  1. We have these magical storage devices called books. haha... sorry but seriously on day one the kids receive a home college contact book (think diary) there is a section in there for Username and email address for them to write it down.... plus the username never changes so after 5 or 6 years they tend to remember it. I think I might like to look towards some sort of year of entry identification too though, might just put them in year entry OU's though. fooby
  2. I use offline files with pre set locations of startmenu and document folders that are redirected. Staff at home just logon as normal and receive their cached local profile. Not too many problems at all fooby
  3. We had this once or twice, after a few severe disciplinary things (I just want to say bol...) they decided not to. Calling parents, isolated from classes, head of department (Lead Tutor as its called here?!) involved - it stopped. Or 'accidentally' ensure the principal receives quite a few of them. That way it becomes a big problem hehe fooby
  4. For anonymity and for the easiest system ever - we use the Admission number from our school MIS (SIMS) this way 7821 is equal to Joe Bloggs. I have a semi automatic way of creating users in AD by using the numbers then populating the firstname lastname and office fields. Since the admission number is unique per student - it works out easy really -plus they are consecutive (sp?) so its easy to script up creating 1000 folders. fooby

  7. I wouldn't have any policies on my head. Get some sort of management to be aware of this, and that they need to sort it. Maybe even the governors should be involved? While you might write it down, they should decide. fooby
  8. This has been discussed to death in many places.... so if you do a search there will be a wealth of information. I however use AB Tutor control since its £100 (ish) per Tutor licence with no on going fees and no client license. fooby
  9. Possibly... however it is useful then in the future for more custom reg key deployments as the client will have been deployed. I use it for quite a few custom reg key entries here. I think the reg key import idea would be quicker to implement, as it wouldn't require deploying the software and then the GPO. Each to their own - I like the shiny GUI of DesktopStandard. fooby

  12. Still if you really really want to. You will need Regshot DesktopStandard Registry (free) Sticky back plastic (always need this) Get Word open with the setting un ticked. Close it, open it check its unticked. Do a regshot and save it (or something like that - its obvious when you look at the program) tick the option - maybe close and open word? do the second shot and compare find the registry entry relating to disable of backgrounds install and deploy desktopstandard registry add the entries to a group policy object ??? profit!! hope this helps btw desktopstandard registry is amazing
  13. We have had people printing backgrounds here in word. I dont think disabling it will help as all you then need to do is add an object full of colour and stretch it to fill the page? A round of discipline and removal of email / internet access might convince students otherwise... fooby
  14. 20 February Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS) Licensing and Configuration Scenarios First, I've updated my blog and this can now be found at: http://www.stovereffect.com/blog/Lists/Posts/Post.aspx?ID=6 While the information provided by Microsoft on the How to buy Microsoft Office SharePoint Server is absolutely crystal clear, there is still quite a bit of confusion on what licenses are required to run MOSS in any type of production role. In an attempt to demystify some of the confusion, I've put some general information regarding licensing here. Note that below a CAL refers to a Client Access License, which can be licensed in either 'Per User' or 'Per Device'. Also, the CAL licensing model may be mixed, meaning that you purchase some 'Per User' and some 'Per Device' as your needs require. To truly appreciate the CAL licensing model, please visit the Microsoft CAL Guide. Of course, there is also the availability of the Microsoft CAL Suite to provide an 'all-for-one' price for multiple CALs and, maybe even more importantly, provides a very easy mechanism for tracking the CALs through a single license agreement. Additionally, the following is strictly for informational purposes only. Also not that there is a significant variance in pricing depending upon the volume of licenses purchases, but even more so based upon Educational, Government, and Charity pricing (just to name a few factors). For accurate pricing and configuration information, please contact a Microsoft Product Licensing Advisor or a reseller (such as Dell). Some of the pricing info below comes from the following locations: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Related Technologies pricing How to buy Microsoft SQL Server Windows Server 2003 R2 Pricing First, there are no less than ten (10) different products associated with the MOSS product line. Here are the ones that I am currently aware of: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS 3). WSS is a component of Windows Server. This is currently an available download for Windows Server 2003 but will be bundled with the next version of Windows Server (LongHorn). WSS is the technology on which MOSS builds. WSS does not require its own licensing, but rather follows the licensing of Windows Server. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Server License. This license is required to run Office SharePoint Server 2007 in client/server mode. You should use this license with the requisite number of Client Access Licenses (CALs) appropriate for your organizational needs. This is a per server license that does not require the purchase of Client Access licenses. