... I just did this in a classroom and the teacher thought it was magic. If a piece of equipment isn't responding to the remote, point the remote into your camera lens and press a button. The camera sensor can see IR light.

The author above was in a pub boasting that he could tell any wood simply by smelling it. "OK put your money where your mouth is", said the landlord. So they blindfolded him and held a barstool to his nose. "Too easy", he declared. "Mexican pine from the foothills of Mount Ticcywikkiwahu". So they tried him with the dartboard. "Ummm", he mused. "I'll have to think about this one. Ah yes, Portuguese cork from the forests just north of Silves". This went on for some time, with him correctly identifying all the wood they presented with him. Then the landlord whispered to the barmaid, "Quick Daisy, give me your pants". Daisy dropped her knickers and the landlord held them up to the expert's snout. After a good long sniff he shook his head and exclaimed "I think you've got me! No hang on, let's have another sniff". He took a deep whiff, sneezed violently and then yelled triumphantly. "Got it. It's a bog house door off a Grimsby trawler".

I never liked the show, I could never work out whodunnit! Great shame, it was family entertainment. Wasn't there an episode where you finally met his wife and she was an absolute stunner?

I'll be frank with you all, this thread has given me a perforated ulcer. -
I just had the same thing happen with a video of our kids on BBC News. I've go twixtor, which makes the task dead easy but that's not free and needs a good video editor as well.. You should be able to do it with moviemaker. (I haven't tried). Alternatively, download a trial video editor.

Their a bit difficult to deal with on the phone, very long-winded but once they have established you need a part, it gets to you pdq. I used Viglen Tech Support on Monday and I have to say, it was a breeze. I got through straight away, told the guy the problem, we agreed it was probably the mobo and an engineer was in at 10am next day.

The problem with cheap dvd players is just that! We have a few and they are far from satisfactory. Some don't play RW some skip, the remotes don't work. Real PITA.
