This is controllable via GPO on the computer. It rests in the Computer Configuration Policies System/Power Management/ - you might have to dig around in there a bit, it is in there though. duplicate machine names caused this problem for me on my work network, once that was sorted, taking them off and readding them to the domain sorted it.

Hi, I got this installed over our site using a GPO, you have to extract the core and extended msi files from the standalone installer. Standalone file is here - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=0a391abd-25c1-4fc0-919f-b21f31ab88b7 I extracted the .net core x86 and .net extended x86 .msis from inside it after opening it up with 7-zip and just created a normal GPO for the installation of both those parts then. I had the same problem, I had 27 machines in one room waiting to activate when I set it up initially for our school, the KMS was setup and working as far as I could tell, everything was fine, same with the office stuff, that was all setup, just wouldn't activate anything, only thing I realised then on the 2008 R2 Server you have to manually allow the Key Management Services service on the server firewall, it was denied(unticked) by default on our 2008 R2 server here, so when I edited the settings and ticked the box I was able to pretty much instantly activate all the machines at once. VAMT 2.0 is worth having on there too if you want to manually activate a lot of machines at once.

Thanks Gareth, I made this policy earlier today, with the intention of removing the protected view facility in office for us on the Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Publisher, only thing I would add, is make sure that you have decent AV in place if your using it, because it will open nearly everything with the protected view disabled. It also disables the first run screen from 2010 and the participation in the customer improvement program. Richard

Hello, I sorted our schools KMS out yesterday for windows 7 and office2010, it is a bit confusing in places and the documentation isnt brilliantly explanative for the process. Its worth you having a look at this technet post, the bit on the KMS server that you are referring to here I think is the area that can cause confusion according to Microsoft. How to troubleshoot the Key Management Service (KMS) You can use VAMT 2 to do the KMS authorisation once you have the workstations selected. Its also worth adding here though not related directly to what your going through, that you need to also enable the KMS on the servers firewall and check that setting, I didn't and spent a while scratching my head, wondering why everything was in place but none of the clients were able to authenticate, before the eureka moment. ok, thanks, ive removed the front header usb and firewire ports from the machines in question anyway, the back ports built in to the motherboard all look intact as far as I can tell. I would disable them if I could boot to them, but I cant at the moment. No capacitators appear to be leaking or bulging on the motherboard I have on the desk here either, the PSUs I have here all test fine also, just same result on the machine, a low whining noise and no booting or anything when plugged in

To ressurect this thread (not sure if its allowed, but I do need some extra advice on this matter) - I am now seeing a new issue with these intel boards - their the E210882 / DG965MS boards, basically now on some machines, they refuse to start up at all, on plugging the PSU into the machines I can hear an audible but quite low "whining" noise coming from the motherboard, nothing at all boots up with them. I have tried everything as described previously, even unplugging any thing apart from the bare essentials here and rehousing everything on the machines, but they still refuse to start up. has anyone got any further suggestions on the matter ? or is it just likely that the motherboards here have gone to a better place ?

Hello all, I am wondering if theres anyone within edugeek able to provide help here, We have recently upgraded our successmaker enterprise software from 1.3 building ourselves a new 1.7.2 sp1 installation and have had issues with data importing from one to another, ill detail below what I have done so far. Within successmaker I have used their export utility on the 1.3 version and saved all user information with that, into an Allusers.zip file. If I then try to import the file into the new installation using the inbuilt import utility within resources it gives me an error - Data version mismatch, the import process cannot continue. If I extract out the zip file to a directory and then use File import utility in resources within successmaker, I am able to import a single file into the system so far - the users.txt so that I have all the logons in place from the old system, though this does not have any of the course data attached, just simply the logon details. If I try to import any of the course histories with this method it fails as well, crashing successmaker out (the Maths concepts and skills history weighs in at over 8 meg again I am not sure if this is an issue because of the filesize). What I would like to know if possible, if anyone else has done this and succeeded in importing data in this manner between two versions like this? Is there something else I can do with the files in order to get them to import into SM ? (I see from the files themselves that they just appear to be a normal csv type text file do I need to manipulate them ? or save them in another format ?) At present we have no RM support contract either and our budget is obviously a big issue there with that option, I have noted the solutions on their website that are greyed out pointing at possibilities of imports working, I want to know if anyone has tried any of them and could possibly verify if they have worked for them thats all and whether they would help our situation at all? Is what I am trying to achieve here actually just not possible is also something I also seek an opinion on ? Thanks, -Richard

