I've got one of those, too - a 1998 Suzuki Vitara - most of it built with bits from the original design in 1986:cool: It gets me to work and back whatever the weather (untreated roads around here), does the job and I know how it works. It costs pennies to fix because I can get at everything with a socket set, most of it (including an oil change) from under the bonnet - there's that much space!). The point: Like my vitara, DsAdd etc work for me. I understand it, and when I keep the batchfiles™ I can see what I did if I screw up. In much the same way that I don't need a device to buzz my backside when I cross the white line without the indicator on, I've never needed to "to reset the password of every user whose username ends with "aa" but is not in the "Admin" OU." when I do, you'll probably find a thread on here with me asking how to use powershell

edit: This is on Server 2003R2 - I don't see why it wouldn't work on 2008 though... /edit I export a list of users - here it's initials and their UPN (unique identification number), which I then use excel to calculate their username (which is their initials and a portion of the UPN). Put them all on one line with a "paste special" then save as a CSV. You could, of course do it all from the command prompt but with for loops that size I prefer to have the code handy just in case!! PS. Just be careful, those AD locations are, unusually for M$, CaSe SeNsItIve! (that took a bit of troubleshooting a while back I tell you:))

I was just about to start a thread related to this - but I'll resurrect this one instead. The problem will be that APE doesn't appear to be well designed for networks as it seems to need access to "my documents" :mad:which is part of the profile. without that, it's REALLY unstable to the point of unusable. This was proved when a member of staff tried to use it on a school laptop she'd taken home - complete fail with the standard settings (redirected my documents for staff), but fine when redirection was removed. Whilst we aren't quite as screwed down as the OP, we do have my documents redirected to a folder named "No Entry" that the pupils don't have access to, to force them to save on their Z: drives (and hence avoid "sir I've lost my work" which happened all the time when my docs was available to them). I've been through all the settings I can find in APE, but can't seem to stop this behaviour. Is it possible I wonder? I really don't want to enable my documents again just for this one program as it's a whole can of worms when people don't look where they're saving. Maybe it's possible to set the GPO so that if a user is on a machine with APE (it's only in one room) then their my documents isn't redirected?? I'll do some digging but if anyone can help with that it'd be much appreciated.

Arising from this thread: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/internet-related-filtering-firewall/68825-amazon-kindle.html , in which I've been working on a way of getting devices that can't accept a proxy server setting (and that will only accept wireless connections with DHCP (Android 2.1 on an E-Pad)) working in school, I've set up a Smoothwall Express box as a transparent proxy. This is in a feasibility study / proof of concept / evaluating devices type of scenario rather than wanting anything large scale for now. It seems to work OK, but as I've never used SW before, I'd be grateful of confirmation from those that have that I'm not doing anything silly. It's configured as follows: Red - given a static IP in our normal school range as assigned by our RBC (10.105.xxx.xxx) Green - assigned 192.168.0.1 and (Physically) connected straight to an unmanaged wireless access point I had lying around 192.168.0.2 (independant of the main Ruckus wireless in school, on channel 2, different SSID, and setup to only allow MAC addresses I specify). DHCP is ON, giving out 192.168.0.3 to 192.168.0.254 Web Proxy is ON, in transparent mode, upstreaming to the RBC proxy. I'm nervous about the DHCP bit - can someone reassure me that it's not going to start sending out duff addresses to the school network is it?

Well, that's working now (tried on a physical machine instead - less to go wrong) so the Kindles should now be ok in school not an unnaceptable security hole either as you'd need (1) access to the network settings (which the pupils don't have) and (2) knowledge of what the IP settings need to be (which they won't). And anyway it's only upstreaming to the RBC filtered feed. Chuffed as. Now... the E-Pad....

I'll let you know if I get it working on the e-pad! that's android 2.1

Right, I've set smoothwall up on a VM, ticked the "transparent" option and it's working (via windows and ubuntu) if I tell the machines where it is in the proxy settings. What do I need to do to make it work with no proxy settings? do I set the "default gateway" in the network settings to point to it? (that doesn't seem to work)

Quick question: Do Kindles work through proxy servers? Has anyone actually used them? Our library are after some but I need to confirm if they'll be able to access the internet in school first!

You can have mine if you like - it's a bit clunky but works for us! The login scripts call a batch file containing: (\\argus\whoswhere is just a normal server share, everyone has full control, so you might want to hide the share if you use this) call \\argus\whoswhere\getinfo.bat >> \\argus\whoswhere2\loginlog.txt which calls a second batch file, getinfo.bat and appends the output to loginlog.txt: @echo off echo %computername%,%date%,%time%,%username% I then open loginlog.txt with excel using "get external data" and can filter it by username, machine etc. Simples I know, but it works!

We've started a policy whereby the last person logged in gets charged *unless* they show any damaged / missing mice, keyboards etc. to their teacher before they log in. Seems to work, we record logins too.

Ok, we're talking the old version of photoshop we run here here, 6.0.1 AMD Phemom x4 processors, 4GB ram and hundreds of gigs of HDD free, Nvidia G-force 220, running XP Pro 32bit. Randomly, and only with certain colours:confused:, the following sequence causes photoshop to crash: Select a small area with the magic wand tool Fill with the paint bucket tool [crunch] "Adobe photoshop has encountered a problem and needs to close, We are sorry for the inconvenience" Same HDD image on the lower spec machines (Athlon X2, 2GB Ram, Onboard graphics) is fine... picking another colour is fine.... using the paintbrush tool with the same colour is fine. I've tried reinstalling Photoshop and compatibility mode - and it doesn't matter who's logged in as I've replicated it on my (administrator access) account. Rapidly running out of ideas here:( - short of installing 7:mad: or vista:rolleyes:
