They havent logged in for 6+ months but I would like to know too. My main concern with HWB is the lack of control - I can't even rename an organisational unit in google let alone do anything actually useful. What control do we have about data protection/data retention / backups / etc / etc We are fed up here of having 5 different accounts so moving entirely to HWB could be beneficial.

The problem with moving back to on prem is that ESS are then going to force all on prem users to move to the cloud too. I can see it coming a mile off. So it's delaying the inevitable which may be a goer if you hope the delay is going to end up being years not months?

After 23 years of doing this - I don't think I've ever met a good cashless catering company. They all appear to be trying to extract the maximum amount of money out of the shoddiest software and hardware around.

Exactly why I run desktops! Don't want lessons being wasted like that!

Still beats spending 10 mins fiddling with USB and HDMI cables! Print 30 worksheets? What is this the 80s? Open google classroom job done. In 90+% of lessons the teacher is already in there already logged in so your point is not really ever an issue here. Anyhoo

TBH since I moved to eaton I've never looked back - much better UPS with better battery life - my main 5kw ups's are 5+ years old and are still giving an hour uptime each so it looks like they're going to make 8 years on the original batteries. All the old APC UPS's I had over the last couple of decades tended to end up shafting their batteries after after 3 years.

I would never get rid of our teacher desktops in classrooms here - I've seen to many schools go the laptop route and a) spend more money b) get a FAR less reliable system overall and c) spend all day troubleshooting things not being plugged in right and sometimes even d) regret it so much they buy desktops all over again So Yeh - PC in classroom permanently plugged into all audio video equipment = teacher sits down and 60 seconds later they're teaching, every single classroom, every single day, no need to call IT support. We have given them Chromebooks to do work away from the class and this is working nicely as lets face facts domain joined windows laptops are pretty horrific user experience when taken home. I agree that it is our duty as a school to help staff work in the best way that suits their life etc and if that means providing mobile devices so they can leave at 3pm and work 7-11 pm then so be it. A draconian approach to home working is very "90s"

I guess it's a lesson to the powers that be that when edugeek says no don't use something as it's rubbish -they should listen! Papercut for me is one of those handful of systems that is nearly flawless - when I ask myself how can it be improved I can't really think of much. There's hardly any other software like that - Veaam may be another one that just works brilliantly and you can't get better really.

I went again with 2 x OS SSD in raid 1 with win installed and then X SSD in Raid 5 or X HDD in Raid 6 for data. This has proven over the last 20 years to be solidly reliable, very fast and extremely cost effective. We never ever had the budget for £50k cluster SAN systems anyway - but frankly from what I've seen, the more complexity you inject into storage systems to gain scalability, the slower and less reliable it becomes, or you can keep the speed and reliability but it becomes exorbitantly expensive. Always wanted to move to something like Vmware Vsan when that first came out but the licenses were horrific and Storage spaces (a few years ago) looked a bit of an unreliable mess. Not sure what I'll do for the next server refresh.

Is this 1:1 or shared carts? If shared then "no accounts" is gonna turn messy real quick as everyone will be signed in to everyone else email/google/etc and if you mix teachers into the ipad usage too you'll end up with a guaranteed data breech at some point. If you think telling the pupils to "make sure you log out of google" is going to work then I am afraid your in for a shock. We moved from ipads to chromebooks for the pupils and haven't looked back. Open Chromebook - login - learn all within 120 seconds. 5 lessons a day every day.

The best solution is not to use ipads are they are terrible at multi-user and making sure people are logged out. So much so that we completely stopped using them as shared devices as the chances of data breech type issues were too high. Chromebooks on the other hand work perfectly, user signs in, gets their stuff, next user signs in, they get their stuff, all encrypted and no chance of cross contamination.

No we just use the Deploy Tool then add in our IP ranges and push it out that way. You must select a configuration file, we have two config files one for teachers one for pupils. Yes it is poorly laid out and a bit backward in terms of usability.

You sure? We've had pcs running out of space with the GPO method applied and have been above 1909 for a long time?

You should be able to run a dumb switch as long as whatever VLAN on the uplink port you want the new switch to run on is set as "Untagged" or "Native" with no other Vlans Tagged. It's when you start tagging multiple vlans onto the uplink port that dumb(er) switches get confused.

I won't be going now because of all this data harvesting and making it literally difficult just to turn up walk around and have a chat to some vendors.

Anyone got any more news on Doddle website still seems to be down etc? I guess it's dead software now?

With the standard windows tools, diskpart etc - you can not extend a partition if it has another partition on same logical drive i.e. your E drive. You would need to use some third party software for that partitionmagic or something (no idea if that even exists). Thats why I only allow one partition per logical drive as you can always extend them in the future. If I need a D or E drive I create a new disk in HyperV etc and then create one single partition on that disk. (rather than using the free space on an existing virtual drive).

Been there done that - bend the chassis back carefully, clip/glue everything else in - hey presto working again. We don't buy metal chassis'd chromebooks any more as they have been ultra problematic with regards to bending and snapping screen hinges. Plastic with robber edges for the win!

I've signed up for a 30 day demo and am logged in now it looks very comprehensive. Gonna try using it as my helpdesk for the next couple of weeks (don't want to go to the bit where they give me a quote though...)

Decent spec. Might be worth trying egotechnology.co.uk as they bought all our old switches and severs and gave us a frankly reasonable price for them came and collected them zero hassle for us.
