We run Smoothwall UTM1000 with group management templates using AD user groups so that we can allow access for different groups to various sites i.e. Youtube, facebook etc we will be drilling this down even further when we get round to it. It is a very controlled access to Youtube in which all comments are inaccessible and anything dodgy is filtered out also. Cannot speak any higher of the Smoothwall product.

@john: Sorry to hear you having so much hassle with your 7110 kit, we have been running ours now for over a year now with 3 hosts attached running 17 VMs and it doesn't seem to be breaking into a sweat. Uptime has been nearly a year (320 days) nice! Would like another 7110 4Tb one to mirror ours for total fail-over will be looking for a second hand one if its free to a good home. I do hope you get sorted John as you seemed to really enjoy running it. Let me know how it goes John

@glennda: What spec workstations will you be putting them into? It seems a lot to buy in one go as they will all fail around the same time then you will have to replace them all again would it not be better to do them in batches of 50? Must be nice to have that amount of money to spend on just HDDs (Just envious hehe!) But then again did all my spending over the past 2 years. My advice would be to purchase 10 and see how they go then if all is well go for it.

@aaqib: It seems the mobo has got some dry solder joints and the onboard network interface is part of this. What we did was take the mobo out and place it in an oven on greaseproof paper at a temperature of 180 degrees (gas mark 4) for 8 minutes, leave to cool and then put back into printer. This should sort your problem out as we have quite a lot here and as I have said it is down to the lead free solder producing dry joints on the mobo. Good luck and let me know how you get on.

Laptops for teachers is slowly dying out here as we are not replacing teacher laptops as they are far too costly to maintain and bring too many end user problems with them. Desktop in every classroom connected to IWB for them to work from so no excuse, these get upgraded every 3 years (Combo units with 3 year warranty), remote desktop so they can work from home if they care too using their own computer, laptop etc, no need for them to pester school for software to be installed and no need to use USB pen drives or external HDDs as they access every app they use at school. This has led to better security all round and the data stays firmly on the schools virtual network. Staff are over the moon and really have accepted this new way of working as it is a benefit to them and not a hindrance, plus it means we have more time to produce better services for them to expand on their teaching and learning framework. We will expand on this for the students to use remotely but until then they will use our Moodle VLE for the moment as all they require is on there. My advice is not to go with the laptops and wireless throughout as it will only lead to headaches and frustration for both the staff and the IT team.

The Comms badges we can do as they rely on Cisco protocols and the CC4 works very well with the Isolinear circuitry and bio-neural gel packs but it can't handle the mapping of printers through the software and the users profile (Scotties working on this at the moment) will let you know for the future if the control of the Turbo lifts has been sorted so the staff and students can get to where they need much quicker.

Wireless throughout with laptops and Ipads plus IWBs (very 21st century) and open plan spaces for enhanced teaching and learning hehe! All attached to the "cloud" which will be managed by the LA's managed service team as cheaply and ineffectual as possible so that the ICT becomes a joke rather than an enhancement to the school. Used to own several "Lambretta's" in my time and the only reason they wouldn't start was because they were flooded, the best thing to do is to leave for about 10 mins as it will be an automatic choke system and will dry out the cylinder and spark plug then turn ignition on and kick-start or electric start without touching the throttle, it should start up fine.

@round2it: Is it something to do with the file-sharing: finder's preferences go to the sidebar tab and uncheck "bonjour computers". to prevent computers from being seen, under the "sharing" tab in system preferences go to sharing and make sure the file sharing tab is unchecked Am not a Mac user tho

@mburland: Another suggestion would be to purchase a new server which you could install ZenServer (free virtulisation platform) and then run the P2V tool which would virtualise your old DC and you could then do this with any other servers you have. I would of course stipulate that you may need to purchase a backend SAN for storage of your VMs but this would seem to me to be the perfect time to go down that route.

@apaton: Before you go ahead with this I would speak to @john as he was just telling us last friday how the latest Oracle update had rendered his box virtually useless. This may be the update he has been waiting for but then again this may be the one he has installed.

Just purchased a beautiful 42" LCD with built in freeview HD and network connectivity plus all the other inputs you could think of for £329.00 from Tesco's and the model in question is the Technika (German built) and the sound and picture quality match that of TVs 3 - 4 times its price with a 3 year warranty it warrants a look. I have been very impressed
