Agree, I use them for clients machines as well as at work, and they literally come with Windows 7 + MSE and that is it. I still wipe them to our image through FOG, but that is because it joins to domain etc and we only buy machines with SSDs - so its a LOT quicker to do an install. (5 mins per machine from unboxing to installing MSIs)

I started at a new place in April, 2 months before my daughter was born, so A big risk. I went from a comfy job in the same school my wife was a TA at to a network manager in a large middle school. I got given £170k to spend. I have no certs, no training. I had google and edugeek. I built a new network from scratch and doings thing I had never done before. Week before last, one lunchtime people can't save. Next minute 4 days of downtime and having to restore data from a system I had spent 22k on making redundant. Why? I pressed the snapshot button in testing, and forgot about it. I have never hated and doubted myself so much. But I fixed it. I took a step back and trusted myself. You can do the same. Good luck!

Spent £22k on virtualising a new network this summer, we have about 15 VMs (one per task), and host everything from a SAN (Which was about £13k). We have a MS HyperV Failover cluster, so two identical hosts for that. And we only have 600 students! However the fact that we can loose a whole server, loose 3 HDDs in the SAN and if one of the VMs dies we only loose the single service - its worth it imo. You can have all the power in the world and its nothing if you have no redundency. Currently arranging our second backup room to have air con and will use VEEAM to backup to our new NAS in there.

You can also use the office GPO's to control what people see on the save/open dialogues.

Glad to hear it. I switched to redirected app data the other day. Everything is redirected here now, so profiles are tiny. It halved login times to 7 seconds

Why not look to switching to redirected app data folders through folder redirection then stuff like this is not downloaded every time? Know that does not fix your actual issue though.

Hi all I have just had to rebuild our storage server from a backup. The backup doesn't carry across permissions, so I have not copied roaming profiles back, because everything is redirected there is no need. However, the only issue I have now is that no one has a wallpaper, it used to just be the default windows 7 one, as I never got round to making one - however now for everyone it is just black. Like it cant set one. I have even gone through the process of giving them one assigned via GPO, but doesn't like that either. Any ideas? Its annoying me.

Hi all A week before VEEAM gets installed and my new 4TB NAS arrives - we have a problem with our storage server hyper - V machine. Basically the snapshot (which I didnt realise was running) has grown to 1.7TB - which is the size of one of our cluster shares. This leaves us needing to manually merge the snapshot back into the drive, but we need more space then 1.7TB, which I don't have lying around - anyway a 3TB USB HDD is coming today, and the microsoft man said he is confident of getting us working, but we still will spend the day with no network whilst I move 1.7tb of data to a drive, merge it, and then move it back :/ As several other tries failed yesterday - Im starting to get even more worried. I have a backup of data, which was copied accross to an external NAS on Monday night, so at worse people loose 1 days data. We can live with that. What I am unsure about is how I go about copying this back to a new VM I have created, if I needed too. At a guess, no permissions have been copied with the files (Its just using the built in readynas backup) - so how do I go about moving all that data back with the correct permissions? Shares are fine - they have global permissions, I can just recreate them. Profiles too are fine, they can all be recreated, so can redirected AppData, start menu, desktops. Im worried about people's user areas? Also, would you recommend that I call any replacement server the same as the old server, so I don't have to change policies? Finally, the one folder that was not backed up was our programs folder from the server. Some programs were in there, including MSIs Am I right in thinking, these deployed MSIs will work fine whilst I rebuild the folder? I obviously need to work out which folders need to be reset up for programs that are run from the share... that is a PITA but I can do it. Any help gratefully recieved, hopefully the guy will be able to manually merge the files today, and all we are looking at is a couple of days downtime and no data loss. But right now I don't have faith.

I used Novatech here for our summer rebuild, spent a lot with them as well. We went for some custom build i5 all in ones with 4GB RAM and SSDs - they preimaged them for us and all have a 5 year warranty, they send us the parts NWD so very little downtime. Their tech guys are very good too. I used them to spec, buy and setup our hyperv setup, and I still get brilliant support (like today when our server went down!) even when it has nothing to do with them.

Turns out the storage server was running a snap shot. Obviously something I tried one and left, and now its a 200gb+ snap shot. Got to wait to let it merge now...

Yes, when I log onto that server, its only using about half the space available to it. None of the drives are near full. I dont know about if its set to only grow to x amount? How would I check this?

Server 2008r2 failover clusters - all VMs are 2008r2. Need your help please!! Had a server outage, found that our storage server and SIMs were both paused. I remembered this happening before when low disk space at my old place, checked and one of the cluster disks was full. I have moved one of the VHDs (SIMS) and folders to a different cluster volume, and then told it where the new VHD was. This has cleared 5.6% of space on the cluster disk 1 and moved SIMs to one of the other empty cluster disks (I have 3) Only the storage server is on Cluster Disk 1 now, but I am concerned the same is going to happen again with it running out of space, especially as it is only 50% full in real terms! I have only given it 1.5 out of 1.7tb of hdd space in total which was available to it on the cluster disk – so why would it go over? Does it reserve whatever the total allocation is to the server? Why hasn’t this happened before now?! What is the steps to enlarging the cluster disk? Do I need to go into the SAN and change the amount of space allocated? The two other clusters are 89% and 91% free!

I have had the same as this, Google Chrome, Windows 7 64 x I also get an reference not found error on initial login.

Hiscox provide it for pennies a month. Well worth it.

I use Require IT - they sell on ebay but also accept school orders. Used them for 4 years for my business with no issues.

@sted Do I need to copy them to that folder on both my DCs?
