Sorted it - you have to do a specific transaction log backup immediately before truncating the LDF

I've got a SQL 2005 server (for Sage mainly); I'm pretty sure I've set up the backup job correctly, followed by a shrink database task, but the ldfs are still 400MB+ This is the SQL generated by the shrink task - any ideas why the logs aren't shrinking each time? I didn't run it - it's ye olde standard telephone cable - behind the tiles in the kitchen....

Cable, CABLE! you must be joking - we had to wait till digital switchover last year (iirc) to get freeview (and not all of that - 8 channels woo!)

The distance between the main socket - this is the test socket remember (no faceplate) - and your EXT1 socket is approx 10m - wouldn't that just act as an aerial and pick up all sorts of interference and really screw things up?

This, I must admit, is the part of this that's REALLY got me baffled - more interference from more traffic = connection possible - eh?!

Yeah, the first filter is in the test socket anyway and i've tried disconnecting each of the branches in turn - I'll give it one more go tonight with everything out but the router then demand a visit - thanks all for helping me get my thoughts straight!

Ok, so possibly too many filters... that may explain the slightly wooly sound on the handset (so might the fact that my partner's daughter once dropped it in the loo - don't ask!), but could that cause the DSL problem? surely too many filters are better than too few - and it's worked fine from the Wednesday in half term till yesterdayish?

I read somewhere that as the filters work on impedence you need one on everything - even an extension... is that not the case?

I'm having ongoing issues with my home broadband (from TalkTalk). Before I ring them up (again) and end up talking to a script monkey (again), possibly ending up with a chargeable home visit, I'll ask here first to check all's well our end This is the current setup - this has been rock solid stable for 3 weeks at 2Mb (which is fine as it's what I was told to expect - before that we had a flaky 512k which suddenly went to a stable 2Mb after a "fault" (read: upgrade that they forgot to tell us about:rolleyes:)) until Saturday when the DSL started dropping out sporadically, and now it won't connect at all. Odd thing is that if you make a call on the landline, it does connect, and work for a few minutes, which is maddening if you're ringing their helpdesk as it's, well, working at the time. Couple of things to note: The old router (access point) is there because a couple of our computermabobs won't support WPA2 and the TalkTalk router won't support anything else - it's on a different channel and ssid and the wireless bits are working fine. I've plugged a filter straight in the test socket as the numpty who lived in the house before (partner's ex) had wired an extension into the back of the faceplate, which obviously needs filtering. Long story short - their end or mine?

We'd be interested too; we've got LUNS coming to do a site survey on Friday to see if they offer anything cheaper than CLEO

after asking the same question here: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-7/71980-32-64-bit.html I've gone with 32bit for most network workstations, so far so good, but I've put 64bit on mine.... Total PITA printing to network printers (it doesn't, as they don't all have x64 drivers and there's no backwards compatability), so I have a VM running my old 32 bit XP workstation install for when things get sticky)

The switch at the middle of our network - the one with all the servers, fibre modules to other cabs etc. in it died this morning (thank goodness it's not term time!). The one that's failed is a Netgear FSM726 that was put in by the company that used to support us, though to the best of my knowledge it was never configured to do anything over and above, well, switch. We don't use VLans or anything like that, so can I get away with replacing it with an unmanaged one and some media convertors? at this stage I can't see why not, but I am more than prepared to be corrected.

We thend to use this: Creative Inspire A220 Speakers - Aria Technology kind of thing - any Creative with a subwoofer always seems to give surprisingly good sound that's easilly adequate for all our rooms, even the big science labs.
