There are various tools to scan the network for anything with an IP address, we also use Spiceworks as a helpdesk system, that does have an inventry system built in and won't cost you anything, but not quite user friendly enough for an Asset Manager Solution...

It was always done on a spreadsheet here, with labels printed ourselves, but has never been ideal for various reasons... We're just trialling School Asset Manager at the moment, after looking into a few options to cover everything needed, we finally decided to invest in a proper solution with support... It's a lot cheaper than it used to be, and is really easy to set up and use...

Probably, but people just saying how many there are of us doesn't mean much if you don't say what you've got to look after... It's all relative lol :-p

Let us know what numbers of servers/workstations/users your looking after too... I'm currently thinking of arguments for a 2nd technician as things are mounting up... There's just two of us here... We've got 15 servers, about 400 PCs/Laptops, 60ish iPads, 1100 users...

We've recently had ours redesigned - CMT Tech | Web and IT Services | Leyland, Chorley, Preston, Blackburn did it - one of the lads is an ex-pupil, prices vary per job obviously, but ours was £700... Time scale was reasonable, and they've been helpful with tweaks etc. since.

I've been using the Surface RT for about 9 months now, and still absolutely loving it... I'll definitely be looking to upgrade to the Surface RT 2 when it's released... I've thought about the Pro model, but the main things I use it for are standard web browsing, and little general things at work - command prompt etc. the rest I access via RDP, which works perfectly... I'm glad they're not ditching RT just yet!

I'm happy to talk about my experience moving away from OCL if anyone wants to PM me - it looks like we were lucky moving when we did last year, but if what people are saying is true, and that this years prices have been capped with a 50%+ increase, it looks like now's the time to be getting away from them before they remove the cap next year... There's a lot to consider, but we've had no regrets...

That's probably the way these will work, as we're probably going to continue taking it in turns to host it, the host NM can take that opportunity to do as you said...

We went with Virtue Technologies, as we've worked closely with them for quite a while on other aspects of the network/upgrades etc. but have stayed with The W.C. for SIMS Support, mainly because we missed the deadline for giving notice... We'll be looking at alternatives before the renewal date comes, there are two options I'm thinking of at the moment, one is a company through Virtue, the other will be directly with Capita...

A few of the Network Managers have started hosting our own meetings, since County / CLEO / OCL stopped them, and with more and more schools moving away from OCL for their services, it makes more sense to start organising them ourselves... It's a great chance to catch up, meet other NM's, and have a rant about OCL if you're still with them... The next meeting has been arranged for Monday 13th of May at Bishop Rawstorne CE Academy, Croston, 1000-1300. Lunch provided. Hiya, If you're recording a live audio stream, I'd recommend Audacity or Audition if you wanted to use something more Professional... Depending on the soundcard in your PC, it will either record "WhatUHear" or you may have to record on a separate PC... either way I'd recommend one of those two... As for recording chart music, there are definite licensing issues you're not going to get around, regardless of any PRS etc. licenses you've already got for broadcasting the music internally... there's plenty of Royalty Free music, but it's all boring and isn't likely to interest the pupils in the slightest... I'd recommend you edit the recordings, removing the music, just leaving the links / talking in...

Resolved... Daftly... Kicking myself now... The students have a redirected Start Menu, I was trying the shortcut from a network area before I put it in their Start Menu...

It's Windows 7 64bit, but the default installation directory for Python is C:\Python32 if you look at the shortcut though, the target's not the exe or anything, and creating a shortcut directly to the exe doesn't work either...

Nope, not for Python... it was working previously, and I've not changed any GPOs or settings... The only difference is that they're 64 bit machines now, but that shouldn't be an issue because it's working for staff... Very odd, and the lead ICT Teacher's tearing her hair out, desperate to get using it again...

Just bumping this - I put it in with other Python posts, but should have really put it in Educational Software... Still no further on if anyone's got any suggestions...

Mornin' All! We've had Python installed for a while, but not used since we replaced the PCs over summer, now the students can't access the GUI, but staff/admins can... I've tinkered with the permissions on the C:\Python32 folder and even tried (temporarily) giving pupils full access to it, but still no joy... I didn't do anything differently last time, just a standard install, so not sure what's gone wrong now... Can anyone point me in the right direction?
