Well without any special switch involvement you can use something like Wireshark Wireshark · Go Deep. or MS Network Moniter Download Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 from Official Microsoft Download Center which will let you snoop on the broadcasts. In order to do this for specific links like your internet one you would need to set up the switch to mirror the port (can slow the switch down) to your sniffer or put in a hub between the switch and your target then connect your sniffer to that (not recommended as it will slow stuff down). You can also look at using network monitering stuff like theDude to moniter port and cpu usage on your switches MikroTik Routers and Wireless: The Dude assuming they support snmp. Be aware that traffic snooping like this can be very invasive when monitering an internet link so you may need permission as you could easily come across unencrypted passwords for websites etc. The biggest thing that VLANs would help with is broadcast traffic so I'd start with wireshark on a standard network interface and see how much broadcast traffic there is flying about. GPU, had the same kind of issue on an asus tablet till they spat out WDDM 1.3 drivers for it. It could be that the card or the drivers are not snaping to quick enough as W8 uses gpu acceleration for everything metro. Can you try it with a different GPU temporarily?

Gargh - trying to get MDT 2013 up and running and ran across this dropkick pack of software. Not only is it something like 5.6GB but it seems MS are hosting it on a pack of recycled netburst P4's in the middle of a desert somewhere over a 56k modem. I have been trying to download it for three days now over various connections including a 100MBIT fibre and its lovely almost feedbackless downloader app keeps failing out silently and failing to resume. Why oh why can't they just release an ISO if their servers and/or developers are not up to making an install pack.

No, MS is lazy. When thy brought out PS they said they would still provide support for GUI tools then promptly did everything is PS and tacked on a few slow hack gui shells on top. I still prefer Exchange 2003 as once they went PS it became slow and cumbersome to actually use in comparison. MS has stopped developing the configuration layer, you are now expected to develop it yourself every single time which explains o365 sharepoint when it comes to education also. The collaboration is possible in house with sharepoint and office, there is no special magic in GAPS just a special koolaid effect in many schools. It does do the job easily meaning the techs and schools simply have to know less and as a benifit have to pay them less and buy less server gear to support it all. Both are valid solutions depending on how the school wants to handle things.