Hello again, Yes nothing else is plugged into the ports reserved for the fibres, all 4 rj45s are empty, we now have all the DLink GBICs plugged into the backbone stack we have and they work fine without problems or issues so far. the existing fibres plugging into the stack all have DLink modules at both ends of the fibre and they are working fine at the moment, we are hoping to test one of the fibres with netgears at both ends to see if that is the issue, the netgear modules are 830nm ones and I will endeavour to check one of the DLink modules tomorrow when I get onsite early, ill get the full numbers off them and post them on here. Netgear support is also an option which I have been hoping to get around to checking with as well.

Hello, Yes I did try to replicate the settings both ends and I also tried manual configuration of the fibre port, I read somewhere on the netgear site that sometimes the auto config can be a bit flaky so I gave that a go as a quick fix one morning and that did not fix the problem either.

Hello, I am the new IT technician working with Gareth, at the moment we have the old DLink GBIC module, inserted into a netgear GS724TS which forms part of our stack backbone switch and it works fine, the other end of the fibre is a DLink GBIC module, going into a DLink DES-3526 switch and the connection is working fine on them. If I plugged the fibre lead into the netgear module it fails to work at all while the dlink one is connected within the other department, we assumed that the GBICs were pretty much all intercompatible, so thanks for pointing that out to us. Both switches are up to date firmware wise also. I havent tried sticking a netgear GBIC both ends yet, same for checking the module specs against each other for compatibility(though that is probably the reason that they dont work), obviously because the connections are live, its not something I can just unplug until the end of the day, but thanks for providing us with possible solutions to the problem.

The boards in question are all Intel Desktop Boards, I can get you some model numbers if you want when im back at my desk on monday, its happened on the newer boards and older ones, so im guessing its a possible common manufacturing fault or something that develops over time, the machines in question are all a little over 2 years old I believe, though Gareth may correct me, he knows the exact machine ages, it certainly solves the problem fitting a new NIC onto the machines as far as we are concerned.

To close this one off, as far as we can tell, it was a problem relating to the NIC on the intel desktop boards stopping them from starting up with the LAN plugged into the machines, a couple of low profile cards later and we are having no problems with the machines and the shutdown problem has gone.

Hi, I am the IT technician that works with Gareth, he has referred me to this website directly to save us a bit of time, we had 3 PCs displaying exactly the same problem as Gareth described, two of them are now working but with an added issue which looks to be related to the onboard NIC of the intel boards. To list what ive done so far is fairly extensive as you can see with what follows:- Ive tested the power supplies with a tester, done all the boot testing, removing any devices such as usb mice, I have removed all components (including the memory, which I have also tested with Memtest86) and reseated them all (including cleaning and redoing the thermal compound on the processors as we were asked to by Stone) and I have thoroughly cleaned out the dust inside the cases and two of them so far have started to work again, though it appears that there is now a different issue with the two machines that are starting up. The problem that I am seeing now, is that they refuse to cold boot into windows at all with the LAN cable plugged into the machine, if I power the machine on with the network cable inserted into the machine then it will randomly turn the power off at some stage during startup (again not a specific stage to assist me in fault diagnosis, sometimes its just after the BIOS, sometimes its halfway through the windows load screen stage), whereas if I unplug the LAN from the machine and get it to windows xp, then plug the LAN cable back in once xp has loaded, it works fine, I am typing this post on one of the "broken" machines now at the moment, if I restart the machine once it has gotten to the windows stage also, it is then random whether the windows xp will load on it, without the power problem occurring. I have tested out the patch leads with our cable tester and they passed fine, ive even then swapped the patch cables out and the power cables too as a test and I have gone into the BIOS and disabled things like WakeOnLAN and prevented the machine restarting in the event of any power issue, to see if this would be a remedy for the problem, this has not fixed the issue, it is still evident. Has anyone ever experienced this problem before with the NIC and a stone machine or would care to suggest any further help ?
