@ben604: If your prepared to do a little research on the net and have a little time to do it then I would deffo go for the Passat,dropped on a lovely one about a year ago for 5k 2004 model highline with................wait for it..............................21k mileage on it, the interior was immaculate (back seats hadn't been sat in) the boot still had the blue plastic covering on and had not been used. So far all it has cost me is the price of a usual normal service £90:00 Its good for at least 250k mileage or 10-15 years whichever comes first. Good hunting my friend

@Hightower: 900 critical and non critical updates to date and after cleaning up have WSUS at 3.5Gb Hmm! not bad eh! Got all I require ticked and it just works gets all the updates once per week on a Sunday and then syncs across the site clients. Hows it going with the new Vanilla network? Eating sensibly with no in between meals and doing any form of exercise will mean you lose weight, slimming world lets you eat regular meals i.e. green days made up of pasta, rice and salads plus fat free yoghurt and plenty of fruit, red days when you can eat meat with your meals etc, save your sins for the weekend and your able to have a couple glasses of wine (If you want). 3 weeks in and nearly a stone lost and I always seem full and have lots of energy.

@JoeBloggs; Its a confidence thing, having been in IT as technician for only 2 years I was asked by the IT manager (ICT Teacher) if I wanted to take the role of network manager, if not they would advertise the position. It took me a couple of days to give them an answer and that was "Yes", never looked back, admittedly the learning curve was more straight and perpendicular but within time I had gained more confidence and used the skills that I had learned from past experiences in other jobs. If you manage your wages and household budget then your halfway there to planning and managing your schools IT budget, as for managing people that is a different kettle of fish but given that you can reflectively look at how you have been managed by your NM then you can take the good points and use this as experience for how you would manage a team. being reflective about what one has achieved and how much more one can achieve is the key to good management and remember, if you wouldn't like doing something then don't expect someone else to do it. Lead by example and all will fall into place, utilise the teams skills and always keep the channels of communication with both your team and the school staff open. Plan, design and implement after talking your strategies through with as many staff as is necessary and always be aware of everything around you. Engage with people and share your ideas as this helps build confidence in them as well as yourself. @monkeyx: An external to our school went down this route and got special business rates with a bunch of Blackberry's and it was relatively cheap. It can be done its just knowing who to contact. I would presume any phone provider will accommodate with special pricing as a business user with probably educational prices thrown in. Give one of the big players a ring.

@daveyboy: Any decent spec PC with a midi input on the sound card will do i.e. dual core processor with 4Gb ddr3 Ram and the HDD will probably be around the 160Gb sata plus decent sound card. What area have you to work with as they may need to play the keyboards whilst accessing the computer screens so this might mean mounting the TFTs on a bracket at the rear of the bench and having the unit fastened underneath in a sling while the keyboard and mouse are to the front of the desk area. Plan well and it will go well, ask your supplier to see if they can help you. Good luck

We will be using our Moodle VLE to connect students with teachers, parents with teachers and parents with student data including homework. This will become our one stop shop for teachers, students and parents. Just seems the right thing to do moving forward.

@le4ne: Have you though of going with some other developer such as these: TASC Software - excellence in education They charge £1 per student so much cheaper than the SLG and it fully integrates with Sims and they do other packages as well. They are a Capita partner so know all about the Sims. It will still cost but not as much.

RM have designed their own flavours and it just works once you know how to use it you can do all sorts of magic hehe! Fully Windows 7 here and no problems with roaming profiles, fast login times also, faster than we had before which was quick then. Tagged all our other linux services on beautifully. Only complaint and its not really a complaint is the way in which the printer mapping has let us down on a couple of occasions but I now have the update which will hopefully rectify this.

@Edu-IT: There is an upgrade path but not a direct one. Like thus: integrate server 2008R2 into Domain then transfer all the roles to this sever with promotion to DC after demotion of primary CC4 DC and then eventually a rebuild of your demoted server to 2008R2 with all CC4 packages then transfer of all the roles over to it and promotion after demoting the 2008R2 server. Then installation of all the CC4 packages and then giving it the role of replica DC simple's yeah! Something along those lines as I am sure someone will try to trip me up

Been using Zimbra for a good number of years and have now virtualised it, it runs very well, is free and as we cannot guarantee our ISP at this moment. The staff rely very heavily on it for all their personal communication in and out of the school and have become quite accustomed to it never being down in all this time so we would be very reluctant to move, although we have thought recently of migrating some of our web services to the cloud. Its so easy to push out services to the cloud but not as easy getting your data back if the occasion calls for it and you lose certain control. Each school has to weigh up the pros and cons of moving its services to the cloud and how it will benefit the staff and students.
