Daily incremental - some servers have two different jobs, one at lunch, one at night, 2 weekly full backups done at the weekend to 2 different devices and then every fortnight to a fireproof safe.

All checked, and left as not contributing factors. All the servers run off one SAN as VMs, it mainly happens to PowerPoint files, regardless of size. It has never happened to non office files, and will affect as little as 2 machines. ( just read what I posted, which is what my tech sent, and didn't mention the above, sorry) I am mainly interested in why DNS would mess up like this? I have cleared the DNS/dhcp emtries before, and they have got new ones and all been fine, however it appears they go back to the issues described above.

Nothing in either any other ideas?

Hate the RAC after massive issues in France on holiday over the summer, but at least whilst out there they looked after us. I broke down last week too (the day before I ended up in plaster in hospital, but that's another story) and I happened to pull in behind a rac van, fair play to the guy, he sorted me out.

In our cluster, the dcs are the hosts, I was advised not to virtualise the dc's guess this is why. I shit myself whenever I have to restart even one of the failover cluster hosts. They have a secret way they like to be restarted, and I never get it right... Plus I transfer the vm's to one host, and have a couple of times, restarted that host instead of the empty one. Now I check it several times!!

Setup: win 2008r2 vanilla network, win 7 64x clients, office 2010 We have a strange problem at the moment. It involves multiple users accessing a shared file or folder on any of our shared drives. For example if all students try to open a powerpoint the teacher has made, powerpoint will hang for several users on downloading .....(filename)…… It is a random set of machines and users each time. It is also happening with different files and formats. So doing some testing I tried pinging out from one of the machines that had a problem and it pings out fine and has a good IP address. No packets lost <1ms etc. However if I try to ping the machine from another machine that has not had the issue we get “destination host unreachable.” I then noticed that the IP this other machine is trying to ping is incorrect. When looking into the DNS entries on the server I found that the entry in the forward lookup zone for this machine was incorrect. However the reverse lookup zone was correct. This makes me think it is related to a DNS issue where the IP addresses are not being updated. Any ideas

Hi all Urgent help needed please - when anymore then 1 user goes to open a document from a share (and it can be any share) one user opens it instantly, the rest get stuck on a downloading screen. This does eventually open the file, but it takes far too long to do so. It only appears to happen in Word, Powerpoint - a 3mb publisher file is fine, and pdfs etc are all fine. When they are waiting to download, the user also cannot then browse into the share weirdly. I can replicate this in the users my documents as well if I use impero to log a load on as the same user and get them all to open the same file. I am at a complete loss, it happens to PCs accross the network, and nothing has changed to my knowledge recently to affect this Has anyone else experienced similar? I urgently need to get this sorted Cheers Matt

Hi guys Having intermittent issues when people are accessing our pupil share. Win 7 sporadically takes an age to open a file (green address bar takes a while to load), its not specific PCs, and happens on my PC where nothing is locked down. It does not happen in user areas, which are on the same server, or staff share, although these are used less frequently. It is not for a particular file type, although only seen happening to powerpoints and word atm, have checked their size, not an issue (73kb) – in a class of 32, it can happen to 6 users. They can then reopen up computer and access it fine. The only thing I can think of is over half term I increased the disk space and shrunk some other shares for the ‘shares’ drive, it now looks like this in disk management: Any ideas? Notice that the G drive now spans 3 different areas?! I am thinking about creating a new VHD, and moving it onto that?

i7 3770, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD here. With a nice set of dual 24" LED screens.

I use VEEAM to do a nightly backup of all our servers, our MIS and Bio servers are done twice a day, all to a NAS in another physical building. I do a fortnightly backup into a fire safe and a weekly back up to a separate NAS located in a 3rd building. I am looking to hold an offsite backup at one of the primaries we support as well in the near future. With us, Im hoping its more a case of differences in age of backups, then loosing the backups. All out NAS's have ISCSI - so we could run the VMs straight off there, but likely hood is I would shift them to a new server. Our current setup is a failover cluster with a SAN, so one would hope only a major instance would bring it down...

If he doesnt pay I say we all phone him on your behalf, and see how stressed he becomes then.

You need to speak to a solicitor, small claims will just get you back what you spent, you want compensation for the distress and upset caused by his negligence. I'd speak to one quickly, and ensure you mention you might be able to recover the photos off the HDD, I wonder if they can put an injunction in to keep it safe till it gets to court. As has been mentioned, house insurance or wedding insurance should cough up for one. Hope you get it sorted buddy. Matt

Trying to expand space in our storage servers for shares, installing smoothwall and trying to get down to 0 tickets after a manic first half term.

I got to plan and get built our offices, my key considerations was storage, repair area, privacy for screens and storage again!

Probably a job for next summer.
