Mix match of IWB's in school + Promethean Software
steve replied to Kyle's topic in How do you do....it?
You'll need to install the Hitachi board drivers and the ActivStudio software. Sorry can't be much more specific as we don't have any Hitachi boards. -

What's the oldest bit of kit still in use in your school?
steve replied to maniac's topic in General Chat
The oldest kit we still have in use are 2 HP4000 laser printers. Been running for about 8/9 years. We do have a working Atari ST in the cupboard but we only bring that out on special occasions -
I've done the new setup a few times and its pretty straight forward. Give it a try on a virtual server, they are always handy to test the updates on. The only difference to the instructions above is that FMS could now be running on MS SQL, not MYSQL

Steve Rochford and witch have shown the way: Right click on the merge field that related to the date. Select Toggle field codes You'll be shown something like: { MERGEFIELD "Date" } Change this to { MERGEFIELD "Date" \@ "dd/MM/yyyy" } where "dd/MM/yyyy" is the date format you want Right click on the merge field again and select Toggle field codes to change back. Check the date is in the right format with "View Merged Data" icon on toolbar.

Windows Mobile Owners

Got a iPAQ hw6910, but considering changing to a 614c if I can get the Wi-Fi working -
Just purchased 7 new HP IPAQ 614c PDAs All very nice kit, until you try and get them to sync via Wi-Fi. Entering the Wi-Fi settings is OK, connecting is OK. However once the signal is not available, the PDA decides to delete its Wi-Fi settings  This doesn't happen on my WM5 device. Anyone else seen this? Other are having this problem too - click here

Our repo department has bought infotec for the last 6 years. Not had any major issues until this year. when trying to share one of the smaller units via a server: "Oh, no it doesn't work on server 2003, it's a known issue" And we've had no end of problems getting them accept any prints from a PC

I plan on replacing PCs every 5 years, laptops every 3 But this will depend on how much you spend on them initially. For a £400 PC - 5 years For a £400 Laptop - 3 years If you think you can eek an extra bit out of the laptops how about: Year 1 - 10 PCs (£4K) Year 2 - 10 PCs (£4K) Year 3 - 10 PCs (£4K) Year 4 - 7 Laptops (£2.8K) + Printer? / Projector? / A few bits to stretch kit to 5 years Year 5 - 8 Laptops (£3.2K) + A few bits to stretch kit to 5 years Or perhaps better: Year 1 - 15 PCs (£4K) Year 2 - 15 PCs (£4K) Year 3 - 30 Monitors (£4K) Year 4 - 7 Laptops (£2.8K) + Printer? / Projector? / A few bits to stretch kit to 5 years Year 5 - 8 Laptops (£3.2K) + A few bits to stretch kit to 5 years Speak to the suppliers - companies like Dell tend to keep the same chipset for 15/18 months, so if you buy at the right times you can cut it to 1 or 2 types of PC and 1 type of laptop.

If the school can't afford to replace everything in one go, look into leasing the kit. They can then benefit from having the PCs / laptops replaced together to ensure only having 1 type of each, while spreading the cost over the lifetime of the machines.

Projectors: I hate to say it but RM have some good deals atm: RM Deals Epson EMP-X5e has 4 years hardware and lamp warranty Then it comes down to which type of interactive board you want: Promethean (work with a pen), SMART (work by touch) - both of these include the software needed. The board and projector are connected to your PC/Laptop with the software installed on it. Speaking to your LA is probably the best advice I can give as they will typically only support / train on one or the other. Once you have decided on the board/projector its just a matter of getting it installed. There are lots of companies that can help out here - typically £300-£500 inc. fixings / cables etc. You may also want to consider a sound system. There are some all in one systems by both Promethean and SMART that are considerably more expensive but offer the ability to adjust the height of the board, allowing all size of student to use the board.

I hate to rub salt in, but that's probably even more than you thought - Term Time only = 39 weeks 8hrs x 39 = 312 hrs per year £2500 / 312 = £8 per hour That's equivalent of £15417pa (for 37hrs per week)

Mix match of IWB's in school + Promethean Software
steve replied to Kyle's topic in How do you do....it?
What you need is the Activstudio Community Licence This allows you to run the software on any number of PCs in the school. For each non-promethean board you want to use handwriting recognition, voting and gesture tools within the software you'll also need an activhub at £50 each -
We recently purchased 36 Samsung NV3 Cost less than £90 with a 2Gb SD card. Nice camera, with mp3 play back, voice recorder and text reader. Includes a charger / cable. Metal body construction. When connected to a PC with supplied cable it acts like a USB storage device.

We have about 100 laptops running Lesson Register over a wireless network everyday, that's 400-600 registers a day. Pros: Most Teachers love it - PE staff not so much. Great for staff to see if Jonny is wagging it in there lesson Reports / data from the class. Cons: Its wireless, when it works, its good, when it doesn't, its a real pain. Damage - laptops are fragile, they get dropped, power supplies get broken. SIMS updates are a nightmare - 100 staff want to do a register first thing after an update - inevitably a large number of problems (we now get staff to leave their laptops after school and we do all the updates in the evening) Expense -damage, batteries, shorter life span, cases, all make them more expensive. The teachers now love them after 3 years, if we were to ditch them there would be uproar.
