Hi Guys, I am starting to look at allowing remote access for certain users. Just wondering if there are any free or cheap ways of doing it? We are on Server 2003 for our cc4 network. We do have server 2008 on our VLE server. I've seen people mentioning VPN's and terminal services but not sure what advantages/disadvantages each gives. Any help would be great thanks.

Hi Guys, Just wondering if anyone that has a virtual network could answer these questions: 1. We currently renew our physical servers every 3 years. How often would you need to (or do you) renew your virtual setup and is it just the hypervisor servers you would renew or the SAN aswell. 2. Do you keep your PC's longer than three years on your virtual network? Thanks

Hi For some reason easylink has decided to stop allowing connections. We gave up with the official easylink way as it wouldn't work. We now use net drive for windows computers and on macs just connecting to the server. This has been working great up until the other day when it just started refusing connections with no changes on our end. My knowledge of easylink is fairly thin on the ground. ANyone know how to either restart it (if it has a service) or any recommendations for a fix? Cheers

Sorry forgive my ignorance. Are you able to access RMMC from a remote site with HAP? Thanks -

I would also be very interested in this working with net sweeper. Thanks -
Hi yes, the solution that worked for me was. 1. Map the sims drive to the machine. 2. Create a folder called SIMS on the C: of the laptop. 3. Apply the sims groups to the machine in AD. 4. Run the simsinst.exe and change the settings to how your sims install is set up. E.g. which drives you have sims on. 5. Let it finish and away you go. I have only tried it on a local profile. Ran out of time to try it with a network one but will let you know how it goes monday morning.

Hi Worked a dream. Cheers. -
Hi We are having major problems with our web filter / firewall run by the council. I need to urgently add a trusted site for all users on our site. Does anyone know how to do this in the RMMC? Thanks Tom

Hi In CC4 you can set up AUP's that users have to accept before they login. I have had an AUP run and when i go to specific users it shows they accepted it and when. Is there a way to print off this information e.g. a summary of all teaching staff showing they have all accepted the AUP? Thanks

Display RSS feed on facebook
tj2419 replied to tj2419's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Why do some of the most basic solutions not occur until someone else points them out Cheers -
Hi Is there a way to display our schools RSS feed on Facebook? Either as posts or something similar? We have a VLE that we update with notices and we would like to have it automatically update a school profile on Facebook. Thanks

We are thinking about it, but weighing up all the options first. We would only move if there was a fear benefit to students and staff.

How would you do it? I am in the planning stage for implementing a virtual network. We currently have 6/7 servers. They are mainly server 2003 so I would be looking to upgrade to server 2008 R2. 1 x admin (which runs our MIS) 3 x curriculum (User accounts and file storage) 1 x VLE Server (Moodle) 1 x test server 1 x Exchange 2010 (Soon to be, just installing and setting up now) We have around 400 desktops and 80 laptops. From reading these forums a decent setup would be one physical DC and 2 virtual servers (clustered & both DC’s) and a SAN. This would allow for a failure on any of the servers and the network would carry on running using either VMware or Hyper-V. VMware is looking like my preferred solution but this is purely personal preference. QUESTIONS 1. Did any of you have to upgrade your switches / network backbone prior to virtualizing. Our switches are probably at least 5 years old and having a current issue with switches crashing when running large backups across the network using backup exec with a backup server at the opposite end of the school. 1a. What speed switches, type of cabling, bandwidth do you use on your virtual network? 2. Would you go for one physical DC and 2 virtual servers (both DC’s) and a SAN? Or would you approach it differently? 3. How long do you keep your desktops? We currently refresh most after 3 years but I was thinking we could probably get 5-6 years out of them virtualized as the demand on the actual desktop is less. 4. How do you know what spec servers to get for a virtual setup? I know enough about virtualisation but want peoples opinions and experience of setting it up and helping to draw together a plan. Thanks

Virtualisation meeting - What should i ask? - What's your experience?
tj2419 replied to tj2419's topic in Wired Networks
Both. We have some money left and i would be looking at virtualising the servers for the obvious benefits of failover, energy consumption and overall speed of recovery if something goes wrong. Then also saving money on replacing the desktops (currently done every 3 years) if they were used more as thin clients. -
Hi I am just at the beginning of planning the migration of our school network to a virtualised solution. We are a RM CC4 network and RM have arranged a meeting with myself and my technicians about virtualisation. My question is are there anythings i should really be finding out from them? Any key questions i should ask? Is there anything you discovered when moving from a physical to a virtual network? Did you need to upgrade switches / cabling? Basically after anyones experiences of moving to a virtual network and what to look out for, what to avoid and what i would need to find out, any unexpected problems that popped up or how you would do things differently in hindsight etc. Thanks (I know i'm not asking much )
