I was about 14 when I took on a bet to put a whole packet of Trebor XXX mints in my mouth at the same time (which I had to suck not chew). I learned a valuable lesson that day and took my winnings graciously.

We too are just implementing it this summer. Traveller mode is pretty straight forward. Plug the pen in, a password prompt comes up, pop in password, hit return, encrypted file system pops up (always the same drive letter). Right (or left) click on truecrypt icon and press dismount all. Roberts your fathers brother. I expect there will be teething issues, but we are creating some guides and will be taking the staff through the procedure when we get them to set their password. 200 pens are being manufactured with our truecrypt installation as we speak so it had better work!

Just be aware that a number of companies sell usb sticks as protected, secure or some other loose term. Most are not encrypted, and are simply password protected hidden partitions. These can be viewed in seconds with partition software and the like.

At my old place I was on the H&S panel for a bit. One fire drill we blocked a staircase, and told everyone that attempted to leave that way the fire was in that staircase. It caused all sorts of problems, and proved that people needed a reminder of their alternative exit points! We thought about firing off the smoke machine from drama, but were worried it might cause a panic!

Not if the software is already installed on the machines it doesn't. Roguespears MSI is very handy for deploying it. Just be aware that I think the latest RS version is 6.1. Truecrypt containers made in 6.2+ will not open with it. To get round this you can also deploy a 6.2 truecrypt.sys after using the RS MSI. Everything then work happily. We have deployed truecrypt to all machines. Staff are advised to install truecrypt if they are using macs or linux at home. Staff using windows shouldn't need to install if they are admins at home.

Truecrypt has a MAC version (and linux). Once installed USB pens in traveller mode work like a treat and all three platforms.

We have the following list; Image 101 new PC's and distribute around site. Build a new ICT room from a standard classroom. Reimage another 300 PC's. Implement a new printing plan, increasing access and (hopefully) reducing administration. Replace 50 CRTs with TFTs. Dispose of old machines and CRTs. Replace 30 machines in the Adult Ed centre on site (awaiting go ahead from centre). Create two websites for feeder primary schools. Find a couple of days to use some leave. It will keep us busy.

It is a bit of a faff but we see it as a nessasary faff. We did look at the DataTraveler Privacy Edition (in fact there is one next to me kingston sent me for free) but they are very expensive to buy. It's not a perfect solution though. It is vulnerable to brute force password attacks as is Truecrypt, but at least the USB stick hasn't cost you £50+. The Kingston Pavacy Ed pens don't work on osx or linux either according to the pack.

I've just ordered 200 usb sticks which I am having preloaded with truecrypt in traveller mode. The traveller container file takes up the whole 4GB of space (after the truecrypt portable software). The sticks will have the school logo and contact details printed on them, and a serial number so we can investigate any loss. We are deploying Truecrypt to the school PCs using the RogueSpear MSI package, although our latest clone will have it preloaded. This avoids the end users requiring admin rights. The only problem is the RogueSpear MSI is version 6.1 and containers created in 6.2 will not open. This can be overcome by deploying the 6.2 driver file (truecrypt.sys) using xcopy. As a result Windows users autorun the pen when it's plugged in. Truecrypt runs, asks for their password, assigns the letter I have set, and mounts the drive. They can not save to the unencrypted area, because it is full. All files are hidden except for a readme file I created. Mac and Linux users will need to install the software on their home machines. I need to write some instructions...

VST stands for Virtual Studio Technology if memory serves - otherwise known as plugins. We use 10 XP based machines with Cubase Essentials 4 Education, and Sybalius 4 (soon to be upgraded to 6) with USB midi keyboards. Our students don't seem to go too in depth into Cubase. Just fairly basic midi composition.

Can't say I have had this trouble. We have four 2600 series printers all working fine along side IE7. I'll lock that in the 'I remember somebody saying something about that' bank in case it comes up in future. Cheers

The papers decided to out the stig earlier this year. I didn't read the story because I didn't really want to know who it was. The top gear team were quite annoyed. The media have known who the stig was for ages, but they would all play along with the joke. Revealing Schui as the stig is their way to have a dig at the media. I bet another driver is revealed as the stig next week as well.

I had trouble with activation as well. All done now. I like the search facility. As mentioned copy and paste and MMS long over due. Otherwise nothing much to write home about.

I'd log on as admin, run the program and run filemon and/or regmon (available in the Edugeek Project - Admin Bar), and see what the program is doing. That will give you an idea what is being accessed.

How did you guess?

We put in a R1soft CDP server at Easter with three windows agents. I have been really impressed with it. Saved my bacon a few weeks ago when a server went south. Full system drive restore had me up and running again in a matter of a couple of hours. I also find the guys at R1soft are very helpful. We had an issue with the LEAs proxy messing up the activation. R1soft changed my licence so I didn't have to activate.

If you go into action and preferences, you can change the user defaults. This allows you to create home directories, set permissions, quotas, profile directories, and even create a file structure to set in place. Although I tend to just place \\server\share\%username% in the users home directory field in standard Users and Computers, then it creates the home directory anyway. I'm pretty sure AUM will do everything you want it to. Check the user guide for more clarification.

If you check the FAQs, you can become exdirectory by ringing a free 0800 number. Also they don't actually give your number to the person who is looking for you. Instead they text you asking you to get in touch with the person who has contacted them (does that make sense?).

I found this VBS script somewhere on the net, and use it to delete files more than 30 days. Just edit the path and days (calcresult)...

I had a play. Seemed to work quite well. Other projects took priority, and funding for screens dried up. We haven't implemented it.

The laptop could be dropped due to panic in a real emergency. At least paper records can be picked up again, and they are still going to work. I can see the environmental advantage to this solution though. Because of the complicated nature of the organisations we work in. I'm not sure there is one clear answer to this issue.
