Currently we have (too many) users accessing a startmenu hosted on 2 servers via DFS. What we need to do is get this local to each machine. Has anyone else done this? How did you do this? I propose to create an application (vb6 autoit whatever) that copies the starmenu's locally and keeps them up to date regularly. I have a few failed attempts at using robocopy to do this. I would be able to build an msi (via a capture) and release that back here for anyone to use. This was it can be deployed over AD. thanks in advance fooby also any information on how you do it (ghost package? script?) would also be very useful too

You would use a comination of filemon and regmon from sysinternals or the new process monitor from microsofts acquisiton of sysinternals. this will list all the things the process is attempting to access. after looking throught this i imagine you will be able to sort it fooby

I have a drive station quattro 2tb running as a moodle data store on my dell pe1950 centos box - works lovely - there is also one on my windows 2003 symantec backupexec box. both seem to work well fooby

Send it back and buy a DriveStation Quattro 2TB. Hang this off of a PC / Server and then create shares on the windows box. The terastation is a pretty well locked down linux box in a windows world - you sacrifice NTFS and the easyness of creating the shares and access for what? the cost of a drivestation is comparable to terastation anyways. We used to have some servers in our tech room - same reason - didnt get round to shifting them. Eventually the NM got annoyed at the stereo sound of servers and noisy kids and got rid of them (servers not kids to the rack. fooby

As the title suggests, Do you live in the same room as your servers? and how do you find it? We expanded with more people (and racks) so it was "unmanageable" hehe and got a new room. What about you? What are your experiences? I think all IT techs should not have to work in the same rooms. Time to start a Union fooby

thanks ajbritton - crisis averted. What I had done though for future reference... (back in the day) created 1st ex server - went unhappy (corrupt db it turns out) created 2nd moved db across fixed 1st, moved back and un corrupted db. took off the exchange settings migrated public stores over but left the exchange services on there (note here i didnt remove all :-S) wind forward a bit today i decide to de promote it from being an exchange server thinking that i had removed all the settings / management roles from it - turns out i hadnt. add/remove programs, remove exchange ** Phone call ** "im getting a funny message when I email out to people... undeliverable something?" oh dear check event logs and its redder than jolly saint nick (see event id's above) ... What had happened was my Routing groups settings were gone. i didnt realise this... after using terrasoft ldap explorer to drill through some AD configs i saw the settings were missing after following a path that event id was reporting as missing but didnt know what it was. Called nexus in exeter (excellent tech support) and he asked me to drill down to.. Organisation (Exchange) Administrative groups First Administrative group Routing Groups First Routing Group Connectors Outbound Mail In here there is a setting for members and it had none of my exchange servers listed. after adding both my exchange boxen all was fine again. basically i removed our exchange box that was sending mail to the world, i did not realise this. @Geoff how do you do that? I had a DFS with 3 servers with the same data on shared as \\domain\shared (and below this had \desktop for a single one desktop for many users) but from what you have written in your post you can have different folders / different servers with data in the same DFS namespace? Sorry to hijack the thread a bit :S but a link to what you might have done would be appreciated fooby

We had this before, it might be the desktop.ini problems. Delete them all (not needed really) and it sped our system up to a reasonable time (like 10 secs to list 1500 folders) fooby

Instead of using the environment variable - maybe try using just the letter? For example where you write %homeshare% write U:\ then again - if your system works already :-D fooby

@DSapseid /P - Wipe existing settings and set what the script says /G - Add to the existing settings that are already set. Please dont shout if i have these wrong - please check this before using but afaik this is whats what - as i say i use NTFSfix coz shiny GUI's win me over all the time. fooby

I have solved this one by using a 2.0TB buffalo drivestation quattro - this links via eSATA to the motherboard. 1.4 terabytes formatted for about 500 quid.

the script i have posted will give full control - there is little difference between write + modify and full control as far as i have seen. It does seem that the scripts that were first posted seem to do similar to what mine did - but the ones i used are in 2 parts and are good to use for other things. Also takeown.exe (from windows resource kits) is useful for owner things
