Bit of a necro but SMF Systems has been mentioned at my place and I wanted to ask @synaesthesia, is that a definite that they are generic Chinese detectors? The article being passed around says they are designed in the UK, just built in China. They are damned cheap though, which worries me slightly.

I've had it before where the onscreen keyboard didn't indicate it. The only other option is if a weird keyboard mode is in operation and it thinks the P key is an arrow or something. Like some of the short keyboards, or laptop keyboards.

Try pressing every additional key multiple times, ALT, CTRL, SHIFT, Windows key. Windows just sometimes decide one of those is pressed and a good repeated tapping reminds it that the key isn't pressed.

The reason is that often the companies doing the systems are alarm companies that moved into CCTV to offer full security and now have to put alarms and cameras on networks, but have never learnt networking. They will still be fixed on single wire alarm systems. They have learnt by rote to install a network in a single configuration and will swear blind that any other configuration isn't compatible or won't work. I have had security companies tell me that CCTV doesn't work on a school network and that our IP is wrong as we weren't using 192.168.0.1 as the gateway. Find a company that does networking as well as security, not security that will do the network if they must. In a previous life the Head of Estates ended up doing installs themselves, as it isn't exactly tricky, and we just provided the networking.

Surely education should be preparing the pupils on how to learn, be resilient and to have a breadth of experience, not how to use a specific package? Skills not software as it was drummed into me. Because we have all seen the uproar when some developer moves a button from those that can't handle things not being exactly the same.

I get these now. They are fantastic. They are a box of these and get the USB version as faffing around between dual and quad pole is annoying. Replaceable pads and wires. Never seen one broken and the mic is built-in and solid.

Thanks everyone. Well unless we are on the provider that is being DDOS and they are keeping quiet about it they are now saying everything is fine. It really makes no sense. I can NSlookup reddit.com, I get two timeouts and then responses. Tracert works. Web traffic does not. We were not working on infrastructure when it stopped working, haven't been for a while. Forwarders all point to external (8.8.8.8 & 1.1.1.1) and DNS on the server NICs are set to internal servers.

But we have electronic cash already in the forms of debit and credit cards and bank transfers, and yet cash in hand is still used. A digital currency isn't going to make those that take cash in hand move. & maybe cash in hand needs to go away.

Hi all, I don't think there is anything we can do but just wanted to see if the Hive Mind has anything. We are having massive internet issues, sites inaccessible others slow, others fine. The main issue is iSAMS is affected, but it is so random what works and doesn't that it is very tricky doing anything. We have a call open with our ISP, they are saying it is a carrier issue but so far no solution. This has been an issue for 24 hours now. There seems to be no link to what is inaccessible, not the same data center or IP range that we can tell. Any thoughts? To pre-empt the inevitable, yes it probably is DNS. Certainly feels like it.

Same as everyone here, heard the news and just thought "Why". WE can move pounds around electronically. Crypto currency is meant to be non-centralised so government can't control or track it so a government sanctioned crypto seems pointless. I'm sure someone bright will come up with a good use, probably in various shades of grey or borderline legality, and everyone will wring their hands and ask how was this let happen.
