Smart do a wireless tablet, it's a rebadged Wacom. I'm not sure if the smart version has a different firmware. It might be easier to start cheap and get him a wireless mouse. EDIT: How about a VNC client, nice and cheap.. EDITEDIT: Or tape his board pen to a broom stick.

We probably have about 15 of them. I can only think of one failure in the last 4 years. The only big issue is they have a little button labelled 'Monitor M/D' which mutes them. This does cause some confusion.

I don't think you'll find any UK school who have a tech for every IT suite. We have 6 suites for generally use (IT teaching and other subjects). We also have a 28 machine suite in our Design Technology block and 20 machines in our music department. Also computers in every class room used with interactive whiteboard. We have a team of three. Urgent calls tend to come in via phone or by a runner sent by a teacher (4 of the IT suites are very near the IT support office). Less urgent stuff is reported via a helpdesk system. At the end of the day you need to be asking questions about any teacher who sets a task that they're not capable of completing them selves. Why should this be different just because they're using ICT.

Physical servers are local place names. When we went virtual I changed to functional names, it would have got silly otherwise. At my first school the servers were called Daisy & Buttercup.

There's probably an easier way. But if you fire up reg edit, you'll be able to look through the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT section of the registry. Make the alterations on one machine, test it. You can then export a reg file, use Regedit's command line options (Lookie Lookie) to incorporate importing the reg file into a startup script.

I seem to manage to end up with a system drive that isn't C every time I rebuild my home PC. I theory it's fine. But there's always something that won't work. Bin it and start again, trying to get by with the wrong drive letter tends to end up a little less messy then changing it to C.

You'll also probably lose the ability to adjust aperture, unless there's a control for aperture in the actual lens (which I don't think there will be on an EOS lens). This is a bigger problem then you might imagine. In a normal setup lenses remain wide open (at their lowest F number) until a shot is taken. When I bought some really cheap extension tubes for my Nikon I discovered the lens stops right down (goes to the highest F number) with the tubes attached. You can literately see nothing in the view finder. If you want to try adaptors, you might want to consider one that uses an older mount. If you go for M42 or OM all the lenses should have aperture rings, and they'll be a lot cheaper.

You are meant to purchase a licence from Smart if you want to do that.

Some do, just bare in mind that RAW files are not standardised, they don't just vary between makes, they even vary between different models. If you already have software check it's compatible with your camera. EDIT: And also if you haven't already go and try a few cameras. Ergonomics are a big feature of dSLRs, you want to make sure you get something that sits well in the hand. You might even find that a more substantial used camera suits to better then a cheaper new one.
