I think it is a sign of a deeper issue, most of these people would not be messing with their phones if the vendors did a half decent job of making them let alone supporting them. To put it nicely a large percentage of the products ship as barely polished excrement with the promise of future updates to maybe make it work. Problem is that now their are active communities that fix these abominations the vendors do even less. People are left with the option of suffering with the junk or doing what the rest of the internet is doing. Unfourtunatly this seems to be forcing many more people to do the in thing including those not suited to it. If the devices weren't junk to start with bundled with vendor filth then this would not be such a big and growing problem.

Just brought an ASUS Smart VIVO tab - it was really cheap - and it seems that ASUS's software ineptitude goes beyond the Android world. Out of the box it ran dog slow and after three hours of updates it finally started to run at the expected speed. Yay, but no. Get into metro land and the marketplace would not download anything, stuck them all at pending. Turns out ASUS's crumby image seems to have a corrupted update in it from the factory and you need to kill the Windows Update service, the windows store service and then the c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution folder to get it running again. Companies like ASUS are the reason MS had to make the Surface. I know I never learn, I thought it would be slightly better than the Nexus 7 As a side note, others like the hp one are much better behaved, just at three times what I paid for the ASUS.

Perfectly possible, you may need to rewrite it using newer languages and if you want to distribute it outside your AD managed environment you may need a dev account to publish it which is like $99 per year or so.

That method is also known as overkill unless you are dealing with tens of thousands of users, I'd compress the roles further like putting VPN and firewall/edge on the same server. I'd also concatenate the web application servers a bit like helpdesk and intranet etc. You could easily be investing hundreds of hours more unnecessarily over the lifetime of the setup.

You can do that with STP also and get rid of the protocol overhead but as always the best solution depends on the requirements.

Wow, that is a massive number of servers for that number of clients, must be an interesting set of software you run there. As to the SAN it depends on how heavy the software is and how many servers you intend to run if across, a SAN could be your best option, have not heard of a VSA? Yes, on metro on occasion, that editor is dodgey as hell through and I thought that the default had been changed for IE to the slightly saner one. I have had that editor choke out on firefox and chrome in different situations. Just switch it to the text mode one which is many times more reliable and quicker.

Not sure from a GPO view but fro personal use it is fine, quicker and has some cool features when used in touch mode.

The new atom stuff is not that bad and is much better under windows 8, pricewise I think the atom stuff is around the same area as a 64gb iPad. However with keyboard case, and the same adapter dongles to be comparable with the w8 stuff the iPad would cost more. Prices probably differ there though.

Most of the benifits with few of the drawbacks, yes it is slower but it is not meant to replace a laptop, it is a comanion device like an iPad but more expandable and a much fairer comparison. Your not goint to use an iPad as a laptop replacement unless your work is answering emails and watching youtube. RT is for battery life and small size, still more capable than an ipad IMO but less useful than an x86 one for compatibility, it is the direct competition for the ipad, same architecture, size, battery life etc. It still has a better RDP app on it for free than anything I have seen in iOS.

You can just use AD group policy to install properly packaged software, we do that here and it does a good job, you also have SCCM http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/server-cloud/system-center/configuration-manager-2012.aspx which can automate practaclly everything but is huge or wpkg http://wpkg.org/.

Oh I'm sure it would finish in April if I started right now... either 2014 or 2015
