We looked at it but Management thought it a step too far as we were making a lot of other changes at the same time. Our plan was departmental Teams with the lead for that department as the owner. It was there then to do and organise as they please. IT could jump in if the departmental lead changed or left, but otherwise it should be self organising. SLT did want access to all Teams but I suggested that that would just add to their clutter and that they should either get documents they need to look at shared with them or just organise a central area to move things like minutes to for wider consumption. I felt this would also give greater ownership to the department as they could use it as a faculty room. This would leave Sharepoint to be a publishing area, so gatekeepers would publish documents others need access to, ie policies. It would be a massive change in work flow but I think it would have worked brilliantly. Over lockdown we setup a Curriculum team for those not furloughed and it worked really well for questions, announcements and organising documents. We also use Teams for our IT department doings, files and chat. As for backups, we currently rely on the built-in Recycle bin and versioning as we haven't had anything deleted more than 30 days ago need to be importantly restored. Currently investigating backup solutions, and looking between 2k and 4k pa depending on if we have local or offsite storage.

We get great service from @Haptic. Currently though there is a wait until mid November for Chromebooks, and we ordered end of July. YMMV depending on which you choose and it maybe a BIG shipment is coming in then so the wait isn't any longer.

We use Samsung for work phones and not had any issue with a new Ruckus install. What are the symptoms?

I've only just started myself. Got a load of bulbs from Ikea. I got an Alexa Plus so had a basic hub in that and went from there, need to get some more light switches and then I am pretty sorted for lights. I am going to setup HA at some point, need to get a mini server first though. It will run on a Raspberry Pi but not very responsive apparently. Once I have that I'm going to look at sensors, for things like doors, washing machine, light levels and movement. The biggest issue I find is that the sensors all seem to be Chinese and there is just a multitude and you can never tell what will work and what doesn't. You don't have to have theirs, you do have to have one. There are some cheaper bulbs that you connect direct to the bulb but they are generally not great and a pain to work with. You can get Wifi bulbs, so just access through a portal but they are often slower (longer round trip) and not as great an experience (personal preference) Smart things is one other hub, or you are looking at something like Home Assistant or Hass.io. Voice assistant does give you easier spontaneous control, though in the end you will probably end up using routines triggered by external inputs. It is nice to have the option to trigger with a command. I have a "Shut it down" command for when I head to bed. It turns bedroom lights on a low setting and gives me three minutes before it turns off everything downstairs. You could assign it to a button press though, have one mounted near the door or your favourite chair.

Ikea bulbs are great. You could get their hub unless you have another already. LED strips are a good option if you want to add some extra lights. I have gone for bulbs in lamps, switches for main lights, but I understand that is not an option for you. You could control the lamps by getting some smart plug adapters, but they just give bulk to the socket. Do you have an voice assistant already?

Can't remember what I used but happy to go over my settings. SmartZone controllers have to have the APs as Authorized RADIUS clients. So make sure you have both in there and that the shared secret is the same. Start with all clients enabled for ease but you can use Smoothwall groups as deciders if they get Wifi or not. The Ruckus side is pretty straight forward.

Ruckus and Smoothwall RADIUS working fine here. The only thing to bear in mind is that the Ruckus authentication test doesn't work, so you have to test with a device, not their built in test.

Only just seen this. That is odd and out of the blue!

May be off spec but we gave our PE dept a Asus CT100 Chromebook Tablet to trial, which they seem to be enjoying. Does depend on your budget and if you have any Chromebooks already. Again, depending on budget we got Galaxy Tab A (2018)s for our the EY classes to use for Tapestry and general tasks. I'm not sure if they were happier with the tablets or the different cases we got them!

Planet eStream. Not perfect but does a cracking job at filling a need, the team are great and always innovating adding new features.

@StPeters - Can you give a salary range for what is considered competitive by the school?

I always go with Synology as never had an issue. They do 4 bay rack mountable models like the RS819 or RS820 if you want some future capability. There are also options with 8 bays if you want to have some future scalability.

It is one of those things that seems easy and logical on paper and in discussions but the practice is a lot different. SIMS do a major release every term (is it still?) and often that is to edit things to the latest government decree or census needs. Hiring a software company to do that just for you would be a massive cost. Add to that would you be their top priority? If the Government release on January 3rd the requirements that are needed for the census at the end of January, are the software company going to drop everything to get that done for you, a single customer? Maybe. You would also need someone up on their software development from a management side or it will end being the usual tale of every department or member of staff wanting their own little tweaks and thinking they are the most important in the world and if they all just get shoved over to the Software company then they are going to either bump up the cost of the contract or just back out. Change that idea to an onsite development guy and it gets a bit more interesting as you could use them for other projects but you will still have the management burden and you also have the issue of if that person leaves getting someone else in and up to speed in a good time frame, thinking about those termly releases. Unless you have a very niche need I can't see how creating your own would be cost effective or compare to one of the current players who have teams of developers working full time on it. Now to your issue, not being able to agree sounds like a decision by committee. What you need to do is set out your criteria and judge each by that. Get a nice spreadsheet and get the results set out so everyone can see the top three that match your criteria closest, then take another look at those three and see which everyone is happiest with. You will probably need a core of 2-4 staff to have the final say but the result will be justified and transparent. The other issue is, these are management systems, databases, not being wowey is kind of their thing When we looked the greatest recommendation we had was someone saying "It's all right" which for a MIS is high praise indeed in my mind.

Has anyone installed the MSI ok? We are getting a profile error that looks like a permissions issue but having set full control to the path it still won't work.

You could create an IT Group and then ask staff use that to chat at. Not sure if you can create a link that would start a chat with certain people involved. Only downside would be that you will end up with many chat conversations in Teams, but that is a small niggle. You'll need to speak to a Ruckus specialist but my understanding is that ZD are EoL. If you got rid of your old APs you can certainly upgrade the ZD but you will still get to a point where you can't use any of the newer APs. So effectively there is no 'supported' fix for this and if you carry out an unsupported fix you will run into problems if you need support. I'll PM you as I may have a stop gap solution.
