In our sole server, we have 4 HDDs in RAID5. The additional complication is that the 4 servers are virtualised on Server 2012R2 Hyper-V (non-GUI). I ran the Dell diagnostics and one of the disks is starting to fail. It is out of warranty. I know what should have been done and told people in plenty of time, but that time is gone.... A replacement server is due to be installed on 25th July. I have cloud backups My query is what to do next. I see my options as: 1) Pray 2) Take the failing disk out and re-configure the RAID across 3 drives and then restore from backup 3) Buy a replacement HDD and let the RAID rebuild The delay in replacing the server was financial constraints, so spending money will be a hard fight. Any other free options welcome

This thread might move me towards the camp of encrypting server hard drives. I'd say there is a data protection issue - both under the old DPA and under GDPR. I'd suggest that you either say no and run the risk they take you to court over a knackered hard drive or insist that before you hand over the disk, you need a data transfer agreement and then a data destruction certificate within a time period you specify. And make it clear that you will report them to the ICO if they don't produce the certificate.

Not sure where you've got to with this, but I've just looked inside our old Dell server (I was trying to find out what model of HDDs are inside ours; separate thread coming about that...) On the inside of the cover there was a very helpful schematic. It shows where the jumpers are to reset idrac and bios passwords are. Hope that helps.

I have four Hyper-V VMs on a Dell T410 and the backup on one of them has failed - both scheduled and when run manually. The error message says to run CHKDSK /R, which I've done and I get the following error: This suggests a failing HDD (no surprise, since the server is 7.5 years old). This gives me two questions: 1) How critical is afc2e2f8.msi to a running server and could I just copy it from somewhere else (or an earlier successful backup)? 2) How do I find which disk is failing on the array (RAID 5) when it's a VHD? The host is running Hyper-V Server 2012R2 - so it'll either need to be in PowerShell or via RSAT - or possibly via a Dell utility. Despite the error message saying that there's not enough space to replace the bad clusters, there's 21.9GB free of 44.4GB according to Windows. The server appears to be running fine and I have recently been able to update and re-boot it. Any assistance gratefully received. PS: Yes this is a critical server (it's the only one we have). Yes, I pointed out that it was a bad idea to rely on a 7.5 year old server with no warranty. Yes, we have a new server on order, but it's not going in until the summer holiday....

You need the machines to be Azure AD joined (optionally hybrid joined to your local domain) https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/active-directory/active-directory-conditional-access-policy-connected-applications They do mention that you can set up an extra level of security if you have an MDM, including Intune, but it's not a requirement. Conditional access policy is only available in P1 subscription or above. You should be able to set it up for files on demand to access SharePoint and OneDrive through Windows Explorer without any additional products. I'm having this set up for me, but there is a lot of documentation around.

We're a maintained school, but we've never had an ATF - we just get a CSV file from the admissions team at County. Our admissions officer has just logged onto the portal and there's no sign of anywhere to obtain an ATF. Wrt consent for the app, we'll invite them to access it and assume that if they register, they've consented. If not, it's down to them to tell us if details change (as is the case for all of them now, so it will be at least as good).

What version of Windows are the clients on? I thought Azure AD P1 was a justifiable cost given the potential benefits of the solution and risks if it goes wrong. We're using that and looking down access to domain machines - all staff have access to a laptop to take home if they need it.

I'd argue that we don't require consent. On that basis we wouldn't be in breach of Google's terms by not seeking consent.

Teaching Computing (including e-safety and effective use of the internet for research and coding) is part of the national curriculum. That'd be pretty difficult without internet access. We use Purple Mash (amongst others) to teach this. Accounts are managed through AD and Azure AD Connect, so every child has a Microsoft account. Therefore I'd strongly argue that we don't need consent for this. There are some grey areas, but IMHO we should try hard to ensure we don't need consent in as many areas as possible.

Hmm I think I'm out of my depth. I've downloaded the schemas from the link and don't really know what to do next. It's only 90 admissions per year and the data inputting isn't my job! I just wanted to make the process better and reduce the opportunities for errors. Moving to collecting the data in a spreadsheet at least means that we avoid the issues with handwriting, missing fields and the data can be copied and pasted. We're going to introduce Parent App Lite once all the pupils are in next term, so at least keeping on top of changes should be improved. I don't have anything to practise on, so it'd need to upload straight to the live system without testing.

So if I was to grab last year's ATFi could extract the schema information and then use it to convert my spreadsheet to an XML in the ATF format? I've never created an XML schema before, but I'm busy reading...

