Would anyone out there care to venture a guess as to why our stage lighting rig has been declared "unsatisfactory" due to two disused oil tanks in the basement at least 50 yards away not being earth bonded? the installation's been in for 51 years without issue, by the way... Just seems bizzare

I'm having a problem with an HP1018 attached to a "printserver" (read: older computer that does nothing but share the printer out) in the school office. It used to work fine in exactly that configuration but recently has been problematic. All involved machines are XP pro. Symptoms: # attempting to install the printer on a client machine by start | run \\recep_printserver and then double clicking on the shared printer fails with "Operation could not be completed. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly, or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server." # Installing it using Start | Printers and faxes | add printer and browsing for it works succesfully, but..... # When users print to the printer, nothing happens until the spooler service on the printserver is restarted - at which point the jobs all print off in a glut, but new jobs still hang around until the spooler service is restarted again. It's doing my head in - I've been a NM for over 10 years and I can't get this damn printer to share - seriously starting to doubt my own sanity! I've tried the old driver that used to work, the newest one from HP, Firewall is off, I even reimaged the printserver machine and started again! I'm seriously considering throwing the whole kaboodle into the skip (sorry, press F5, into the pile for the approved WEEE recycling company:rolleyes:) and sticking an epson C1100N in like the rest of the school!

Has anyone come across a simple (Windows Movie Maker type of thing), open source video editing program that they'd like to recommend? Reason I ask is that we're looking to give students homework involving making a simple video, and we don't want to trip up over the different versions of Movie Maker in the various different versions of Windows. We'd rather have a standard one that they can download and install from the VLE, then bring into school and open no problem. Many thanks in advance!

You may also have to buy your own license if the LEA won't continue letting you use theirs...

I'm guessing many on here, like me, get roped in to do tech for the School production? I, in fact used to be a tech ( a proper one not an IT one) in a couple of local theatres, but that was 10 years ago and the theatres were 30 years out of date! After doing a big hire-in of kit from Whitelight (absolutely first class company to deal with - not a scratch or fingerprint on anything) for "We will Rock You" last year, we're looking at starting to buy some more bits of our own - and we're hoping to start with followspots. Now then, both the theatres I worked in had these: Strand Archive - Patt.293 and Patt.294 but they literally went out with the ark (not arc; they're tungsten:nerd:) and I can't get hold of any. I have, however, found a site selling used lighting kit for a reasonable price; all of the following are on at the same price and I wondered if anyone had any experiences with any of them and would be able to comment: Cantata Followspot Kit | usedlighting.co.uk CCT Freedom Followspot | usedlighting.co.uk ETC Source 4 Followspot 10 Deg | usedlighting.co.uk We hired Source 4's from Whitelight last year and (after the Strands I'd used before) they seemed to be the dogs whatsits - but I'm interested in what others think.

Can I just tie this thread off by recording that I shoved A-N-other SATA disk in (actually a 1TB as it was the smallest available from our suppliers pronto) and it's rebuilt fine thanks all

Can I just clarify that you can do that (stick a normal seagate in the caddy that the failed disk's in) and hot swap it - I'm guessing that any new SATA disk (within reason) over the size of the failed one will do? Acer don't put anything on the disks to initialise or identify them then when they supply them? If anyone's actually done this (A) at all or (B) on an altos, please post it and it would help my blood pressure no end!

Can anyone help me out with a replacement for a 75Gb SATA Hard drive which has just gone pop in one of our Acer Altos G540 servers? (the finance server, and we became an academy today - eek!) Current model is a ST380815AS. Quotes or suggestions ASAP please - I need to order tomorrow!

One of our 3 DCs is becoming overworked by it's other duties and to relieve the situation I want to stop it being a DC - what I'm not certain of is what the consequences may be. The other 2 DCs are more than capable of servicing the logons etc, but what I'm not so sure of is what happens to the users (not many as it's the hols and only 1 in 3 will have been logged in by that server anyway) and computers that have been authenticated by that DC. Long story short - can I just uninstall AD from this server and will the rest just take over? it doesn't have any of the FSMO roles or anything, it's just a DC (2003 R2)

IIRC there was a clause in the (old) School Agreement that limited price increases year-on-year; maybe someone could check if that's in EES too?

It'll run on most things that would be up to spec to regularly run SIMS - it's just a bit jerky flipping graphs over.

Yup - falls on it's @r5e by not being able to do behaviour and achievement points between dates... (Ok I suppose I could do an excel macro report to count up the points between dates then import them into an AM aspect - but come on!)

I'm after recommendations for a printer - but not just any printer - essential criteria are as follows: 1. Prints Printable CDs and DVDs 2. Compatible (as opposed to OEM) ink (or toner?!) easily available to keep operating costs right down. 3. Still in production! Any suggestions to replace the ageing Epson R265 which is almost completely worn out?

It's going soon - you can now (in the current release) print T4-styley timetables (with week 2 below Wk1) from the reports menu of SIMS .Net - and it works without the bit of T4 that did it previously but was 16-bit so didn't work on 64-bit Windows

Not important at all but I thought I'd mention it - the time on the "recent posts" is showing in GMT, an hour behind the time shown on the posts in the threads... [/pedantic_mode]

We've got all our workstations and servers set up to set their time from one of our servers - trouble is, it's now about five minutes fast; I suspect that the time source it is configured to use may be defunct. Sorting the source out is not really the issue; what worries me is what happens to SQL servers and AD if I suddenly set the clock right:eek:? Is it a DoItInTheHolidaysWithThemPoweredOffJustInCase job or will they cope ok with seeing the same five minutes of history twice?

This might also be a good time to request the database re-index patch from whoever you get your SIMS support from; that should make all your reporting activities run much faster.
