It may be old technology which may or may not be correct in it's entirety but for the past 6 years I have not had a problem with using this method which only utilises the technology for that user on that workstation and we have had not one problem with network glitches or using a mapped drive (all very stable here for the past 10 years) I did try localising the pdoxusrs.net file but different users on different workstations had different structures in FMS and it all seemed too unstable and faults would have occurred had we remained using it this way that's for sure. As for security, well all I can say is that the user group who we have defined as users of FMS are the only group that can access this shared folder and this is fastened down to just 3 individual users who have the access rights and permissions set at this level and below. You pays your money and you makes your choice and for us this works excellently and there is no scripts to run when upgrading FMS as the workstations upgrade through the usual procedure when the server has been upgraded to the latest version. All the transfers both in and out are setup on the server and this just works for all the SIMS modules also like Exams etc so keeping everything central is best in my opinion. @matt40k No disrespect to your good self, you have probably used and developed your own system and I do follow what you are saying.

Yes but we are on with another project which will make this redundant. Remote desktop has all the functionality if used in conjunction with a laptop or netbook (works very well in fact). As for our PE dept we are in the midst of IPhone testing with emerge app.

Sure is T4 is no longer usable and is not accessible in the latest summer release as my end users keep complaining about printing the timetable off.

It has been and will always continue to be this way as long as we have a monetary system in place. I try not to allow sentiment to take over my life as it tends to allow other dark feelings come over one (Depression) stop thinking and start living, it is not really worth the amount of energy that one could spend debating this as we cannot change it even though there are people who think you can. We are only the small people in relation to those who control the world in which we live in and they can only control the money side of it not the behaviour side of people. As has happened it does emphasise the fact that it is not only the poor element of our society that has been effected by these riots. In all it is a crying shame that any decent law abiding citizen should default to these kind of alleged criminal activities (Just in case there are any lawyers reading this) Try not to think too much into this for your own sense of worth

Why 500Gb drives for your hosts? We only have 2x 73Gb SAS 15000 rpm drives mirrored in our Dell 2950 power edge hosts x3 connected to our 2 storage SANs with HA. Also I would put as much memory as you can get into your hosts we have 32Gb in each but will upgrade this to 64Gb when we can afford it. Everything else looks good though which hypervisor are you going with? We run Xenserver 5.6 here and it has been rock solid with a very small footprint as opposed to VMware and Hyper-V also cheaper for other extras. Hope this is is helpful.

Every installation of Sims within schools is seemingly different and sometimes what is a generic guide to what may be the solution sometimes needs a little tweak. I did have a problem with the dotnet framework 4 which somehow stopped the staff from generating reports, swapped the protocol within Sims through the tools to TCP from http and it just works. I will have a look at the way the IE GPO is delivered when I get round to it hehe! Just be happy that you are sorted and you can now rest easy tonight while you have a glass of whatever and something nice to eat. Enjoy your evening

@ctaylor: I would definitely schedule an informal meeting with your IT systems team as I am sure they would be amenable even if they are reluctant at first. Demonstrate exactly what it is you require within Sims itself (with the help of a Sims account with access rights) and maybe they will help you. I know as most other Systems managers are usually very helpful to all admin users when it comes to Sims. Personally my data manager has those access rights within Sims and I have no qualms whatsoever, work with them to understand Sims more as my data manager does with me so together you can iron out any problems. Have another go for their sakes. Good Luck

@randle: Had the same problem when we first moved to Windows 7 back in February, on your Sims server in the Sims dir you should have a folder called lockdir, in this dir you should have the PDOXUSRS.NET file this lockdir folder should have the appropriate permissions on it for the security groups that wish to access it. Then on the client workstation you are required to log in with admin access rights and alter the BDE through the administrator tool (I'm sure you know where this is) once in there you make the necessary changes i.e. the path to the lockdir folder on the Sims server and change the STRICTINTEGRTY to true as in the attached pic. Thanks for getting back so quickly @Sividam appreciate it, is there any way I can allow access to this for all the class teachers without creating an issue over safeguarding as it has been made a requirement by SLT for them to be able to access and print off this information prior to our up and coming Ofsted. Hi All, Within assessment going through the focus menu to marksheet entry as a class teacher, upon opening any of the marksheets available and right clicking on the grid at the left hand side in the student box it brings up 2 functions, one is to select additional student columns. Within the select columns to display as a teacher there is one tick box missing which is the Looked After column. If I add the SEN co-ordinator access permissions group to a test user who has just class teacher permissions then the Looked after column appears. What I am saying is this, should the class teacher permissions allow this Looked after column to be viewed as all the other columns are available to the class teacher profile. Does anyone else have this? I have the permissions XLS spreadsheet and there seems to be no mention of this function availability (if there is then I am missing it) Any input on this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

We use HP's Universal driver for all our HP printers I think it's version PCL5.1 which we use and it works on all our models even our 3500 which will be similar to your 3600. Here Good hunting its at the bottom PCL 5

@reggiep: You could virtualise it using the conversion tools for whichever system you wanted to use i.e. Xenserver, VMware etc We did and now have 2 running alongside each other 1.9 and 2.0.1 (for staff testing) soon to be 3 when we get our webanywhere project up and running. Just a thought.

@Cscott: We have a staffroom and also what we call a staff work area with the use of 3 computers and a HP colour laserjet 4600. This is what the staff asked for and they have not complained as they wanted the staffroom totally free from IT or any other form of digital devices. We are only a mid sized secondary school with 780 students and around 50 teaching staff but this seems to work quite well. All our classrooms have a computer in attached to IWBs and the teachers have laptops so this is also another reason why they only asked for 3 computers in the staff work area. Cheers
