I've been asked to look into a system to send text messages home to parents. I've never really researched it (as we only got phone signal round here a couple of years ago!) So basically what do you use, how much does it cost and would you recommend it?

oooh sorry misread your OP - you've still got a C1000 - wow! we got one of those in 2001 as our first colour laser errr no, it won't fit I can recommend however, having 8 of them, the C1100N as a replacement (and they're only just over £200 - compatible toner cheap as chips too). I've recently started re-chipping photoconductors on ours, too (£20 rather than £160) and they seem fine so far.

Ah, that's the C1100N - you could always get a C1100 to rip apart for spares (like a half-price fuser) and just chuck out the bits you don't need? that's what we've been known to do in situations like that....

They can on XP. They can on Vista too as long as the machine has "seen" a printer of the same type beforehand and therefore doesn't require a driver install (so I run all the scripts before imaging). 7 - not sure, haven't tried yet, but probably as Vista??

There's many ways of doing it; I go with the simplest one (IMHO): I have a share on a server containing batch files (one for each room) containing the following (substitute your own server and printer name): RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /in /n "\\Cpsappsrv1\room2_colour" to connect a printer, and RUNDLL32 PRINTUI.DLL,PrintUIEntry /y /n "\\Cpsappsrv1\room2_colour" to set the default printer. Note that these are CaSe SeNsItIvE! Then I set a shortcut in the (all users) startup group of the machine, when it's deployed after being imaged (or just put it in the image), pointing to the correct file for the room it's in. Simples!

I'm having another exploratory foray into Ubuntu as a possible alternative to Windows for some of our workstations, as I'm looking into the feasibility of buying out of our MS School agreement next summer. I installed Ubuntu a while ago and it looks like it could be a go-er. but one thing's puzzling me: I can't get ip addresses of internal servers to resolve. Anything outside the school works fine (i've put the LEA proxy in as the network proxy) and software centre etc is fine, ie I can ping bbc.co.uk but not cpsfilesrv1 (a server on the network). Edit: adding 10.105.* (covering our internal range) to the "ignored hosts" list in the network proxy bit has no effect - is there something else I should be putting in there? DNS seems to be working fine for Windows workstations, just not Ubuntu. Terminal Server Client won't connect with a server name, but will happily with an IP address. Oddly, "Places-Connect To Server" DOES work with server names:confused: DNS security allows "ANONYMOUS LOGIN" read access and It's a vanilla Windows 2003 Network (for now)... any suggestions where to look (at either end)?

You haven't got a dodgey batch of PSUs have you? I've seen that kind of behaviour caused by that in the past... MIght be interesting to change the PSU in a couple and see if it fixes them??
