I think the optional keyboard (you only need one) has lan built in which probably supports pxe. wds, mdt and remastered windows disks should all be able to boot fine, I think 7 supported efi but as a tablet 8 is better by a big margin. Oh and try dart from MS for password reset, I think the new one is based on 8 so efi compliant.

Easy enough to make a small device do this, doing it with a cable teather is a whole other matter. Special cable and/or connector would be required to prevent leakage.

Yes, the hardware is faster and the EFI boot lets you take advantage of that, the BIOS is what added that extra time. Oh and again, you can't blame the technology if the vendor can't implement it properly, besides, AGAIN, as a server it has a different set of requirements from EFI. Speed may not be their primary concern, perhaps they are running a bunch more checks at startup so that your server is more likely to run happily without issue for x months or years between full power downs.

I have seen and have had to clean up soooo many 'installation' jobs from electricians it is insane, miswires, bare crimps in puddles under buildings, wires stripped and untwisted 15cm before the punchdown, cat6 terminated into cat5 points and mislabled, cables hanging out of walls unterminated. Eeeep, you may be the exception but all the horror shows of cabling I have encountered have been perpetrated by electricians. We had to rewire a whole block because of such standards, even a stable link was a stretch.

What is an HS22, we buy EliteBooks that have worked really well with UEFI for a long time because the vendor could program their way out of a paperbag unlike certain others... Google Nexus7, Samsung, HTC etc. Wait, looked it up, it's a server blade which you of course need to boot in seconds several times a day . Even with a BIOS server gear takes longer thanks to all the extra tech and more robust checks that it does. Your making unfair comparisons again.

Using MDT? Have you tried just dumping all the drivers into the repository, if they work it should install them. I think you can also provide a driver searchpath in the WDS sysprep stuff that you could point to a network share.

There are 'ways' of recovering an XP key, leagaly grey but investigatable, you know, if it is a retail copy that the COA has become unreadable on. I think the UBCD for windows tool has some of these.

@SPM - angling for a job there? HTML5 may have fixed some of the issues but it is still not the only solution, if security was everything then everyone would be running BSD on extensively tested hardware. As to just as efficient, that is also debatable, I don't care what you say that interpreting layer still adds overhead, even if it is only once or more likely every time to keep the whole JS JIT alive.

It's weird, the W501p was trivial to get running on 8, even a PXE bootable NIC on the detachable keyboard I think. I just installed it from a USB DVD though and could have booted MDT the same way to apply an image, probably even with EFI native.

You did have plasmid traps in BS2. Am enjoying it so far, great and heavy story that does not shy away from discomfort. Better weapon combat, you can use all those COD skills thanks to the more open setting. I have to say I found the noise of Elisabeth's footsteps annoying at first but she is sooooo useful in game. I am playing on normal and have got up to a point I am struggling with that involves songbird. A couple of things, I had to look up how to change viguors in game as I had forgotten: long hold on the vigour change button. The other thing is that 30 is the maximum number of lock picks you can carry but it does not tell you, this becomes really frustraiting because Elizabeth is telling you about a lockpick you should pickup but they no longer glow so you can't. So far I think I have found and opened every safe and door but I know I missed on two that I could not get to near the syphon. All and all a great game, sufferes a little thanks to the dated engine but still great. If they had made this a 720 launch title I would have brought one. Edit: Oh and be sure to try the vigour combos, murder of burning crows is rather destructive.

UEFI makes booting much quicker and more reliable (easier to diagnose faults) and secure boot does help prevent rootkits which are nasty and effect everything along with being stupidly difficult to detect and root out with virtualisation on. This is a step towards actually combating that and I would think that people would be happy with the faster boots and more secure end result. As to Linus, Wahhhh, waaahhhhhh, wahhhh. There is nothing stoping the individual distributions going to the motherbard vendors and getting certs and signing to implement this it is just that there are eleventymillion distributions and plenty of vendors so the overhead would be a nightmare. MS has offered (as the one pushing newer tech and better security to this hardware) to act as an intermediary so that linux can share in the benifits. For this they get wined at by the qunitisential angryman. If you don't like it don't use secureboot and be more vunrable to rootkits and add an extra few seconds to every boot. If the hardware does not support it (no secureboot off) then don't buy that hardware. Not every bit of hardware has to boot linux with full compatibility unless they are willing to do the work to make it work. Where is Linus's monologue on intel's new BGA chips, those are probably more of a threat to the universality of certain software, the new atom chips actually said something about not supporting linux too. EFI is better, it is not new either, Intel made it around a decade ago and apple has been using it for years. It has taken MS fully supporting it to push it into everything and get the vendors to move on. This is the same as SATA and all the wineing that went on about having to switch it off to use old stuff with the new tech without installing the propper drivers. If you want to use the new stuff work with a platform that can actually support it, If you have to jump through a few hoops to make it work that is because your platform of choice does not support it propperly. You choose the platform and so having to do the extra fighiting is your choice to degrade the technology.

Interesting, we can't even get it till tomorrow. I do love it on the Xbox though, big screen TV and full surround from the home theatre in the dark, it does add to the atmosphere, well it did in the ones set in Rapture, this one looks like it is a much more open brighter environment so it may not add as much as it did in the other games. Still nothing better than something like the songbird scream sounding out at plentyfive watts behind you in the darkness

No beta, would have been good, preordered from here Buy BioShock Infinite for Xbox 360 at Mighty Ape NZ and around NZD $ 85 which is not bad for a game here, they can get above $130.

That style of control panel is available in W8 to but there were still little bits missing which this has added, I'm sure that like 8 the legacy control panel will still be around with all the settings available. I'm hopeing they make the metro start screen resizable.

My preordered copy should be showing up tomorrow, long live Columbia It should be epic as it has been done by the original Bioshock Team which should make it good. The videos and previews look good and since I refused to buy Deadspace 3 thanks to its mobile game micropayment rubbish it has been a while since I bothered to get a new game. Anyone else waiting on this game?

It could be hardware and checking that first is a good start and means you start with a good platform. If you have recovery disks and can back up the whole user profile/docs a recovery plus restore and reinstall of whatever required software is probably the quickest way to a fresh system assuming it passes hardware tests and you can't just warrenty it.

Make a bootable CD of memtest86+ Memtest86 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia and give that a crack to test the RAM, boot with a live CD and recover the data to a different drive then run a full scandisk and vendor utility scan on the HD (ie seatools for Seagate). AMD stuff could be anything, I know that many vendors messed originally with Vista when the images with a Universal image that had intel drivers in it which were not sanitised out, this worked fine till SP1 which showed up the fault and wrecked all the installs in those batches. Depending on the computer something similar could have happened. A repair install after all the above steps is probably the best bet (in the case of Vista+ I think this is referred to as an inplace upgrade even if there is not version change).
