Right, has anyone managed to find exactly the right components and orientation of stars and planets MS wants to actually use this. Tried following their instructions to install the Windows Azure Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell and the desktop tools for the signon bit only to have it claim I had the wrong version, six reinstalls later with different versions scattered around MS I gave up and used a reg hack to fake the version number so the damn thing would install. Now when trying t connect it gives me this lovely informtive error: The internet is even less informative. How much more of a pain could they make it, I long for a simple exchange/sharepoint/lync on premise server that you can at least log in to and seemingly takes less time to setup. Anyone got any ideas on this? @EduTech

Hmm, must have been a special card I was dealing with, As it happens the user does want one DVI output mirrored onto HDMI but with audio etc. so that cold be interesting. I guess I'll keep playing with adaptors to find out what AMD are on about with 6 monitors, they probably mean 2 monitors duplicated three times with y adaptors

You need a lot of expensive man hours on autotune to make that even remotely bareable.

Stupid question on my part but for once my search engine skills are failing. Have a AMD R9 270 which I am sure the docs says support up to six monitors but only two work at a time. It probably requires an active display port connector for at least one but this setup is two dvi and one HDMI. I am thinking that because of the clocking signal it will need a DVI-D dual link to two DVI-D single link adaptor. I have seen this product before but can't seem to find it with search terms. Surely three monitors should not be this difficult and displayport monitors should not merit a 1/3d increase in price. Any help in sorting an easy solution greatly appreciated, I don't want to be recommending active displayport adaptors at $100+ if I don't have to.

So we meet again... And you complain about other people talking rubbish, you can manage Windows 8 stuff perfectly fine with a 2008 backend, probably even a 2003 one with the RSAT tools. You loose a few of the nice to have features like AD KMS and password policies but they whole point of Windows server is that it is extensible, you don't need to be running the very latest to work with new devices. The new hybrid tablets that are keyboard dockable and have the latest quad core atoms are quite capable and give you longer battery, lighter weight and all that compatibility and management in my opinion. Why buy a tablet trolley when you can buy a tablet/laptop trolley for a little bit more with a stack more compatibility with everything and very little lock in in comparison. Lots of places like flash, and chrome, and other things all of which can be added in. Here we go, actual unbiased sense, that's what I like to see. This bit I agree with entirely, get the right devices for what you are actually going to use them for and make sure they work before you are buried under a pile of whatever solution the vendor/sales drone promised would work. You should never start out with a technology in mind, start with a goal and then list what you need to accomplish that goal then find the devices that best suite your requirements.

Try reinstalling it Multipoint is unstable as hell on lots of hardware with direct attach screens and you may want to take some time to read more about it.

You are right. I was abrasive in responce which was not helpful but my point is still valid. If we can both keep it a tad more civil then it will be better for everyone.

One single environment is not empirical, more like anecdotal but anyhow in your environment and probably many you may be right however without a study across several hundred with it all configured 'properly' as per you the actual definitive specs for defining every case are lost somewhere in unfounded statistics. Greif, more unfounded, unspecific generalisations. If you have mandatory profiles and well setup gpos on newish pcs they can log in plenty fast. Or if you have older macs they can take some time (hello forced obselesence with 10.released after your mac). If you are not careful you are going to need a new axe after you grind clean through this one.

If you have volume you should be using enterprise anyway otherwise you ill be n a world of hurt later when you try to manage suff like the start screen which you can't do with pro, only enterprise. Bitlocker is also only on Enterprise I think.

Short answer, yes, it uses the hub to determine which devices belong to which station so you want all the hardware for each screen on its own hub ie, mouse keyboard and soundcard all on one hub to the OS knows its a set.

You can manage the start screen now by exporting and enforcing an XML layout. There are more GPO options that handle most things like all new versions of Windows. They still have not sorted out the metro store for management yet though. It is faster at everything though which is why some people are deploying it.

Only in the new versions, the old ones had those issues and none of the benefits. That kind of space management is fine as long as there is always someone around to check, an email is good but a once a week tech may not be able to manage things so closely. It also depends on the subscription o your hadware. I have seen schenarios where thereis only 300GB to go around on the drives with no money to update so tight management and control was required. There are resons why such things can be required and I had not read up on that particular bit since Hyperv 2k8.

Ah, yes I have been guilty of using expanding VHDs on occasion but it is TERRIBLE practice, if the drives grow too big for the drive you can bring down all the vms on that volume and end up in a nasty, possibly server loosing condition where they are all paused because of disk space and you have nothing to delete so can't unpause them to shut them down. The other thing is speed, dynamic/expanding VHDs are shockingly slow in comparison to everything. Static VHDs re very close to as quick as native. EDIT: looked it up, still slower but they fixed much of the horror in 2k8R2 for dynamic speed Hyper-V pass-through disk performance vs. fixed size VHD files and dynamic VHD files in Windows Server 2008 R2 | Clustering For Mere Mortals Still static is better practice, I would at the least have a nice big place holder file or two like a couple of ISOs on the drive with the dynamic VHDs so you have something to delete to allow a hasty shutdown and move incase one server goes off into the weeds with storage.

Maybe the paper detection sensors are dirty, look for a tear down of the printer or a service manual online and have a good check of all the sensors.

@localzuk - possibly dumb question time, why would it increase your disk usage, we use all basic disks to? I'm assuming you mean partition type rather than static (preallocated) or expanding VHDs/VHDX/VMDKs?
