It all depends on the model you get, anything with Compaq in the name means trouble, like all brands they have some stinkers. The huge thing I like about HP is their support, for instance drivers, we have had machines 7 years old I could still easily get drivers for with later versions of Windows unlike Toshiba, Fujitsu or Lenovo where even finding the drivers for the version of windows it came with is an epic journey rivalling the journey to mordor. Tech level is also something nice, HP has real efi, a new Toshiba I had to deal with a month ago still had an actual bios and a stack of other out-dated hardware in it. HP stuff is generally engineered rather than thrown together from rebranded parts like some other vendors. In conclusion, as with anything, pick a solid looking one from the line and you should be good. I only suggested the envy line as they are reasonably well put together and pretty. If you want something robust the elitebooks are solid and the probooks are ok if you need to bring the cost down.

Printer drivers are the devil, make sure you have the latest as bad drivers will kill the spooler all the time, use generics if you have to and can get away with it, this is where I actually liked the HP universal ones as they were stable - Minolta are the opposite btw. Old drivers also can try installing as type one non-isolatable ones too where as the newer ones are usually at least type three. Schedule a task if you have to cycle the spooler every hour or so - you'll need to kill then restart papercut services first in the task otherwise it won't work. We had to do this for six months thanks to leaking memory from Brother drivers. Also look at removing old or uneeded drivers from the server because despite the fact they are supposed to be separate they can interfere with each other - Ricoh drivers had this habit.

It's called Dlna, the ps4 does not have it and the Xbox one specs information so far has not said either way. I would imagine the Xbox one should have it as it does help link all their devices like their pcs and phones, they have more to gain by keeping it in, Windows 8 has a windows certification for dlna sharing so while it is still possible that it may not have it, it is likely that it does but as far as I know there is no definitive answer yet.

Haven't used the synology stuff but the qnap stuff has done alright for me, got a six bay one and it supports apps like video surveillance, ties into ad for authentication and supports speedy iscsi so has not irritated me which says a lot for it given my short fuse with backup devices. Does not handle extended ntfs stuff on the nas side so you can't run windows backup to it directly bit chick it on iscsi and make it a real ntfs volume, all those issues go away.

Qnap is decent, put the ftp volume on a raid set and you'll be fine.

Done this a stack load, there is even a caddy that will emulate a blueray or DVD or fed as well as a drive which works great with these, they are a bit touchy with Seagate drives but are really useful.

Relatedly, do you buy systems then pull the drives for externally sourced ssds often, we may have to look into that thanks to the 200+ dollar extra for ssds from reasonable brand hardware suppliers.

Have you considered using a Windows or Linux server that has this built in to map the space then sharing it off that via nfs or cifs.
