Hmmm I'm not sure either which is why I posted here... if it is allowed it could save hundreds when we replace a computer room this summer...

I've just seen this for sale: Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 64Bit English 1pk CD/DVD OEM (CCQ-00128) - dabs.com (Microsoft Windows Home Server 2011 64Bit English 1pk CD/DVD OEM Mfr#: CCQ-00128) - it's only £33 which is the cheapest Windows license I've seen for some time. Short version: Can I use this to license a PC under EES? Long Version: EES gives us *upgrade* licenses for all our PCs to Windows 7 (or XP)* but there has to be a "base" (OEM, retail etc.) license to upgrade from - you can't just buy a PC with no OS license and use it under EES. I'm just wondering if the above product can be used as a base license.

I just thought I'd update the thread as I've found an excellent live CD that does EXACTLY what we want straight out of the box and may well be of use to others: http://www.bandshed.net/AVLinux.html I can't believe something that good can be free! I'm also looking a dual booting Ubuntu Studio in one of the computer rooms as that looks promising too. http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntustudio/releases/11.10/release/

To take a slightly different viewpoint, and play devil's advocate a little, depending upon the age of the pupils involved I would consider there to be a potentially bigger duty of care issue if staff can't access pupil filestores. Say they're storing bomb making info or something - the more people that have the potential to find it the better, surely?

our AUP also states that use of the school computers, network etc is only permitted for schoolwork... so there shouldn't be any personal data in there anyway...

Part of our AUP states that staff can view any files stored on personal filestores - the pupils sign this at the beginning of each year and there's a copy online for parents. Personally, I don't see it as any different to reading what a pupil's written in their excersise book.

Yup, we do this - but rather than a mapped drive letter I've just put shortcuts to the relevant folders' UNC paths in the staff drive. Don't forget to modify the NTFS permissions on the student folders to give teachers READ ONLY access otherwise that's a whole other can of worms!*

I've been looking at making video editing universally accessible. Background: As more and more staff are wanting, rightly IMHO, to allow pupils to use modern technologies to produce work rather than everything being done on pen and paper, I've been looking at ways of ensuring that videos can be edited at home or in school - which obviously means that the software has to be compatible. Windows movie maker in XP is fine for the job, but dissapears in certain versions (including "Business" which we have in school) of Windows Vista and 7, and whatever it was replaced with in other versions isn't compatible with Movie Maker in XP. We have Adobe Premiere Elements and Serif Movieplus in school, too, but neither can be used by pupils at home, and Premiere in particular is horribly unstable in general and not really suited to a network environment as it insists on using things like "My documents" but doesn't like it when they're redirected. We've also tried Wax, which is open source so we can distribute it for the pupils to install at home, but that's not the most stable thing in the world either and is very flaky, to the point of not being usable on a whole-class scale. We've also had complaints along the lines of "my home computer (isn't fast enough / is too full / now has viruses because of your installer (which I can't believe - Sophos in paranoid mode couldn't find any in the installer)). Skip to here if you get bored with the background: The most "fit for purpose" video editor I've seen is "OpenShot", from the Ubuntu Software Centre. I've dipped my toe in the water with Ubuntu and know my way around it, but I've never really thought, until now, of providing it as a dual boot option in a classroom.* So... Can you "image" it? in the same / similar way to Windows Sysprep? just tell me where to look! or what's the options for deploying to a roomful? Also, I've been trying to create a LiveCD with Openshot ready installed (so that pupils, at home, can just boot off the CD rather than installing anything, and save their work to a pen drive or the VLE) but once I get to the part of UCK where you add packages it can't find a package manager... at which point I'm stuck. Any help or suggestions - with any of it - will be greatly appreciated!

The problem is that you can't (AFAIK) transparently proxy HTTPS which is what they need to connect to their homeworld (same reason Android Market wouldn't work on a device that didn't support proxy settings) . The Optoma DS311 projectors I put in just over a year ago are dropping like flies - they keep losing colour sync and going psychedelic - so I'm looking for other options that give us what the Optoma's do: BASIC (read "consumable"!), bright classroom projectors. Criteria: At least 2100 lumens no more than £240 each resolution: at least SVGA Inputs: vga and composite 6000 hour lamp life Any suggestions?

Is this on all workstations? can you log in on the server? Is the SIMS.ini (in c:\windows) pointing to the right place on its "SIMSSetupsDirectory" line?

Does anyone know how to get the keyboard off an acer travelmate 5742? (Acer ACER TRAVELMATE TM5742 15.6 INCH CORE i3 370 2GB 250GB (LX.TZ903.074) - dabs.com) I can't see any other way than taking the entire top cover (touch pad and all) off as it's all one piece... I've now removed all the screws from the back but there's one bit of the damn'd thing that still won't shift (the bit above the VGA and LAN connectors)! I think I may have missed something...

Windows CD is in it right now, DNS and AD records removed. let's see what it thinks of the stone age!

They were only in doing the annual check for the rig so the whole school was, thankfully, beyond their remit.
