  1. @torledo Thank you. Yes the old one was based on Andreas02 if I remember rightly. There's never been anything Joomla-esque about any of my sites because I detest it with a passion It was feeling old and the site was beginning to out-grow the initial structure, so something was done. @speckytecky That's never been brought up as an issue here with the SLT or Governors, and our security is fairly high.
  2. The image itself - Visio. Interactivity on the site is mix of CSS (for the tooltips) and Javascript (photo lightbox).
  3. Re-image/re-install the OS?
  4. chris_uk: I don't think any of those problems was the primary issue. The main one I see is that it was a Clio Everyone Clio owner I know has commented on how they wish they'd never got one.
  5. @mrbios We have a small pool of spare machines which we can just swap out in around 5 minutes. Depending on the failure, we either have the failed component sent to us via next day courier or the supplier send an engineer. Because everything is all standard hardware (no proprietary Dell motherboards/PSUs ) in our workstations, we have the option of supporting it ourselves once out of warranty if we feel a machine is still up to the job.
  6. tmcd35 makes a very good point - what is your total cost of ownership for the lifetime of each of those DIY computers? Pre-built: initial unit cost, warranty usually included, and you don't have to worry about it yourself. Sometimes includes Windows licenses. None of your time (which costs money) is taken getting it to a working state. DIY: initial component cost. Warranties on parts - a year? Windows license may be bought as OEM? Your time is taken up when building (up to 30 mins per machine?), and also further on down the line when you are required to carry out repairs yourself. If you leave, who is responsible?
  7. @bossman: Don't forget to mention the 5 year on-site warranty
  8. Yes - that link shouldn't be there. You set the dates when you add/edit a week.
  9. @timbo343: Sorry for not replying sooner, I hadn't noticed an update to this thread. Re: v2. AD/LDAP integration for definite. Other things such as reports, quota features are also planned. The main drive has been to work on the permissions part to allow further control of groups/departments for the booking of rooms. Bigger list of stuff here. Due: some time this year On that note, if anyone can invent a device which allows me to pause time, I'd be very grateful. @Gibbo: Thanks for filling in for that @chrisjako: Simple answer: you can't. Long answer: You should be able to do this in v2. @sudathkg: What ever you set them as during the installation.
  10. The transformation has been amazing over the last ten years. For example, our website circa 1999 found in the backups Back then, the sole network printer was an HP laserjet III connected via parallel port to a switch, which was then connected by more, extremely long parallel cables to each of the 20-or-so computers in the room. Those computers, of course, were still running Windows 95 at the time. An Iomega Zip drive and several Zip Disks was the backup strategy, and each student would save their work on a named floppy disk. I remember this well because I was one of those students I'll turn my nostalgia mode off now.
  11. Yes, I understand that - even so, that may have been what the teacher wanted them to do. To make the kids be quiet, to give the teacher time to do marking/planning, book their holiday or fall asleep. But if we were to react in some way to that specific lesson and prevent the kids doing what ever they were - I'm guessing a high percentage would take it personally.
  12. By intervening, there is always the risk that the member of staff supposedly responsible for the students may feel undermined by your actions. (the carrot and stick "I said they could go on games once they finished their work" mindset)
  13. I feel your pain At the bottom of a Ubuntu Launchpad bug report (Google the error description) there's a script modification you might be able to make to turn the errors off; but if things are in hand to move and it's sort-of working now, I would just leave it. Don't look/touch/breathe near the server just in case
  14. Yep, better Hehe. I've found Opera to pretty much implement the standards as they should be, but woe betide you if using a workaround for another browser in the process.
  15. Nice one. Not sure if you're too bothered; but the top of the text "Copyright Hatfield Visual Arts College | Website built by Damien Deakes" is still touching the line above it (image I posted before) - in FF/Chrome it's vertically centred.
  16. @dirtydogmitchell: £5-8K for the SAN, or for servers + SAN? If just the SAN, have a look at the Sun 7110. There are many happy customers of it on here - ourselves (bossman and I) and john, off the top of my head.
  17. Not bad at all. The only thing I was going to point in Opera, clareq has already covered it; but then noticed that the footer graphic doesn't quite match up - perhaps an image will help explain.
  18. PM sent Thanks timbo343. @Edu-IT It's now running Wolf CMS instead. Must get round to doing a write-up on the feature, it seems very sought-after.
  19. Canonical Landscape looks good for more than a handful of Ubuntu machines. At the moment all of our Ubuntu servers are separate and unaware of eachother - no fancy scripts to tie things together synchronously.
  20. It's not a new idea. http://www.edugeek.net/forums/mis-systems/31766-open-source.html (thread on EduGeek) FreeMIS | Get FreeMIS at SourceForge.net SchoolTool: free gradebook, attendance, calendars and more.
  21. You're really running a mission-critical server on a non-LTS version of Ubuntu? I'd advise a fresh install of 10.04 and see if you still have those errors at setup. If you do, can you disconnect the LVM volumes that are used as Xen SRs while installing Ubuntu, then re-connect them afterwards and configure their mountpoints?
  22. @Number6 Providing you don't want to run Ebox on the same machine as Exchange, there's no reason to get rid of Exchange.

I made my own, Login Tracker, using VBScripts and PHP/MySQL. Info and Download. v2 is a work in progress and will encompass a much-improved UI (like this). I'm also debating over using CouchDB instead of/as well as MySQL for data storage.
  24. I had thought about going Debian too, but prefer the LTS versions of Ubuntu for simplicity and duration of updates, as well as "harmonising" all our Linux servers to one distro.
  25. Installing Ubuntu on Citrix XenServer is fine; but to get better performance it should be running paravirtualised (PV) instead of hardware virtualised (HVM - the default). Ubuntu isn't natively supported, so it needs a bit of manual work to achieve it. I've put together a page on our wiki that details the steps needed to get it up and running in PV mode and get the XenServer tools installed (and running at start-up!). Ubuntu 10.04 LTS paravirtualised on Citrix XenServer [bishop Barrington IT Wiki] If you spot any mistakes please correct me. Enjoy.