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Internet sites. You may use the software only for Internet-facing websites. All content, information, and applications must be accessible to non-employees. What this means is that if you intend to run MOSS for both your public facing site and your internal use, this license does not cover both uses. You must purchase a MOSS Server license (#2 above) and the requisite CALs for employee use. This license has all the features of the Enterprise Edition of Office SharePoint Server. For complete information about the different features in each edition, read the Office SharePoint Server edition comparison. Microsoft Office Forms Server 2007 Server License. Microsoft Office Forms Server 2007 is a server product built on WSS 3.0 that enables users to fill out Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007 forms by using a Web browser instead of, or in addition to, the Office InfoPath 2007 client program. Microsoft Office Forms Server for Internet Sites. Same product as above, but for Internet-facing websites. All content, information, and applications must be accessible to non-employees. Same rule as MOSS: if you are putting up a Forms Server for both public Internet access and for employee use, you must buy both server licenses and the appropriate number of CALs. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 CAL, Standard Edition. A CAL is required for all employees (actually, any individual that receives a paycheck that will be using the system). As part of this CAL, you get the core capabilities of MOSS. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 CAL, Enterprise Edition. This CAL is an additional license that requires the Standard Edition CAL above. To reiterate this again: this license is an license on top of the Standard license. You must acquire both CALs in order to utilize the Enterprise features, such as LOB integration and search, forms services, Excel services, etc. Microsoft Office Forms Server 2007 CAL. This is the CAL that is required to work with Microsoft Office Forms Server 2007. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search, Standard Edition Server License. This product is strictly the search engine. Microsoft has put a significant amount of effort, time, and money into developing the new search engine that MOSS uses. The search works extremely well, and thus Microsoft is licensing the search engine as a standalone product. This product will seamlessly integrate with Windows Desktop Search, provide appropriate Security Trimming so that users can only access what they have rights to see, search Exchange Public Folders, Lotus Notes, UNC network shares, other websites, and much more. The Standard Edition of the product is limited to 500,000 items. Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 for Search, Enterprise Edition Server License. This license provides the same functionality as the above server (#9), but does not have any item limit. Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007 (SPD). While this may look like FrontPage, it is definitely not FrontPage... Microsoft Forefront Security. Microsoft Forefront Security products help protect your environments against viruses, worms, spam and inappropriate content. I've seen two flavors so far, one for SharePoint and one for Exchange. Below I have outlined general license recommendations and estimated MSRP for several configuration scenarios. The costs associated below Scenario A: Corporate use for 20 employees, single server configuration running WSS 3. Windows Server 2003 R2 standard edition license. Windows Server 2003 CAL, 20-pack. Scenario B: Internet use, single server configuration running WSS 3. Windows Server 2003 R2 standard edition license. Scenario C: Corporate use for 20 employees, two (2) server configuration running MOSS 2007 and SQL 2005. For this sample configuration, all 20 employees will utilize MOSS Standard features, while only 10 of these employees will utilize Enterprise features. 16. Papercut print logger is free, and exports to html csv and xls. Once you have this you can see how many people print what where when. Might help fooby
  17. You might not need the CAL's. Sharepoint Server 2007 isn't an actual product, there is Windows Sharepoint Services v3 and Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server 2007. The MOSS 2007 is a paid for product that you need a server and client license, WSS v3 comes as part of your windows server 2003 license, and (I haven't tried) should load the Web Parts for SIMS.net. On a test server, download windows sharepoint services v3 and see if you can get a test of the sims.net webparts or ask them if they will indeed work on a wss3 server or if they require moss2007. fooby
  18. How do schools run without an MIS? ... or is this cause for a new thread... :-S fooby
  19. We (spend silly money) use SIMS.net and the lesson registration feature of this. If you have SIMS.net afaik you have the lesson register ability already, if your data is correct all your classes will already be populated. fooby
  20. I had to ban the servers from saving Desktop.ini files.. when we went to browse the share it could take upwards of 2 or 3 minutes to list them, it was listing about 1200 folders. fooby
  21. We get for £260 (ish) - 3ghz celeron, 1gb ram, 60gig harddisk 17" tft. one screen one box. no kb/mouse extras.
  22. glad I could help.
  23. Have you tried changing the location where BGInfo writes its images? It is possible that you can change it to go to the profile path or maybe to the users document folder? fooby
  24. Wow Geoff You made me realise something.... id10t error i think :-/ for the longest time i have been trying to build a service that runs to make robocopy run to run a robocopy job to copy the things down - because of the network lag... however robocopy will wait patiently for the network and retry at regular intervals thus my original solution - with your assistance - will work. I have an RCJ that has the settings (similar to yours) so i think i can distribute this and voilá Excellent thanks all - will update with how it goes. fooby
  25. I'm not sure if i trust the computer startup script to correctly grab all the files :-S so i dont know if we can use those here. I have noticed on occasion that weird things can happen, like a 1 minute or so wait after the pc is switched on (and left at logon screen) before it can be used :S thanks for your input fooby
