If they moved to Postgres or MySQL this wouldn't be a problem.

I'm in a similar situation as Sarconia, it takes about 10 mins to walk to work, so almost pointless cycling to work for that short distance. Plus I don't have a bike. The other places I travel to are too far away for cycling or very costly and inefficient using public transport.

webman replied to enjay's topic in EduGeek.net Site Problems
You can turn off displaying signatures here under Thread Display Options. This has been a god-send with the latest mega-large images some people are using -

Nice layout & design, and good use of Wordpress. One issue though - when browsing using Opera, the drop-down menus disappear quickly - particularly on the home page. OK in Chrome/IE7. Demonstration video. Also On Parents > Canteen, I tried to download the menu, but it redirects me to an internal address of 10.121.83.80:50000.

If there were ever a reason for not a) buying DRM media and b) buying into a vendor lock-in system; this is it. Ridiculous.

The truth hurts?

@JoshJohnson: Obviously with Android having a close tie with Google, if you use Google stuff (this includes Maps), then it's all seamless. Google Maps does work great on Android phones, as long as you have a data connection.

Correct. Twitter / Phil Jackman: big decision with DJ, roll ...

Internet Explorer Settings Via Group Policy: Not Working
webman replied to 6Foot2's topic in How do you do....it?
I think we tracked down our problem with log files/event viewer - things to look out for could be to do with branding. Might be worth checking in IE's Program Files folder or %appdata% etc for IE-related log files. Also search user profile folders for .ins files. -
Internet Explorer Settings Via Group Policy: Not Working
webman replied to 6Foot2's topic in How do you do....it?
Which settings in particular? Is it consistently the same settings across all machines? We had an issue where the proxy settings appeared not to be applying, but it was actually bogus first-install .ins files over-writing applied GPOs. -
Wireless printing? No driver issues?

Then don't use them It's not really a matter of opinion when they say exactly what they do with what data in their own privacy policy - it's there in black & white. But which search engine would you use? Yahoo does it. Bing does it. Ask does it. EduGeek.net doesn't even have a privacy policy link that I can find; who knows what they're doing with our data?* * Just for agument's sake. I fully trust EduGeek.net with whatever data they have about me.
-
How are they misusing data? It's right there in their privacy policy what data they use and what for. My personal opinion on Google and privacy issues, is that paranoia has a lot to do with it.

@John: Nope, just one notification after the other as it gradually recognised them coming back online Monit sends email to an email-to-Twitter gateway, we follow that Twitter user, and subscribe to it's updates via SMS. This was before we got fancy smartphones which are email-capable though, so this may change soon
-
We use Monit. Through the magic of email, Twitter and SMS; we get failure notices on our mobiles. Monit

The Train That Does Not Stop At Stations: A Chinese Innovation
webman replied to 6Foot2's topic in General Chat
It's a great idea. It would just mean altering every existing train station and their platforms. I would imagine bridges would also have to be considered. -
From my understanding, connections aren't disconnected at the drop of a hat - technical measures (e.g. disconnecting someone) are a last resort, after numerous letters have been sent to the owner of said connection informing them an alleged copyright infringement has taken place. I watched the debate in the House of Commons with great interest, and only a handful of MPs showed any sign of understanding of the issues at hand (Tom Watson and Austin Mitchell). It has been rushed through without it being understood or its finer implications investigated; yet nearly 200 MPs agreed with its passing. It's disgraceful, when one of the MPs, Stephen Timms, thinks IP address means 'Intellectual Property' - http://i.imgur.com/1pXlO.jpg
