get through a week without some kind of issue??! Be interested to see how others find using the software.

Hi We have a company who collect our old redundant IT equipment which is usually past it's useable life, so we salvage the RAM, HDDs etc before disposing of and don't bother trying to get any value from them - old Dual Core Pcs. However, I have some redundant IT equipment from an Asset Stripping exercise which may still have some value. Please could anyone advise who they use that will buy old IT equipment off them, or who I could obtain a quote from. I am in Lincolnshire. Usually any old equipment we have is too old to be of any value, but I have some servers and switches which are still in full working order which could be of some value. Thanks in advance.

Hi Just wondering, does anyone know what SIMS report there is, or a custom report where I can just export a list of all the subjects that are being used within SIMS.net for timetabling I can get a complete list of all the possible entries, but I only want a list of subjects being used/taught. Hi If a school has made a video to a song using the song as the backing track , can they legally upload it to Youtube/facebook legally under 'fair use'? I've advised it is against copyright, but I have been TOLD by others (because they do it) that facebook do not allow for educational copyright filters - such a thing?! Also, that is is not for commercial use and only educational use so therefore is legal. However, if it's for educational use, surely it must be only made available on a secure network and NOT available on a public site like Facebook or Youtube. Please could i have some legal backup on this please. - Is what they saying accurate? Thanks.

HiWondered if anyone can help - I have extended the size of a SAN partition directly on the SAN and that shows the full capacity of the volume, and in Disk Management it shows the extra space. However, when I right click on the existing partition, Extend Partition is greyed out. If I right click on the blank partition, I cannot create a new volume either.The Volume is connected via iSCSI Initiator, Can anyone advise how I add the additional free space to the existing volume as the SAN side is correct, just Windows isn't allow me to expand.Thanks.

So it seems that Windows 10 will not play back DVDs in media player. I am looking to deploy VLC across the network, however it there a way to disable it checking for updates when creating the MSI? Alternatively, what have others done on Windows 10 with reference to playing DVDs? Thanks.

I've deployed Windows 10 and having an issue when users want to view images in folders When they double click on the JPG it comes up with you need a new app to open this ms-paint I have been able to find a reg file to re-enable the classic photo viewer which works by group policy but then I cannot work out how to do a Group policy object to set a default open with as it doesn't run as an exe? If I right click on a file, choose another app and select photo viewer, set as default , next time the user logs on it doesn't stick. How is everyone else working with image files on Windows 10 when users want to open them? What are you using? Thanks.

make sure you have a current backup, run any raid diagnostics, or chkdsk, let it reboot and do a full checkdisk for any issues/errors.
