At the moment I have stuck a new disk into the machine to try that out, because at least in my mind (not always the realms of possibility) I think the image may be writing to a bad disk in the same place over and over possibly ! I also forgot to add that in choosing not to install office in the build, I was still unable to install it into the machine afterwards as well yesterday, no matter what I try the installer just plain crashed out, even after rebooting the machine.

The error is still evident on the machine here, even after enabling the installation of updates, MS Office failing with Error 30088

Hello, No, the base image never had Office 2007/Trials at all, it was done by my line manager on a fresh base image of Windows 7 Ent 64 and built up from there with nothing much on it, almost all software other than Office now is installed by GPO after the base OS and Office App installation, none of the software installed in as part of the build has anything like word/powerpoint viewer either, the image for Office 2010 and Win 7 64 SP1 has come straight off the ISOs on the MS Licensing Website as well. It is a horrible strange problem going on here.

This is why flat "Great Firewall" type filtering doesn't work, my son is nearly one so its miles off for me as the wife and I am not a fan of him using anything electronic at a young age anyway, but when it does come ill be looking at filtering software and will be actively involved in anything he does on these devices and I don't think I fancy my ISP blocking anything on my behalf, especially given that it shows how unintelligent the filtering is. Only other thing I am thinking is at some point there will be an assumption that your up to no good really if you opt-out of this filtering as far as your ISP are concerned, especially if they want to block things like file sharing and torrenting as part of what was supposed to be "Pornography/Adult Material" blocking

Thats not much to go by comparative to your own experiences I think, mine tend to show the opposite in terms of reliability, from my work and personal, one batch of stones here from 2009 has good old Hitachi Deathstars in them that are slowly being replaced due to disk deaths and the good old mechanical clanking of death and pretty much any Western Digital disk I have ever had has about 4/5 years of life before suddenly developing read errors and/or going bang, whereas I have yet to have a Seagate go bang on me, only ones replaced here have been lowly 40gb ones in old machines and their still going.

yeah, that bit was in place earlier from our other builds when I checked, we just had it turned off in this image for some reason that I cant remember. I have kicked off one of these "refusing" machines now overnight and will check it first thing tomorrow when I am in work.

I see on their forums its gone down like a lead balloon, couldn't really expect otherwise though when they pull the plug with Zero warning of it happening, at least I can connect to my home machine with Teamviewer, as thankfully we have a decent RDP setup for me and my line manager and a web portal that lets anyone else in to work online as they need.

Looks a bit like my dads knackered brake disks from a recent trip to the garage, though not quite as worn as that disk thats for sure

We do use a WSUS server on site for handling our updates, its set in GPO to update on a weekly sweep (though we obviously vet the updates before allowing them through) AV tends to be one of the final things that gets added on at final rebuild boot by GPO, so that goes on after the build usually, it doesnt install the kaspersky by any other means as its set by our LEA that program and its scripted installation. I have tried enabling pre and post update installation now as I am sat in our server room pondering how exactly to fix this and prevent it happening again.

Looking at the Task Sequence in there, No it isnt running windows update (Pre-Application Installation) as that is greyed out currently on there. Edit : Also post application update is greyed out too on it.

Hello all, I am having a somewhat strange issue with MDT at the moment, in that our system which has worked fine for about 2 years is now playing us up, its carrying out the reimage of a machine to our 64 bit image without any fuss and everything in the build is being imported across (we are mid rollout of our 64 bit image site wide and we have had no issues whatsoever since we started in September until now), even the GPO based application installations are happening without a problem during the build, the only thing thats not installing now is our Office 2010 32 bit installation, its been setup as an application with the MDT and has gone on fine with the all reimaged machines until now, only now its decided that it plain out is refusing to play ball at all with two of the 4 machines I have recently reimaged last week. 2 of the machines both failed to install MDT with the following problem :- which is not a particularly helpful problem, as it states that "An unknown error has occured". As far as testing has gone, I have rebooted all of our servers in this, the MDT server and our main DHCP/fileserver, I have rebooted all of the switching to that area from our main switch and back, I have ensured that I have cleaned the disk out using diskpart each time on the target machine I have now moved everything back to the office here and even on a different physical part of the network the machine is giving us the same issue and not installing office, its quite infuriating as two of the 4 reimages have gone fine with no issues whatsoever. I just came upon this office error message when it has a failure to install right in front of me and its given us this equally awful to solve information:- I have checked and this file is in place and has never been touched to my knowledge since their original creation from the Office 2010 CD and it has gone on to all machines without any issues on our 64 bit build until now where it refuses to install at all onto these two machines. Any help or suggestions are welcome

