I suspect it's more straightforward to sort for teachers than other staff as they're bound by the professional standards whichever school they're employed by. Unless you have a system which pulls data from SIMS (eg Target Tracker) there's probably significant value in giving them access to SIMS pupil data over the holiday. Most teachers (especially if they're new and keen to make a good impression) will do some preparation over the holidays, so it's not just the inset days. As long as I had a signed AUP and equipment loan form I don't think there's much reason not to give equipment out either. The difficulty with that for us would be getting the old kit back from other staff in time as we don't have any spare.

Depending on the quality/number of lenses you have, there are some high quality options that pass through all of the controls. (Look for metabones) Also if you're talking film SLR and moving to something that's not a full frame DSLR system, you'll get a longer effective focal length. Eg a micro 4:3 system will double the focal length, so that nice little 50mm f1.4 you've got tucked away becomes a lovely little portrait lens [emoji846]

Just in case I've got the wrong end of the stick.... If I could show that a missing/stolen laptop had been encrypted, is there a breach to report? I was working on the assumption that we wouldn't need to do anything. I appreciate that if the staff member admits that they also had an unencrypted USB stick and a big wodge of paper reports in the bag containing the laptop, it'd be different.

I've found smart stubborn in the past - the in place upgrade took over an hour to run. I now use Revo uninstaller when I want to upgrade smart and then reinstall from scratch. It still takes nearly as long as re-imaging if smart is part of your build...

This is the problem isn't it. It's not their money, they don't care. The fine(s) are ineffective against a taxpayer funded school/local authority... Just sayin.... We're not exactly going to get shut down and we don't have any money to pay a fine with.

I'm planning to deploy Eraser to allow staff to easily securely delete files. I extracted the msi using 7zip and have successfully deployed using Group Policy. When testing I noticed that it took ages to delete a relatively small folder. I then checked in the settings and found that the default method for files is Gutmann 35 passes. This is definitely overkill for us and inadvisable since it will mostly be used on Flash Drives or SSDs. I've worked out that the default is controlled by a registry setting and know what I want to change it to. My query is: Can I deploy a registry setting in the same GPO as the software deploy or will it fail as the software might not exist when it attempts to write the registry setting?

Could you check on wherever they sync too? Would save you having to log in to every machine....

The OP is proposing granular consent - it's just putting it all in one form that he's querying. i.e. a single signature, but confirming that you do consent to some of the choices and not to others. As long as you're clear on each item, I can't see any reason in the advice not to have a single consent form. You're not allowed to bury it in amongst terms and conditions or say "I agree to all of the above". A single form is similar to the way it's presented in the SIMS Parent App; there's a single page for all consents you're being asked for, you select which ones you accept, with all set to decline as default, then select save and submit. A single submission, but with an option for consent on each item. It wouldn't be beneficial to the user to have to fill out multiple forms for each organisation.

My first thought was the Unifi APs - we're already on their standard APs, so it would give me an update to AC at the same time. First response from manglement was that they're too expensive, but when they get quotes for normal alarms that might change! SIP tannoy systems is a good call - although a quick search for would suggest they don't cost a whole lot less.

We're not planning to collect opt-in for emergency contacts/ medical care - they're required to allow us to perform our duty to keep the children safe. We'll collect the information in the normal way and issue a privacy notice to explain why we need it, who we'll share it with and how we'll process it. Consents for trips and newsletters and certain use of photos will be collected on the same form, but it will be a tick box. The privacy notice will explain what we'll use it for. Some use of photos will not be optional - we will record it on SIMS to allow us to identify the child and we use them to collect evidence of academic process. We will need consent to use in publicity or on the website or displays.

Can anyone recommend LAN based alarm systems and/or suppliers? We've had an edict that we need to urgently upgrade our lockdown procedures (due to a specific risk). Our alarm system sounders only have a single sound and we need a different sound so that we can immediately identify that we are in a lockdown situation. Obviously the sounders are cheap (a simple bell would do as we have sirens for the alarms and lesson change). Our control panel doesn't have the capacity to control separate sounders, so we'd need a call point and wiring to all of the required locations. It struck me that it might be quicker, simpler and cheaper to install something that uses our existing LAN infrastructure. Thanks

I've told staff that we have two categories of document: Those that contain data that needs to be controlled (eg personal or sensitive (private to the school) Those that don't: essentially lesson plans which don't refer to individuals. Anything in the first category should be protected - we don't have different levels of action. I did this as I thought anything more granular would be too complicated for people to comply with and not worth the effort.

Our DPO has provided templates - essentially the ones in the link in @jke's post, with a couple of suggestions for customisation. However, that page only gives examples for pupils and workforce. I would expect to need a separate notice for parents. There's nothing I can see in the .gov.uk template and the only reference in our customised template is:

You could look at Crashplan: https://www.crashplan.com/ Unlimited storage, unlimited retention, $10 per machine per month. Windows Server OS is listed as supported, so presumably if you get all the data onto one server, you'd only need to pay for one machine. Edit: Or Altaro: https://www.altaro.com/vm-backup/pricing.php More advanced than Crashplan, designed for virtualized environments, variety of prices, but all less than you're currently playing.

Google drive appears as a network share (in Windows Explorer). "Team Drives" and "My Drive" appear as folders in the next level down. You then click on "Team Drives" and will see the ones you have access to - also add a folder in Windows Explorer.

Are there two issues here? 1) Processing pupils' data to use the system to set and monitor homework is to do with providing an education and therefore arguably in the Public Interest. 2) Processing parents' data so that Show My Homework can communicate directly with the parents (even if it's on your behalf). As others have said, it will be down to the school to justify their position whatever decision has been taken.

We exclude cleaners and kitchen staff, but TAs are included in our calculation as they have regular access to computers (even though they don't have one allocated to then individually). We also base it on >200 hours = FTE.

I kept store, but be aware that you need to keep a random background app as well for it to work. Details are on this forum - I'll find the link and post back here. The other one I keep is the Photos app. If you don't, you'll need to provide an alternative or it'll open JPEGs in paint. Photoviewer isn't available by default - it can be "re-enabled" with a reg entry, but I found keeping the app was easier.
