  1. If the school leadership team will not allocate money for a central or departmental staff laptop fund - then the solutions is simple - just don't offer laptops. This is the route we are taking. Anyone who still has one is lucky to do so. Anyone whose laptop breaks and cannot be economically repaired is unlucky. Anyone who starts from now should be told not to expect a laptop to be given to them.
  2. According to this other post that describes a similar screen and text, it's software by Paragon - Boot problem
  3. Hi Stuart_C. I'm hoping for a summer release of v2, so please try v1 again if you want something in the interim. It needs PHP version 4 - 5.2 (won't work on 5.3).
  4. Are you sure there aren't any small scraps of paper left in any rollers or dropped in to any compartments?
  5. Or how many of those Bruno Mars has caught.
  6. Same for me (Be broadband). Not sure if it's EduGeek or 3rd party ad servers yet.
  7. A lot of tripods have hooks under the main stem, so you can hang your bag or other weight from it to make it [more] sturdy.
  8. I would be inclined to mix things up so cables don't have that far to go to the switches, and to minimise the amount of vertical cables that end up getting in the way. I've attached a photo of the top half of a 42U cab that I think has a similar amount of stuff to what you want.
  9. Accessory: I don't have any. But a friend has a lenspen for cleaning dust/smudges from lenses and swears by it. Lens: 50mm f/1.8d (or equivalent) Another tip I got from a photo friend: If you have a camera bag with 1+ lenses in, keep some sachets of silica gel tucked away in there. Helps to stop condensation building up on the glass surfaces.
  10. Another interesting idea! I got the Quality Street one from a friend who I met via my local Flickr group - here's a link to a photo of his using that method: Gem Andrews - 306/365 | Flickr - Photo Sharing!
  11. Or Quality Street chocolate wrappers.
  12. Yes it's part of Yahoo Not all groups are ones that go out and about, so you'll have to read the description of them. But just go to the Groups search, put in your local town/city and have a browse. There are also groups centred around ventures to try and get you out and taking photos, such as 365 (photo every day for a year), 52 Week (one every week for a year), or street photography challenges for example.
  13. Pleased you've found one It's not a bad little camera. DPReview have (as usual) an in-depth review on it. It seems very good quality and great value for money. The sample JPEGs straight out of the camera look a bit soft, but it seems to have good RAW capability with bundled software to match. Are you on Flickr? I joined Flickr a while ago and found a local group who meet up regularly - visit different places and take photos (in between coffee shops and pubs ) It's good to be amongst others to share tips, ideas and just talk with people with (another) similar interest.
  14. These matters should definitely not be swept under the carpet.
  15. tech_guy: Who said you could mussel in on the bad jokes??
  16. I get the error Sorry, we couldn't find a policing area that matched your search. for my postcode, town and city. According to Netcraft, it's running on Amazon EC2. So much for the cloud!
  17. Really... ?
  18. I agree with localzuk on the 50mm lens idea - I have the Nikon 50mm f/1.8D and it's fantastic. I only switch to the kit zoom lens (18-105) when doing sport stuff usually.
  19. Not as many as SLRs, and usually just the manufacturer's own line. But the Panasonic ones seem to have a nice range for what most people want to achieve.
  20. The short answer is, it depends. Some do and some don't - you just have to check the specs. Some compact Panasonic Lumix cameras will even do RAW, while high-end compacts from Canon and Nikon won't. I would say most of them do though.
  21. Yes, we have! We've had several models of Kyocera printers and have been plagued with problems in all of them. 1010/1020: After a while, the factory-fitted smooth paper pickup rollers would stop picking up paper. After lengthy discussion with Kyocera, they sent us replacement rollers that were grooved and could grip better. This worked OK, but required cleaning once in a while. Sometimes the printers refused to print long documents of many pages (usually printing the first page and then giving up). A power cycle sometimes fixes problems, but not always. C5016: A4 colour. Colour registration would sometimes go funny and not print accurately. Initially, the cold start to first print would take over a minute, but this was later solved with different drivers. It would also struggle with large documents. C8008: A3 colour. Sometimes documents would not print (particularly ones with photos in), and would occasionally need a power cycle for it to start accepting documents again. Memory upgrades didn't help. C8026: A3 colour. Toner bays had flimsy plastic parts/covers which broke easily. During its last working months, toners were held in place with pieces of card wedged in at various angles so they would be registered as being present. Similar problems accepting big documents and heavy paper. The rest of our printers (now about 38) are HP. Last year, a 9-year-old 4600N died, and we've had a couple of issues with 2015 formatter boards. But apart from that - they've been excellent.
  22. We had the exact same problem with the large A3 Kyocera printers we used to have; even after upgrading the memory. They were so rubbish in the end we just got rid of them. Sorry that doesn't really solve your problem though!
  23. I'm a Nikon fan and currently have a D90 which I'm very happy with. No one says you have to go down the SLR route, though. It might be a good idea to have a look at the Micro 4/3 range of cameras currently available. Smaller footprint and with interchangeable lenses. Panasonic Micro 4/3 Cameras (GF1, GH2, G2, G10) | Robert White Photographic Ltd They're a little bit cheaper too.
  24. It doesn't transmit passwords back to the site at all - it's just javascript code that runs in your browser. But good news - my strongest password will take About 66 quintillion years to crack and my next strongest About a million years
  25. You could try Cameyo - application virtualisation. It's been discussed on EduGeek recently - http://www.edugeek.net/forums/thin-client-virtual-machines/61620-cameyo-like-vmwares-thinapp-but-completely-free.html
