we have had this problem loads, -insert pen drive - asks for admin -cancel - moans about not installed -ok -open word -click my computer - find pen drive listed there anyway. seems to work here

:O :O hahahahah first thing my NM did when he started was TAKE admin away from everyone apart from him, most IT teachers and such had waay too much access. SMT and the principal didnt have admin so wasnt so much a problem. See Acceptable Use Policies, and Data Protection Act. Make the users (at logon) click ok to accept your AUP then in the AUP state who has access (the NM and technical staff only will have full access to control the network, all teaching staff will have read write access to student documents (we do this here)) hopefully this will cover you.

before you do it dont do it - wise words from a teacher telling a student not to do something silly - nevermind. I tried this once with ms virtual pc - didnt work - also with normal hardware - didnt work good luck?

1. create distribution group 2. set exchange permissions in active directory to only allow certain users to access. all in active directory - easy peasy you can also create a query based distribution group (recommended) that looks at the OU your staff user accounts are held and this will automatically update as new staff join / leave based on their account existing in the OU. right click, new, distribution group or query based distribution group in active dir, if the option isnt there remote desktop to your exchange box and open AD users there. hth

it shouldnt cost £900 for just disks :-S and i wouldnt trust a "cheap cheerful" nas box as i dont trust them to scale to 600+ (the network here) users accessing them at any one time i can find disks at about £150 doing a google product search. i can also point you towards a pretty good dell reseller?

as a side-step to the issue have you tried filezilla client? its a free open source ftp client it might get around the problem hope this helps

instead of using the windows print server, add the printer to the eeepc and point it to the ip address of the jetdirect (or similar internal) ip print server, this doesnt require any authentication and should work ok. this has worked here on other linux pcs

Seriously its easy 1. Print email 2. Send to head teacher / head of year 3. Keep students in : lunch /break / after school 4. disable email access 5. send letter to parents. Just like any other incident of bullying / stupidity there will be a process to punish the student. We dont have the students here sending messages to staff that are silly - usually work and questions. the first student that sent an abusive message to a staff member was made an example of (kept in for weeks, letters home etc) None of which you will have to deal with as a techie, just provide the evidence for the teacher to present to parents / head.

I use vsftpd and webmin to manage it with the vsftpd plugin. but it can be set in the setup files for the vsftpd server. or as geoff said in the first reply, logon as www-data - we do that here too since its easier.

its possible in the proftpd settings to override the user assigned there. vsftpd does this too (which i use)
