I'm Adobe through and through because that's what I was brought up with. However, unless it sits on its own personal little computer, that has equivalent power to Deep Thought, it tends to get unhappy and crash a lot (by it, I mean anything from Elements to CS6). The real world of media still tend to use Apple products and Final Cut Pro. So, unless you can offer them that, you may as well use Movie Maker or other cheap and cheerful products. In some ways that's a good thing because it will teach them real-time editing. By that, I mean planning their shoots to minimise the amount of editing they need to do.

Are they any good? We will be getting wifi in Portugal soon and I thought I might take an old laptop out there. Dont want anything decent because guests would use it. As stations transfer to Astra 2F we will lose them in the Algarve. C5 and its associates have already gone. It would be nice to have an alternative.

Still XP here but the plan is to upgrade to W7 over Easter.

We gave our last lot to the Air Training Corp. They are now having to do eLearning and exams, so they are more than happy. One of the trainers is a computer engineer, which helps.

You haven't answered my questions. How is he trying to import the video into his computer, you say it's not happening. Does that mean it's not working? If he is using a firewire connection and it's not working, that's normally down to camera settings but that's going to be the least loosey way to do it. If it's analogue, then it needs to be converted to digital using a device as mentioned above. Again, from what you say, your friend has the means to transfer the video but can't get it to work. If it is a HDD digital camera, you can connect to the computer usb port and you can treat it as an external drive. Likewise, with card based cameras.

I think you are right. I was a member of a DV Forum and up to a few years ago, it was very active. It has now closed down. The sites that are still around cater mainly for the pros. I've no idea how so many card shops can survive in one town but charity shops have very low overheads, their profit margins are as good as it gets and there is no longer any stigma about shopping there. I recently needed a dark suit for a funeral and I got a lovely Piere Cardin one from Cancer Relief, with two pairs of trousers, for £25. 100% wool and very comfortable.

We used to have two in Worcester and I would spend a happy hour in them, chatting with the staff and looking at the gear. I even bought stuff. They've never managed to compete online and it's a safe bet that a lot of people have handled the goods in their stores and then bought online from http://www.cameragadgetsgizmos.com. It will still be sad day if and when they go. More jobs lost and another High Street shop charity shop or card shop.

I only use it first thing on a Thursday, usually it doesn't go out until later in the day and has defrosted, so it wouldn't be worth spending a lot of money. I have considered the thermostat and I'll get it checked the next time it's serviced.
