The same (I think) provisioning tool is used in their learning gateway. You provide a list of rules and it generates the usernames. Ie. 6 letters of family name (X), 1 letter of first name (Y), year of intake. eg... XXXXXXY11. The system allows for duplicates by adding an increasing number on to the end.

Leeds licenced sims across the city for schools, so very few (if any??) use anything else to my knowledge. I guess someone might have moved away, or perhaps an independent?

I've just installed HAP+ this morning, but have the following issue when I try to use the silverlight version of the My Computer. I suspect its an issue with Silverlight but perhaps you can tell me? I had trouble with the HAP+ Config Tool.exe, which kept crashing, so ended up editing the conf file myself. So it could something I've missed?

Funny you should say that. There is an issue with the latest firmware for the 2510g's. It crashes on accessing the web gui, so currently they are running Y_11_12.

We are just about to put in 1x 5412ZL, 3x 2910AL 24G PoE, 12x 2510G-48, 4x 2510G-24, and somewhere there is a partridge in a pair tree. So +1 for procurve! I've never had to prove ownership on procurve kit to HP support though.

We've recently bought 16 macs for use within our creative media departments, and will be letting some staff loose on them in the next week or so. So I'm not the worlds leading expert on this, but it is fairly fresh in my mind. You can just bind your macs to your AD domain, the advantage of using a mac server (we went for a mac pro, but a mac mini server should be fine) is to lock down your mac clients. Like a basic GPO really. Drive mapping the type of which you want is working in my environment. Our users use \\server\share\intakeyear\username quite happily as their home drive. We have also created shortcuts on the dock to our usual windows shares. Your shares on the network should be secured anyway. What happens if someone walks into the building and plugs their laptop into a data socket? I would worry less about what the macs can access, and more what anyone could access if they so wished! Apple remote desktop is a useful bit of software, and not too expensive. Also look into Deploy Studio. Fantasic bit of software for imaging the macs.

The quotes we have been getting are for about £36-40 per FTE staff. I assume you are multiplying the quoted unit price by the number of machines, rather than staff? If you have 30 staff for example, the quote should be for £1200/year at most!

To start you off... You'll need to look at wpad or proxy.pac files to help your users automatically configure their proxy settings. Most browsers support wpad. I would suggest you probably want to VLAN the network and use access control to ensure that the laptops / phones / netbooks etc. can only access the ip addresses you want them to. Assuming your pupils have their own log ons to your network, and suitable folder permissions are set, they should be able to browse to their shares and not be able to access anything else. You wont be able to configure a Group Policy for them, they wont be fully connected to your domain.

Just taken a look at my ZD3000 and I think you'll need a router. The ZD is mearly a AP controller with the extra function of a DHCP server. You'll need something to do the NAT. The Zone Director manages the Access Points, and provides centralized authentication services for the WiFi clients. It is not a router.

We had this problem, however it showed up as duplicate marks. The pupil might end up with an N mark from teacher, and a I mark from our attendance officer, for example. In the main it was due to overly organised teachers opening their first register as soon as they came into the building, possibly an hour before they were going to mark the register. We've averaged ours out over all printers. 3p for mono, 10p for colour. This pretty much covers all our printer costs (paper,toner and maintenance / replacement), but our Art colour laser does run at a bit of a loss due to the higher percentage cover.

Muse, muse and muse. Fantastic live band. Haven't seen them for a couple of years though. More recently I've been working the festivals... so I've been able to watch some great bands from the side of stage, which adds to the excitement a little.
