Hi There, yes I will get them to try this. Is there a width 1 setting? Thanks.

I've got some old but still good desktops I'd like to use. We don't have any licences spare for Windows so I was going to stick Ubuntu on them and keep them off the domain and just lock them down as much as possible. Has anyone done such a thing? Is it worth it? At the moment its just an idea.

If you want to solve it, then yes its worth reseating the CPU and re-applying the thermal compound. I would also replace the fan the pwm controller could be knackered or it could need a bios update for the fan control.

Some of the lecturers like to use the page extender feature but they have noticed that when they use it some "elements" disappear. If you watch from 4:50 you will see the cross from the letter "t" (word "but") disappear, this also happens on equals signs, they become a minus and a plus sign would also become a minus. You can imagine this is quite annoying for the maths lecturers. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7474878/rec.avi At about 5:05 the lecturer circles the word so you can see it better. Also at 5:50 the word "height" The Activinspire version is 1.7.62196 PC's are Windows XP Pro SP3 and Win 7 Pro SP1

Edu YouTube - add to playlist button gone?!
Gaz replied to sparkeh's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
Does that school admin account have unrestricted youtube access? I wasn't aware that you could even use the add to button in youtube edu. I thought you had to copy and paste the link into the play list when you add it in. -
We've got some flash drives by Kingston that don't appear to be opening. When the drive is inserted it opens with an autoplay box and you select the datalocker.exe and then you are prompted for a password. Once the password has been entered the dialog box closes and the drive appears in "Computer" but when clicking on the drive it says "please insert drive" (or words to that effect) This is happening only on Win7 PC's as far as I know as we don't have many XP PC's left now. Does anyone have any ideas why? Could it be some sort of a permissions thing? They are Kingston Datatraveler Locker+

We've still got 2 - 486's and some keyboards that have DIN connectors. I've never powered them up but they were used to drive a wind tunnel and I believe they still work.

Best Open Source Firewall Appliance
Gaz replied to J_Worth's topic in Internet Related/Filtering/Firewall
A lot of commercial firewalls are based on OSS so why not? If you're paranoid and know what you're doing you can get the source files and look through them and see for yourself how robust it is. -

General heads up: zenmate.io/home/ Chrome extension

I would hope that anyone that uses Chrome onsite would block the use of extensions. -
Impero Education Pro question - No suppliers please!
Gaz replied to Koldov's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Something I forgot to mention. It may not play nice with some AV software as it hooks into lots of different files, the program is also encrypted using a program (Themida) that virus writers use to mask their virus' so our AV (ESET) freaked out until we added in the exceptions. Unfortunately Impero won't give ESET the files to whitelist. -
Impero Education Pro question - No suppliers please!
Gaz replied to Koldov's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Its a bit of a swiss army knife. I probably only use a small percentage of what it can actually do. Features I like are, remote viewing, msi deploy (better than using GP if you only need to install something on 1 machine and you want to do it instantly) power management (start up and shut down at certain times) Password reset for trusted SLT. -
Promethean Activinspire v1.8.64351 release notes
Gaz replied to Gaz's topic in Promethean Direct Support
Arh nothing that we would really benefit from then. I won't rush to push this update out. Thank you. -

What I meant was the company that actually developed the software. I'm sure Pearson would have had a company make the software for them.
-
Brilliant. Why is this software so bad? who actually makes the software does anyone know? I'd like to get in contact with them and ask them why they are using vulnerable and outdated versions of flash and adobe.
-
Excellent thank you. Now I feel better equipped to install this, but I've still no idea why something like this can't all be done web based.
-
Thanks. How does the shared folder work? does the administrator software know where the folder is or do I need to create a drive mapping, the instructions tell me (albeit vaguely) how to install the software but not how it works. Thanks for putting up with my silly questions.
-
That does help. Thank you. We use IIS for quite a few things on our server (we only have 1) and I'm not about to stop it just to run this rubbish. So I'll need to setup a separate PC for this. Did you follow their guidelines for setting up the shared folder? Do they really need full permissions?

We've just sent off the application form for the software. From what I can gather from the technical docs, there are 2 pieces of software Enterprise Site Manager and Administrator. Enterprise Site Manager sits on the server and the Administrator software sits on the client PCs, why on earth is it called Administrator if its what the clients will be using? It says it requires adobe acrobat but we use Foxit does anyone know if thats OK to use. I really don't wanna install any shodware. Under ESM Pre-Installation Tasks http://www.edexcel.com/Our-support/Documents/Installation%20Guide.pdf It also says (I assume its refering to where you install ESM) So do I need 2 servers/computers to run this? as later it says. These two statements seem to contradict each other.

Do network cables HAVE to be terminated in a patch panel? Regulations?
Gaz replied to burgemaster's topic in Wired Networks
Hes got 3 options really. Cut all the cables and patch panel them - A lot of work and will the company still honour the work they have already done if you modify it? Use a pass through patch panel - easy work but connection may be flaky (only if moved about alot and if they are patched into a panel then they won't be moving) Get the company back in to do the work - can you trust them to do the work? Just got to work out the time to cost to effort ratio. -

What about getting something like this. Black Box Cat6 Feed-Through Patch Panels -
I should have said its for home use. Your probably right though I may end up just getting the pro version anyway to save any hassle. However I may need 2 which sends the costs up.
