Everything fitted perfectly apart from there being no firewire socket on the mobo. PS. The motherboards also support two/three displays output at the same time which was good for projectors.

We stripped our RM Ones out and fitted with new mobo, ddr3 and SSDs. I think it cost £148 per machine. Also we bought a couple from eBay for 25each and again upgraded them. As you say they are pretty bulletproof. They can't fiddle with the wires, there bolted down and have scratchproof (kind of) screens. The only thing that we have had to replace here and there are PSUs but these are also cheap.

Gp preferences - we set a deny to "%SystemRoot%\System32\mmsys.cpl" for the students group. They can change the volume etc but can't bring up the settings to change the name etc Also renamed them to "Sound Settings" to with a VBS script that ran at startup. Left it enabled for a few weeks to catch all PCs that were maybe not turned on for a while, then we removed it. Can't find the VBS now though sorry.

I run 6 disks on my HP microserver using server 2012 and storage spaces. Speed hasn't been an issue so I stopped looking for a raid card. If your looking at getting another they do crazy cashback offers every now and again. I think I got mine for £140 (ebuyer) and then got £100 cashback from HP.

We have our ZD and all APs trunked for all VLANs that they will use (e.g. byod, guest VLANs). But strangely the default VLAN to each AP isn't trucked. Everything works but we couldn't quite understand why. When we called support they said "whatever you have it set to is correct" even though we to this day can't work out how it is working.

Thank you Lee, after repeated loss of supply so many times with current setup we really wanted to make sure that it doesn't ever go down if we are managing it ourselves. Redundant firewalls and a backup ADSL+ line etc. Is this a hardware/rack solution from Sophos or software that we will host?? Can I drop you a PM after Xmas with our spec/details? Thanks again

Thanks for the suggestions. We were potentially looking at a pair of redundant Cisco firewalls with a lease line and then looking to have the web filtering separately on a VM. This is why we were potentially looking at open source. Would it make sense to instead have one system manage FW and web filtering on the same box? We currently run Sophos AV (also included by county broadband). Is this by any chance included or can be added to the UTM license? Thanks again

Hi , no wouldn't help at all, it's budgeted for the year. So wouldn't make any difference as the total would be the same. Or am I reading it wrong and your saying the total was 4x less because you paid quarterly?

Sounds a fun project. Wouldn't you need 2 x lan cables run anyway? I might be wrong but I thought hdmi over catX would need a dedicated line? Remember encryption if your data is going in the shed..

Hi all, We currently have our broadband provided through the county council. They also manage the schools firewall. Part of the agreement is a serial/licence for a local install of Smoothwall (Not Proxy just web filtering). So, we have Smoothwall installed on a VM purely as an additional layer of web filtering with AD integration etc. We are looking at alternative providers for our broadband next year, in this case it would mean that local SmoothWall install would no longer be licensed. The alternate solution would include a firewall upstream to the web filtering. We have had SmoothWall installed and running for about 7 years and know the product pretty well so would like to keep it. First things first I contacted SmoothWall directly for a cost to licence it ourselves. I nearly fell off my chair, the cost was nearly as much as the broadband supply. Completely out of budget by around 400% So, can i please ask, 1. Can anyone please recommend an alternative product that can replace SmoothWall? (It can be open source or paid as there will be a small budget available for this.) 2. I see many schools on EduGeek use SmoothWall, are you SmoothWall licenses included with your BB supply? I cant believe that anyone (especially a school) would be able to afford the prices quoted? 3. Can anyone please let me know how comparable the Open source Smoothwall alternative is? Is it more than the support? I've had a very quick look at.. untangle, pfsense, squid, websense. But im just unsure if these are as fully featured as Smoothwall? Thanks in advance!

Thanks, They are both internet provider and firewall. We fill out change request for firewall changes that get passed though their firewall when their proxy is used, but have never been able to request that an IP be able to access the web without a proxy being used. Just to confirm, do all devices require proxy settings for all web access (E.g. Google) under SWGfl and you can request that certain devices do not require the proxy details be entered to gain web accesss? That would be ideal!!!! Thanks

Thanks again. Ive asked many years ago, but then they give different levels of internet access by giving 2 different proxy addresses. We were considering putting a pSense install between their supply and the core switch. We might just have to install the local management software on the server but wanted to give the cloud management a good try beforehand.

Does Linux maybe support WPAD to automatically enter the proxy authentication details???

Thanks for the reply. There isn't a firewall issue, its just that all devices require proxy details entered to be able to access the web. For example in IE you are required to add proxy details, on an iPad you need to enter them under wireless settings. Or are you suggesting that they setup a transparent proxy for these APs? that would be great but I don't believe that would be an option from Worcestershire Council.

Hi, We are testing out 5 x Ubiquiti AC access points. These have been setup with a cloud management system. They are all registered in the management system but currently they are showing as Offline. I believe that this is due to the school they are installed requires a proxy and port to access the internet. I'm guessing that the APs are trying to connect to the web to update their details but cant as they have no way out without a proxy. There is always the option of a local cloud key or setting up local management software on the server. But if possible we would like to use the cloud management. We have SSH access to the APs. They have all pulled a lease from DHCP. They appear to be a flavour of Linux. Doh, i had enabled the wrong policy item when locking it down! There's 2 hours wasted...haha Remove Users Folders from Start Menu Hides all folders on the user-specific (top) section of the Start menu. Other items appear, but folders are hidden.

Sorry for the delay Michael, This went on the back burner for a while. What weve found is that for any tile to appear it must also be in the redirected start menu. If any are missing or hidden then the tiles to not show. They also do not return when the links are added back into the start menu. Weve found that if you change the datestamp on the "\\share\start.xml" then the tiles are re-added. New tiles seem to be working well, new tiles appear when the XML is updated, but weve found another problem that I was wondering if ever came up in your testing. Redirected start menu with "Basic - Redirect everyones folders to the same location" works fine. But if we use want different startmenus for different users. "Advanced - Specify locations for various user groups" and specify a group the redirected start menu doesnt show. Even though event viewer shows "Successfully applied policy and redirected folder "Start Menu" to \\server\share\StaffStartMenuW10" Is this something that you maybe also experienced too? Hi, We are looking at the number of Toplogy Change Counts on the network. We dont have any benchmark, but previously we went for 26days without a topolgy change. Quick question, by default AUTO-EDGE is enabled on all switches. We have been advised to set EDGE on all end/edge devices. From looking at the "show spanning-tree" on every switch that we have monitored all edge devices have EDGE set to ON automatically. Can anyone please confirm, if we have AUTO-EDGE enabled, do we not have to manually enable edge on (command: spanning-tree admin-edge-port) each edge port? Would there be any benefit for setting edge manually? I know with auto-edge it checks for 3 secs for BPDUs? Thanks Tim
