Not having an inbuilt Android has it's advantages as it doesn't represent a vulnerability surface and it less likely to slow down after being updated a few times. Simple Monitor type OSD interfaces last for the life of the hardware. My guess is Android software will not. Although we had some first gen Clevertouches and they were not supported by Windows 10 so I had to pay for the UPDD driver from Touch-Base.

I think the AD join is easier than years ago when I last looked into it but for serverless schools or if you are using OneDrive/GDrive it seems a no brainer to use that rather than use SMB shares. Also Chromebooks rock! Maybe not for music production yet.

Does user profiles work the same as full fat Windows 11? The speed of login is not the main issue it was the fact that big user profiles containing the appx files (Store Apps) consume the whole disk quite fast.

Have they sorted out the slow login times with multiple users. Guess with 1:1 this is a non-issue but a Chromebook will log in really quick if used multi-user and its not re-installing (usually unwanted) apps in the background before login which seems a stupid design decision by MS

We are looking at a hybrid approach. We got 1:1 Chromebooks during lockdown but we prefer the Microsoft tools. I am looking for a single sing on solution to help us use Office 365 on the Chromebooks in the most streamlined way. I believe you can replace the sign in screen when you turn on the Chromebook as used by Wonde with their Emoji logins. What is the best partner to go with the build the SSO solution or are there SSO solutions already out there?

They have to cater to the majority first. Those SEN developers can always update their apps to work on SE. Its not as if Metro/Modern/Windows Store apps are a new thing anymore. On Chromebooks and iPads the developer still has to create a new version just for that platform. Its just that in the business world they have resisted Metro/Modern apps and they have always felt like an unnecessary add on when we can just run the win32 versions of an app and take the risks. The fact that in education we have had Candy crush and massive user profiles shoved in our faces by MS does not help us love Metro/Modern/Windows Store Apps. Microsoft have had TEN YEARS to try to sort this out. (Windows 8 was released in 2012!!) Oh will Windows 11 SE finally fix the problem of multiple users on the same device and having to wait for windows to install all the Windows Store Apps for each new user?

Yeah but if you use a web based editor all that is done by the Server right? I guess you could use a SD card to get around the local storage issue or just upload to the webservice on a teacher's beefier machine. Then once it's uploaded the local resources are irrelevant.

365 was mega glitchy in many ways yesterday including everloading mailbox envelope animation and Sway being read only. I use the full fat Outlook on windows so don't get to dogfood the same stuff as the teachers.

I had an issue this week with ASM and JAMF and I fixed it by going into each iPad and ensuring the WiFi network was set to Auto-Join=ON for some reason it was off and the iPads were disconnecting after 2 minutes and couldn't communicate with APNS. Haven't found the root cause yet as the payloads in JAMF and Apple Configurator were all set to Auto-Join=ON

This is a fudge but you could use screentime restrictions to only allow Safari to access a whitelist of websites. Then add onedrive domains to the whitelist. Unfortunately MDM cannot modify this whitelist as its designed as a local restriction. MDM can disable the screentime/restrictions feature altogether but that's it.

Does LGfL have a transparent proxy feature? If you don't need to configure a proxy setting then most devices will work. If you do have transparent proxying then you might be you have to find out what domains to allow through the filtering.

We don't have PDAs any more. I raised this issues a few years ago and was told it was for SEO reasons. Surely the does not trump hiding iOS info. This is pretty mainstream and has been for many years and hiding it under PDAs might have been funny a few years ago but now it looks bad.

@SamDavis Thanks for advice. I knew it wasn't a boost just less optical attenuation vs copper or even low tech amplified copper. Guess any pig tail cables and connectors are before the signal is converted to optical and hopefully error-corrected when re-digitised into optical signal so signal still makes it to screen.

I am getting 6 screens installed soon. I have had to buy Cat6 UTP extenders for HDMI at huge expense in the past. This time I want to go for Fibre HDMI. they are 20m lengths so would you say that the active fibre boost makes up for the attenuation of the pigtail in the faceplate?

Don't go cheap on HDMI runs. Use optical or twisted pair adapters. Even if you or the installer can get your combo of PC and display working when you come to change the device on either end it might stop working. If you are running HDMI out of spec you are taking risks. Again i say buy the twisted pair (HDMI over UTP) adapters. You can get ones that transmit power for the receiver side over the Cat5 so no power needed at the display side. Why are most installers just ignoring the HDMI specs and putting in 15M copper non-active cable?!?!?!? We have had so many intermittent issues with our HDMI cable runs. We can switch back to VGA but the quality really plummets and is very noticeable plus most new Touch screens have separate USB inputs for each video input so swapping between HDMI and VGA is a pain. I always insist on twisted pair adapters now.

Hi, We have had 20 Samsung A7 Tablets donated by Mailforce via ComputaCenter. They are brand new. We need to look at how we can use them in school safely. They will not be taken home. I was thinking of using SecURLy or Google Endpoint management advanced. If we don't want to buy the licences for that or another MDM is there a free app that would allow us to setup a whitelist only approach. Can Google Family Link do this? Is there a limit for how many devices you can have on Family link?
