Hi folks, Looking for some ideas/inspiration. I work at a girls school and across the field is the boys school. Until recently, we have had little to nothing to do with eachother. However, last year our head took on a shared headship across both schools and formed an Academy Trust between the two schools. As part of that trust a new position has been offered to manage the ICT strategy and networks for both sites. They have invited me to apply for the role, which I have, and the interview is tomorrow. So not much warning there! I have a few ideas on how to join forces and utilise some shared resources and expertise, but just wondered if there was anyone out there in EduGeek land that has had experience of this type of setup and what some good ideas to take into the interview would be? We are both using RM for our internet provision, so would there be a way of using their network to create WAN between the schools. If not, some kind of physical link or "line of sight" wireless connection would have to be installed. Once we are connected, what are the possibilties bearing in mind that the two schools are to remain as separate institutions. Manage both email domains from one system (Zimbra/Exchange) Share a moodle installation Share Wordpress/Zoomla for our websites Share a sharepoint setup for our Learning Gateway Should I venture into a new Active Directory Forest that combines both domains??? Any thoughts, oh wise ones??

We used to have two constantly open windows and some fans - which sounds awful but had been adequate for the 10 years I've been here! We are in the middle of a huge window replacement project and the builders had removed the old windows and boarded them up with insulated blocks, despite our meetings and agreed plans with them to keep air flowing into the room. Typically we had just asked our electrician for a quote for aheat extractor system to be installed, but a couple of warm days and it became a sauna. We had 3 switches go in total but have been able to jig things around to get everything back up and running. The builders have kindly removed the boarding and will foot the bill for the replacement hardware.

Arrived at 3:15pm last night, so loses a few points there Joking aside, top top customer service. Got it all sorted despite us not having an account setup, nor the means to email any info over! Can't grumble at same day delivery on a switch that most places don't even carry in stock.

What a morning!! Our switch room has basically become a sauna over night and our core switch has overheated an died. It's a 48 port gigabit 3Com monster. We've cooled it, and the room down, but it's not working and we need a new one ASAP. Is there anyone on here that can recommend a switch and/or supplier that's local to us in Birmingham that we could go to and pick up a new switch. They'd need to be able to accept a school order as we wouldn't be paying in cash. We have a budget of about £4k and need a switch that can deal with about 15 servers, 25 switches with approx 250 PCs connected, a Cisco router and firewall and a wireless network of ~100 mobile devices. 3Com or HP preferred but we are open to recommendations. Internet access is limited to a tethered 3G phone, so don't have much scope for extensive research. Solid recommendations and phone numbers would be brilliant. Cheers, Will

Hey all, Might seem like a daft question, but can I plug a new server into my APC UPS whilst it is on and powering 3 other servers. I seem to remember having a problem doing this with my old UPS way back when, but that may have been when I was trying to hook up a CRT monitor. Hi folks, We moved over to SIMS in the summer and have been in the process of getting our SLG up and running. It's all set up properly now and account consolidation is working etc. However, when browsing to our SLG site within school it is automatically attempting to log in using the domain credentials, and until the accounts are consolidated it's generating a error. I believe this is due to pass-through authentication on the IIS server. Is there a way to disable this temporarily whilst we go through the process of getting all our members of staff logged on and consolidated? Cheers, Will

Hey folks. I need some AV gurus to answer a question for me... We've secured a great deal on some new Lenovo A320 Idea Centre PCs that we're installing in a couple of classrooms over the summer. One drawback is that they only have HDMI output for video. This isn't a problem in one room as we've just installed a new Casio LED projector with HDMI input. However, in the other room we have a Toshiba projector with only VGA input. Would something like this work? Or will I need a "proper" converter like this? A middle ground option could be something like this but it appears to be converting the wrong way (VGA to HDMI) - does this matter? Cheers in advance, Will

I'm interested on the outcome of this. I use it every year to create the new cohort but I rebuilt my laptop last week and have subsequently lost the license info. I remember it being free but the website is down now. Am keen to get it fully working again, before it's too late.