We use Airhead: http://www.airhead.io More flexible than Unify in terms of creating custom tiles and cheaper. Doesn't provision O365 or GSuite, but you can provision then from AD and use those credentials for SSO to Airhead. Edit: for some reason the hyperlink doesn't open from the app on my phone, but the URL is correct if you open it in a browser.

Showing my ignorance, but: what's an ATF? Also, for pupils entering the education system for the first time - where does the upn come from?

Thread necromancy, but... Do you have a guide on how to convert a spreadsheet to ctf format? I want to ensure I capture the data in the correct format to minimise the amount of processing I need to do to the data after it's collected. Thanks in advance.

We've got one that misbehaves sometimes (out of 4 Hitachi UST projectors and 3 standard throw projectors). The hint that the supplier have me was to reset the filter hours when I clean the filter - this does seem to give me a couple of months between problems rather than a couple of hours... I have to admit it was a corner I tended to cut when I do my round cleaning filters. Worth a go if you're not doing it already. It's been back under warranty a couple of times and they replaced a thermal sensor on one occasion. The others I've got installed are slightly more recent models and have been fine. It's could be worth finding out whether the mounts are compatible. I installed them myself (the first one was a pig, but the install quote was about £1200 at the time). The UST projectors have also come down in price a lot - last time I looked it was around the £500 mark. Your projector must be around 5 years old - if you're not paying for another install, that might make replacement a bit more palatable.

All my home machines and quite a few school machines came from there. Next day on-site at home is great [emoji3] but prices don't look nearly as attractive now.... I've bought a few from ICT Direct which have been immaculate and they'll last longer than a consumer model, even after a life in the corporate world.

We're using Spiceworks cloud hosted and they've updated their privacy model and data protection to meet GDPR. It's not the most comprehensive solution, but it's very simple to use and easy to set up. Depending on how you configure it, it could be ITIL compliant. The Manage Engine product also looks good - it's more comprehensive, but more complicated... Pricing is very attractive (free) if you're a small department and looks good value of you're a bit bigger and need to pay.

There was a thread a few weeks ago about this. The upshot was that prevention of reinstallation is down to registry entries. If you remove from the wim, the registry entries aren't created. If you remove during deployment they are. I'm pretty sure it was a post by @Arthur and it also had the required registry entries, so you could still remove from the wim and prevent reinstallion. I'm going to give that a go, as I've found that (with our mostly older machines) removing during deployment is very slow.

There is a fair number of regular cyclists in here, but I'll get you started. Carrera bikes have improved quite a bit from their origins, but Halfords isn't where I'd start if you don't know your bikes. If you read any cycling forums, you'll quickly come across the acronym LBS, which is local bike shop. It doesn't have to be a small independent, but a specialist bike shop gives you a decent chance of being advised by someone who is a cyclist themselves. My initial reaction is that you're asking a lot of a bike; 60 miles on the road will feel like a long way on a mountain bike, however much you spend. However, it is at least capable of it, whereas a road bike would limit you to.... roads. In terms of spec, look for deals on last year's models. If you could find something with hydraulic disc brakes it'd be a significant upgrade on the cable discs on that bike. It's also worth trying the two main types of gear shifters (rapid fire or twist grip). Personally I wouldn't buy a bike with twist grip shifters, but plenty of people swear by them. You should also try a range of brands - most tend to have a "signature shape". Some will have you sitting very upright and others leaning forward more. A bike shop should help you to get comfortable on whatever you end up buying. Also, don't forget to budget for a helmet and lock. If you're riding 50+ miles, you might want to think about padded shorts too!

I must have been unusually lucky then - I've used it half a dozen times over a few years and always had an excellent service. After years of waiting for buses and taking ages to get to the car, it gives a great feeling of happiness to just walk out of the door and watch your car drive up.

As per title. I am preparing a laptop to give to a new member of staff, so it hasn't had updates for a few weeks as it's been in a cupboard. All updates apart from the April cumulative update installed first time, but I kept getting a 0x80070005 for KB4093112. I watched it and I noticed that once it started installing, the "Sophos has detected a threat and moved it to quarantine" message appeared. There wasn't anything in the Sophos quarantine, but I went into services and then manually stopped all of the Sophos services and the update installed successfully. This update successfully installed on my machine which has the same OS version (Windows 10 Education x64 1709). Sophos is up to date on both machines. Any ideas? I'm just slightly concerned that I'll have a batch of machines that don't get the cumulative update and it won't be immediately obvious. Plus I'd rather fix it than go around manually circumventing Sophos. Thanks