I havent had the email, but I can see that this is probably tied in with me being unable to log in to my machine remotely the last week using logmein, at least teamviewer works on both windows and linux, so at least I will unify it to just one client now then looking at this.

thats a fair point, I myself am guilty of flitting between multiple browsers here, I find that sometimes Chrome will have difficulties handling websites so I switch to Mozilla for a while before returning, just I think web based stuff by the big companies seems to work well regardless of browser - Google Docs works on all, even Apples iWork Beta is decent, though MS is a bit flaky imo with non-IE browsers I find. I would like Linux to go a little more "mainstream" for the average end user, which is quite a bit of hesitant thing to say I admit, I would rather stuff works without having to mess about with configs or tools like WINE, though I get that is a big part of the whole Linux ethos as it stands at the moment, though I do hope it will evolve with the times and become even more widely used.

RT wont work on windows 7 / 8 Pro versions anyway, its ARM architecture not x86/x64 based.

I could see that coming funny enough, dual booting devices is just not that attractive an option for non-technical people I think. I like Ubuntu and Linux in general, I am a user of it on my home desktop, it provides everything I want out of an OS and is much more robust against AV/Malware attacks and all the horrible nasty stuff that windows attracts and lets slip in if you dont patch your system up constantly, but dual booting is a pain and needs to be the thing that is gone from Linux, but it wont happen without companies en masse getting onboard and looking at making a client for Linux for their programs or being approached with that view by people like Canonical, Valve was truly a massive thing for Linux I felt, even though I know some argue that it flies in the wrong direction against the FOSS platform and what it stands for, but people are free to use or not use what they want. At least now more things like office suites and google programs are all web based to be truly inter-platform experiences, perhaps that's where the eliminating the need for dual booting lies by everything being web based !

A waste of cash, but its gone passed shocking these days for me with our MPs, I dont even think that picture looks anything at all like Diane Abbott. It just sickens me that were bearing the brunt of cuts here, with horrible budget recommendations and there is such blatant swindling and p*ss taking going on with public money everywhere.

When I started here it was Seton Assetguard, which was pretty horrible as it was basically just an msaccess database with a front end and it was quite cumbersome program wise, now we use spiceworks though, it has a dedicated virtual machine and trawls the network for devices and records their information. I add in anything manually thats not readily scannable on the network, such as cameras, tablets, whiteboards, I cant see why you cant make it inclusive of other items like televisions and such, its quite easily adaptable. It also does require a fair bit of fine tuning I will say, to turn off about 75% of its "helpful scanning features" to make it run better.

just turned this to circles myself, google will never learn it seems, its better to offer a feature like this and switch it off than make it the default and have people annoyed their email becomes accessible to everyone.

People report it working though on there, so it makes for confusing reading on that, I get silverlight is an issue there, It does do the majority of stuff I want though looking at it, the chrome plugin which I use to watch american shows on fox/cbs and the american networks all works like a charm

Thanks guys ill give it a try I think, I liked the light feel of using it when I had the trial samsung one, I had a feeling silverlight would be a minor issue, similar to me having with Linux on my desktop machine, can get around that though on the wifes ipad if need be. Dont think it would be a massive problem, at home we are 120mb VM and all family have decent internet thankfully, just wait on the toshiba chromebooks to make an appearance I think, as all Samsungs on offer now seem to be that exonyx processor which I find offputting.

Hello Fellow Geeks, I am after opinions on these devices for a possible personal device for me, my aged laptop has given up the ghost with a disk dying, my wifes laptop was an awful advent 9415 which shes blown the speakers on and mangled the power connector on the back of, so I am looking at possible replacements, I trialled a Samsung celeron based one of these for work in the summer term for a fortnight and was very impressed by the device, especially when I looked at the spec first off and thought it would be crap without actually diving in to try it. In terms of my day to day, I generally only use chrome to browse the web and I can live with not being able to play WoW on a laptop if its something fast, light with good battery life. I use google+, gmail, google drive and the usual on-demands from sky, bbc, itv, ch4/5 and netflix with a couple of other websites. I would like opinions off someone who owns them or uses them in their school, on a more regular basis than I do. I am looking at possibly the Toshiba/Samsung Models (I won't touch Acer or HP because of my own "quality" issues with acer and I have yet to see a HP laptop not want to spontaneously combust or burn up in some way) I would prefer an intel/AMD based processor rather than ARM with the exonyx.
