Your IPhelper should be set at the core normally rather than the edge. We only use a few US-8-60s but we have setup VLANs rather than Corporate networks. The DHCP helper is done by the core - which is a HP switch.

We’ve been having problems this year since moving to w10 with printers not loading. To finally crack the issue we’ve ended up changing from a login script to a startup script in the start menu. This seems far far more reliable. Seems a little old fashioned, but it’s made the difference so it’ll do for me!

You need to add them individually as clients or you can pop in a subnet as we've done, but the NPS server doesn't make it clear you can do subnets.

For me the 888s are best. They only have a single lithium cell so can be charged via usb - they won’t need to get past a PAT. Most of the mains ones I’ve seen (on the two lithium cell models like the other one you show) have either a European wall power supply or single insulated mains cable - neither are great in a professional environment. They are far more simple than many alternatives - which is good in an untrained user environment. The usb cable is about a fiver and chirp is free. I’d be happy to send you a configuration file to program each of the channels if you like. CTCSS are sub tones transmitted to help segregate traffic. PMR only has eight frequencies you can use, but then 38 (testing my memory now) tones which can be used. Someone could have their radio tuned to the same channel as you, but it won’t pick up the audio because they are set on a different tone to you. In reality they don’t offer and security or much use, each channel can only be transmitting at one time and without them enabled you can just hear everything on the channel. If it’s only occasional use the 888s will be grand. If you want something to use everyday I’d look at Motorola like you original mentioned. We use them both at school (DP1400) and at the festivals I work at (DP3400).

Amazon and eBay are awash with the Baofeng BF-888S. They are a little, fairly rugged and very cheap hand held radio from a Chinese manufacturer. If you buy the programming cable (and download the free programming software Chirp) you can program them to send and receive PMR446 frequencies and program them with CTCSS tones. Now their stats say in low power mode they output 1amp, which is twice the legal limit for PMR446, but in reality they have over exaggerated stats and the real output is probably much closer to half an amp. At £10-12 a pop they are disposable enough even if you just test a couple. But make sure to get the ones with a USB charging dock - the mains ones don’t really pass any UK standards.

We’ve integrated our unifi into radius for our byod. That means we can transmit one SSID and all our users can use it but radius server will assign a vlan based on their security group membership. There is a guest pass section in the controller to use with the captive portal. I don’t think others have mentioned this... you don’t need to run the controller software 24/7 if you don’t want. The APs will work fine (as will radius) but the logging and captive portal won’t work. We moved from Ruckus to Unifi last Easter and the feedback has been very good from users. And then there’s the price!

What additional services are offered by your county, and will they work or help you get them working if you move away? Email, Encrypted email, Secure data transfers, Enrollment Systems, Finance packages, Telecoms, Trip management. Just a few off the top of my head we had to get around when we moved away.

Many of the HP switches don't allow more than 8 or 16 vlans by default, but you can increase this limit usually. However if you are tagging ports in that vlan it doesn't sound like that is your problem. Uplinks tagged, end ports untagged or tagged as appropriate? Posting the relevant parts of the configs will give us a bit more to go on.

We had our site designed by an external company who also hosted it the first year. Sadly when the snow hit their servers couldn’t cope so we’ve ended up hosting it ourselves on a vps - we plan to host a few other of our MAT schools as well. Hosting on-site was an option for us but as our website is the main form of bulk communication in the event of a major issue we decided off site is better... School is closed due to an ongoing Power cut - oh.

