This seems like an area where I am still unclear on what happens when you hold a subject's data because you have a legal basis for processing it, but you also want to use it for "non-mandatory" services. If you're heavily invested in GSuite, it seems likely that you're using Google's services to process his data which you can do without his permission if it's to allow you to fulfil your public duty (to provide an education and the administration/MIS required to support that activity). However, despite the fact you are already using Google to process his data for that, tickets for a school production probably doesn't count as part of the requirement to provide an education. Does anyone think you have a valid claim that school events count as part of our public duty? You should be notifying parents that you're using (insert name of supplier) service to process their data and you could then point to that and say you're not giving any extra information (other than their attendance at an event) - although that might prove even more inflammatory.... That's fine - most of the work is operational and legal requirements need to be matched with capabilities. If the DPO didn't ask, you'd likely end up with unworkable solutions being imposed. That, on the other hand, isn't compliant with the regulations. The analogy is that they wouldn't be able to audit their own finances.

The disadvantage of that is all of the windows 10 apps install on first login for each user, which can make it sllooowww. That's why I get rid of as many as I can before I deploy. YMMV

A thing I've noticed: I imported the install.wim created from the latest version into MDT. There's only one file in the DeploymentShare, but in the workbench there are several OSs listed. I called mine: Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim and listed I have: Windows 10 Education in Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim Windows 10 Education N in Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim Windows 10 Enterprise in Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim Windows 10 Enterprise N in Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim Windows 10 Pro in Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim Windows 10 Pro N in Win10_Edu_x64_1709_01_install.wim Why Microsoft? Why? My workbench wasn't exactly empty and now it's full of stuff I don't want.

I'm deploying Windows 10 and Office 2016 using an MDT task sequence. I've therefore got the option either to put Office updates (in .msp format) in the "Updates" folder of the Office deployment or put CABs in the packages folder. I think I understand both processes, but I can't easily find a way to download a complete set of Office updates in either format. Any advice? @BKGarry where do you get the cumulative updates please? I found this: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4098622/april-2018-updates-for-microsoft-office but is that really all of them? Is everything included or superceded? It doesn't look like remotely enough... Thanks

Sorry, but it's your finance people who are letting you down here. It's fairly unlikely that a supplier will keep giving you service that you're not paying for. We have three lines and I'd only expect BT to be able to tell me about one of them - the main line, supplied by BT. The second is supplied by Virgin and the third is Red Care - a BT line, but not supplied to the school. BT should have records of the Red Care, but shouldn't tell us about its billing as we don't pay the bill. You are not an Openreach customer - by regulation they're not allowed to tell you about the services - they have no contract with the end user. Finance shouldn't be paying for anything that they can't tell you the purpose of. Obviously if it turns out that they're paying BT for all of them, you've got a complaint against BT too.

I'm just revisiting this - thought I was going mad when the image mounted 6 times. I must have left it running while I did something else last time. Last time I used it, 1709 was a fairly new thing. Now that there are a significant number of updates, I'm looking for the best way to deploy updates. Is there a straightforward way to add them into the wim or is it better to add a task in MDT? I have a wsus server if that helps.

(Server 2012R2) Desired end state: All clients and users part of schoolname.internal domain with Azure AD Connect joining them to schoolname.com O365 domain (Server 2016) My plan was to re-image all machines and join to the new domain and then set up Azure AD Connect to replicate/synchronise. However the new server installation has been delayed. Obviously the Easter Break is by far the most convenient time to re-image. Any thoughts from the collective on how straight forward/ unwise it would be to re-image and join to the old domain and then migrate when the new domain is ready? Data migration shouldn't be impacted - I'll leave the teacher machines until migration. I've read about adding a second domain to the forest and then demoting the existing DC when I'm ready. I've also seen that Manage Engine have a free tool. So I've established it's possible - just not sure whether it's a good idea... Thanks

I've had a quote for Azure AD P1 which seemed reasonable and have been told I can either add it to my OVS agreement and cover staff and pupils based on FTE , (in which case I'll lose 4 months and have to pay twice in one financial year) or subscribe separately now for 12 months but only cover staff. Price is the same in either case. Don't know about P2 though.

Depends on the price - it'd need to be significantly cheaper than the convertible Chromebooks to make sense to me.

I'd love a definitive answer to the point @enjay makes. At the minute we don't maintain a separate list for opting out of "marketing". If we send out a school newsletter which is mostly full of "remember to book a parents'evening appointment", "there's an e- safety session next week and please don't park on the zigzag lines", does it count as marketing if it also has diary dates which include the PTA disco? And at what point does it become marketing? If there's an item included? If there's a picture? If it's a separate communication?

The free salamander product specifies that it works with some and O365 - it looks like you only need to pay if you want the bit that controls onsite Active Directory. That's the bit I need, so I haven't looked at the free product, but it sounds like it should do what you need.

I'm going to try the approach @sparkeh suggests. We've already looked at Scholarpack and SIMS InTouch. Does anyone know what their terms are? I'm assuming SIMS is one year as that's what we have for everything else. The added complication (on top of no budget) for us this year is that we're in consultation to amalgamate with our partner junior school which would complete in less than three years.

We're looking at adding more products to our Schoolcomms service and when we got the quote it was pointed out that new contacts AND renewals are now a minimum of three years with 90 days notice. Two reasons for post: firstly to draw it to people's attention - I didn't see the renewal paperwork as it goes to finance, so when asked whether we still needed it, I just said yes. Secondly, is this par for the course now? Three years is a very long time for us to commit...

What magic are you working? I've stripped all but the essential modern apps out (I have camera, photos, store, calculator and 3d paint, but everything else is gone). The "Happy to see you - please wait while we get things ready" crud takes waaay more than 13 secs for us. SSDs, 4GB RAM and modern processors. It's not awful for standard users, but a pain for shared student devices. Suggestions welcome.