We've fitted 25 around school in corridors as a tannoy system mainly for lock-down incidents. Out of the box the units are set to use the Unifi controller (obviously) and the unifi edu app. There is very little you can do with the controller regarding the PA side of things - pretty much everything is done in the app. So you'll need an IOS or Android Device to set this up. Yes you can set schedules for a recorded sound, but this is setup within the app to be a voice recording really. However we found the sounds were recorded into a standard format and held within the controller folder (you'll have to forgive the fact I can't quite remember where) and could be replaced with a pre-recorded sound. The app allows you to broadcast straight from the IOS or Android device. So you can hit broadcast and select the group of units you wish to broadcast to and you are live. So you need a device ready for when that emergency happens. We're however not using the app. We've gone down the slightly more beta route of using the EDU speakers as SIP devices and setup a FreePBX to assign each one a number and create call groups. That way we've been able to integrate it into our phone system. So someone in the office can use a device they are familiar with to make an announcement when they are under pressure - in fact we could expand this to any phone in the building of cause. They lift a handset, dial a few digits and after a beep, they are live across school. Going down this route however disables the app entirely - so you loose the sound scheduling and broadcasting from a mobile device. However for our needs this was the best option - ease of use in an emergency. They are reasonably loud speakers, but perhaps better situated in each room if you are using it as a bell system multiple times a day. Each speakers volume can be adjusted for the room. A drama or tech room with equipment running is likely needed to be higher than an english room perhaps. On the corridors like we have them, through a fire door they are not brilliant. However because we're only using them in an emergency and not every day, users tend to prick up their ears because it's different. UK distributors have stopped stocking the EDU units - presumably because they weren't very popular and the AP attached to them is slightly older technology. They can still be purchased and they are currently not EOL (but who knows when that may change) but European stocks are coming from the Czech Republic at the moment - I bought one two weeks ago. There was a fire sale a few months ago when the UK distributors wanted them off their shelves, we bought our bulk at that time. They are not the loudest speakers, they are not the fanciest of APs either. But for the price they probably have more bang for buck than an AP (unifi or other) and a SIP speaker system (bodet or other) in one fairly neat package.

In a situation like this it may be sensible to pass the documents to your legal team and have them confirm the suggested redactions.

I think there is a real possibility of this working in the right school, but you asked for challenges so here are a couple that come to mind... What OS do your systems run? How will you deploy that OS or will you build each machines from scratch? How will you ensure that users aren't saving work locally on that OS unless you have some management tools? How will you host DHCP, DNS? How will you manage OS upgrades, security patches and firewalls? BYOD is great to supplement learning of many subjects but will it work for all subjects? I presume you're not thinking BYOD will work for IT lessons? So what kit, what OS, what services are required for teaching? You said you've got sims online - how does that play with O365 and or GDrive? My previous experience is capita like fully blown office for many reports. How will that work without some layer of OS management? Admin back office functions - finance, cashless catering, building management etc. Are they compatible in this new world? As others have mentioned, moving to cloud storage has a lot of wins, being serverless isn't really doable for me.

Moving from your LEA provider is perfectly possible and can save you money, but I'll list a few thoughts some of which haven't been covered in the thread from my experience... It sounds like you don't have a great relationship with your IT support - if you can't get them on board, does the school have the knowledge in house of your existing network, vlans, IP ranges etc. to communicate this with a possible new provider - does that person have access to be able to achieve a move? Have you the expertise in house to effectively maintain and monitor a filtering product? You'll need to ensure it is robust, effective, updated and otherwise fit for purpose. Or do you need a supplier who will fully take on this responsibility? Same goes for a firewall. Are the LEA offering additional services which you may struggle, or have to outlay further public funds to replicate? Secure access to their hosted systems is a typical one, finance, trip management, enrollments, email, web hosting. They may charge you for accounts, tokens, support etc. all which you'll need to factor in. Speed - are the services available in your area to boost your speed? In practice will they deliver? Some small village schools who think they are being charged a lot for very little find they are being heavily subsidized by the LEA to get a half decent connection to the premises. What other services are provided over your LEA link? Telephones, the library attached next door, community wifi?

It was them who don't actually carry stock any longer and ship from the Czech Republic - I guess they mean 'In Stock with our supplier'. Can't complain really, it only took three working days.

Safeguarding does not trump GDPR. However your legal obligation under keeping children safe in education would give you a valid legal basis under which you can process some data. You'd still have to justify that you were processing the data under that legal obligation and do so with adequate protections.

Just as an update on this for anyone who might be interested we ordered an additional uap-ac-edu yesterday from the only uk supplier who said they had stock (back up to the £300+ pricing too) and they’ve been in touch to say actually they don’t have stock, and they only order EDU units in when required now. The one we ordered is being shipped from the Czech republic.

GADS (Google Active Directory Sync) was the previous name for Google Cloud Directory Sync. You should find some files in "PF\Google Cloud Directory Sync" called error.log and output.log that may help explain the issue, or in the logging tab of GCDS you should see where the scds_sync log is held. Hopefully one of them will give you a better error to go on. If you've still got some limitations to your account I think it shows up in the Company profile section of the Admin Console.

Just be aware if you're looking for something bespoke or even a little bit customized from tier one vendors then you'll get deal registered. Basically the first sales person to talk to you about the project will register your interest and get best pricing on the kit. I've had experience of this even going direct. As a result it is perfectly normal for the second company you approach to be significantly higher on the same spec. So it's always best to go to your preferred supplier first :-)
